Apple expands patent infringement lawsuit against HTC

Invisible Shield for Apple iPhone 4!“In early March, Apple filed a suit against HTC alleging infringement of 20 patents related to the iPhone’s graphical user interface, underlying architecture and hardware,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD.

“In a complaint filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, Apple accuses HTC of infringing two additional patents and re-asserts its allegations of infringement of two others,” Paczkowski reports.

The two new patents:
• 6,282,646: “System for real-time adaptation to changes in display configuration”
• 7,380,116: “System for real-time adaptation to changes in display configuration”

  1. I can’t wait until HTC loses this law suit. All the iPhone copiers out there will have to come up with their own designs for a change.

I don’t want to kill Android. I think the iPhone does need a decent competitor out there. I think Apple does a good job innovating all on its own, but good competition just helps to ensure they do.

  2. remember, as much as apple would hate to sell Google, they’re giving Android away for free. It’s one of the delicious benefits of being an ad based company (of sorts)…

you can’t sue someone for much damages if they’re… giving stuff away…

but if you follow the money eventually you nail their partners..

And lets keep it real.. no one gives a crap about Motorola, the company’s a bloody joke, HTC is THE maker of premier Google Android phones.

This is just awesome. Unfortunately, its not like rooting for your favourite basketball team… this ‘championship’ for this, won’t be for another few years :(.

  3. Android did not used to be a “copy-the-iPhone” operating system. When Google purchased it, it was a beard of buttons RIM style monster. But Google decided they wanted to rip off the iPhone as closely as they could get away with. Apple of course was not happy, but when they allowed multi-touch, that’s when this lawsuit happened.

Google and Android brought this on themselves, and are very likely to lose big time. Android is likely to be crippled out of this lawsuit if Apple wins even a portion of it.

This lawsuit also has the potential to permanently cripple HTC. As far as I understand Apple had been in talks with all the handset makers before HTC decided to implement multi-touch and HTC had been warned, but chose to ignore those warnings.

We’ll see how this all turns out, but Apple has nothing to lose (other than some PR for geeks who don’t like Apple anyway), and everything to gain. HTC could be ruined by this.

Grab your popcorn, going to be quite a show.

  4. HTC thinks they are going to shut down Apple themselves. Good luck with that BS lawsuit HTC, because you don’t have a leg to stand on. Apple is serious about these leeches riding off their work.

Yes, you can. If I’m selling copies of a painting that I created, and you start reproducing it without my permission and giving copies away, I can sue you for the full retail price for each and every copy that you gave away. That’s what “intellectual property” is all about – I own the rights to my intellectual property, and unless I sell those rights, people only get to use that property in the way that I license it to them.

You can sue anyone for anything. It has nothing to do with giving it away for free. Going after HTC is a strategic move. You go after the weaker opponent.

I think you mean surveillance system pretending to be an ad based company.
    fixed that for ya

While I agree with the need for competition to spur innovation. Stealing a company’s IP is not the way to do it.

  9. HTC made phones many years before Apple, and is also suing Apple. Everybody is suing everybody, let the one without sin cast……

Another Taiwan based company; Elan Microelectronics has also made a patent infringement case against Apple regarding the use of multi touch screen technology. Elan has already won a case against Synaptics regarding similar hardware patent concerns.
