Apple Board member Al Gore to separate from wife Tipper after 40 years of marriage

invisibleSHIELD case for iPadFormer Vice President and Apple Inc. Board of Directors member Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, are separating after 40 years of marriage, according to multiple reports.

“According to an e-mailed statement obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday, the Gores said it was ‘a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration,'” Erik Schelzig reports for The Associated Press.

“Al Gore lost the 2000 presidential election to Republican George W. Bush. He has since campaigned worldwide to draw attention to climate change, which in 2007 led to a Nobel Peace Prize and an Oscar for the documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth,'” Schelzig reports.

MacDailyNews Note: “An Inconvenient Truth” was based on presentation created by Apple’s Keynote application.

Schelzig continues, “Tipper Gore is known for her advocacy on mental health issues. She became interested partly because her mother suffered from depression. The Gores have four adult children.”

  1. @MDN

“‘An Inconvenient Truth’ was based on presentation created by Apple’s Keynote application.”

Keynote was used to produce the presentation, but Keynote did not “create” it. That dubious honor goes to Gore and whatever other deranged schlubs he had working for him.

  2. It’s hilarious to watch Al Gore-hating “conservatives” act as though it’s some kind of bizarre accident that he’s on Apple’s board of directors.

Climate change ain’t the only thing they’re living in denial of…

  3. This is a disappointing thing for MDN to feel the need to post…yes, Al Gore is famous, yes, he is a controversial figure because of his stance on global warming, and yes, MDN would love to see him off the Board of Directors. But to report a marital breakup as “Mac news” simply because it involves a director of the company is really cheap. I somehow doubt the personal lives of other directors on the board would merit such attention here.

  4. Such restraint! Wow. Where’s the vitriol. Could it be that the ultra conservative faction on this site can actually show a little respect and compassion for someone with whom they disagree? Who’d a thunk it.

  5. @anaknipedro, An Inconvenient Truth wasn’t Science Fiction — that would imply at least a remote basis in science. It was pure fantasy. A wet dream for a megalomaniac.

Agreed. This isn’t Mac news, and it’s very sad to hear about a marriage breaking up after 40 years. Even though the kids are adults, I bet they’re heartbroken.

  7. Islandgirl, OttawaMark and others,

You’re welcome to your opinion. I and others here don’t agree. In addition to being a megalomaniacal charlatan and world-class crybaby, Gore happens to be a director at Apple, and anything that’s a big deal in his life is news to Apple fans.

That’s the way it is. Deal with it.

And look on the bright side. Maybe Gore will resign Apple’s board to focus on <strike>fleecing</strike> — er, saving the planet. Then he won’t be mentioned on MDN any more.

  8. It is important to consider the facts: fossil fuels took millions of years to be created. The human race has been burning them at an increasing rate for hundreds of years (increasing carbon dioxide emissions significantly). This, compared to millions of years is instantly. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas – it makes the planet hotter if you increase it significantly.

And carbon dioxide emissions are increasing as countries like China and India, each of which has over a billion people, not unreasonably, want the luxuries that North America and Europe take for granted (things like cars, for example).

And this is all the while chopping down forests that once occupied major portions of the planet (trees remove carbon dioxide), making matters worse. Carbon dioxide accumulates, so things get hotter and hotter if you continuously emit it in large volumes such as the human race is doing presently.

Serious scientists who try hard to do things right (and, as part of this process, invite others to check and re-check their data, research, analysis) have been concerned about this and have checked into it. They have found that the 10 hottest years of average global temperatures on record (roughly a couple of hundred years) have all occurred in the past 15 years. Something is going on and there is a massive scientific consensus on this. That is, the people whose job it is to check this, all agree, generally.

And all 3 major ice masses on the planet are melting – the Arctic, Greenland and Antarctica, year over year. Again, consistent with an increasing average global temperature. Now, of course, we still have winter and summer, but its the average temperature throughout the year we’re talking about, and the total amount of ice added in the winter minus the ice melted in the summer is a negative, resulting in melting. Heck, Greenland has melted so much that an island, once completely covered in the glacier was found – we’re talking about a lot of melting – multiple cubic MILES of ice.

