Clues emerge that hint at free version of Apple’s MobileMe

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Plans by Apple to make MobileMe free as a hedge against Google may have been given some clues by Apple itself through quite changes noted by some subscribers,” Electronista reports.

“Existing members have noted their accounts at least temporarily changing over from ‘individual’ to ‘full member’ without any changes of their own,” Electronista reports. “The switches coincide with maintenance Apple had scheduled for the same day.”

Electronista reports, “The labeling implies that, rather than offer a completely free service, Apple may stratify its service into basic and full tiers where free customers still get core services while full members get extras… The company has recently been working on a North Carolina data center that could help scale such plans in the future.”

MacDailyNews Note: On May 07, 2010, MacDailyNews was first to report an unconfirmed tip that said, “Apple is planning to make MobileMe free.” No timeframe was given for MobileMe to go free, other than: “sooner than later… depends on certain facilities going operational.” Full article here.

  1. MobileMe works great for me; in addition to the above features, I also make heavy use of it with my (several ) iWeb Websites. With the Amazon discount I definitely consider it worth the money.

My account now says “Family–Master”, so something must be going on!

  2. I have a MobileMe account and really only use iDisk. Actually, I barely and rarely use iDisk because it’s painfully slow. It feels like AOL on dialup.

Apple really needs to boost the speed from 1995 levels to 2010 levels!!! PRONTO! If not, I probably won’t renew. Even if it were free, I might barely use it.

I do store things like PDFs of my passport and such just in case I’m traveling and lose the originals.