Will this get worse as it warming continnues? Yes, because ice reflects heat from sunlight, and water absorbs it, creating a vicious circle of melting. And melting permafrost makes it worse, also, adding to the vicious circle.

Now, does the sun vary in emissions and cause climate changes? Yes. Do volcanoes put out huge amounts of ash in some cases and block the sun and lower the average global temperatures? Yes, but not for long. Can we say exactly how much global warming caused by humans is? No, but we have a good range.

Do dishonest politicians lie about this? Yes. Will fixing this cause a lot of disruption and cost? Yes. Will ignoring it cost more? Yes. Will dirty corporations who have a vested interest in keeping things unchanged for now diminish this? Yes. Will it cost some companies a lot to fix this? Yes. If we don’t do anything, will we, eventually, destroy the planet by making it too hot to live on? Possibly but I’m not sure and it would seem to be reckless in the extreme to gamble by doing nothing. If all of the ice melts (that is, we do nothing), will sea levels rise by something like 30 feet? Yes. Would this wipe out Manhattan and big chunks of Florida? Yes.

Is it true that there is nothing stopping integrity challenged, dishonest politicians from flagrantly lying about this, for short term political gain? Yes, fraud laws are clearly insufficient in the U.S., IMHO. And are portions of the media, particularly political commentators flagrantly lying, also, hoping people won’t check the facts? Yes.

What about An Inconvenient Truth – is it fundamentally correct? Yes. Are there some dramatizations and things that were overstated on the periphery? Yes. Did somebody take it to court on this, and thereby uncover it via a neutral 3rd party, a judge in the U.K.? Yes. See

But, remember, the core stands – global warming is largely human caused and a really, really big, bad deal, soonish. And warming is happening now. Can the human race stop it if we move strongly and soon? Yes, but lets not wait around.

Remember people, just because somebody lies and says 2 + 2 = 5, and gets their liar buddies to repeat it doesn’t mean it is true. Part of being an adult means that you check things, think, and when you see a train wreck coming for the human race you try and do something about it sooner rather than later.

  9. yay now I can finally like Al with a clean conscious. Tipper’s involvement in the attack on music(eg Free Speech) in the 80’s always bothered me.

Tipper never attacked music, dipshit. She only campaigned for “explicit” labeling. But I guess you like all the “suck my dick, bitch” hip hop garbage spewing forth these days. Loser.

  10. Splashman:

I believe this blog has a significant amount of people who think and take consideration of the facts before they write. And, do so in a civilized manner. Apparently, you are not one of them.

That is fine – you have the right to fail to adhere to the basic standards of adulthood. It is, however, sad.

If, on the other hand, you are a young child, I urge you to stay in school and brush up on your kindergarten:

  11. Al Gore may be on Apple’s board, but his marital status is completely irrelevant, unless there are those here who want to yet again infest this site with hits from morons with conservative political agendas.

The jokes aren’t funny, the intellects are dim, and I may as well amuse myself by moseying over to PC World or the countless Apple-bashing sites out there. I’d mention names, but I really don’t have the inclination or that amount of time.

The political debate doesn’t belong here- whether or not I were to agree or disagree with any particular issue.

Along with Steve Jobs, I happen to be a fan of Al Gore. But that’s irrelevant. Isn’t there enough going on?

Rather than trash anyone- let’s just say that I completely agree with “unapologetic atheist.”

Shame on you , MDN. I rely on you to talk me down when the tide turns against Apple, to inform and enlighten me, and all of us as we support our mutual interests.

KEEP YOUR CONSERVATIVE AGENDA OUT OF THIS! If I want heartburn, I’ll read Enderle, Dvorak, and become facebook friends with Zune Tang.

And, boyoboy, believe me- does it hurt your credibility.

If MDN can get this so wrong, maybe the other tech “pundits” are worth considering.
