“Okay, one good dig at Apple by Google at its I/O event over the last two days seemed like the right thing to do given their recent bickering over a range of issues,” Kara Swisher writes for AllThingsD.
“Two digs at its rival was probably appropriate,” Swisher writes. “Three, welllll, okay, if you insist.”
Swisher writes, “Unfortunately, the continued verbal jousts at Apple by many Google execs–including CEO Eric Schmidt–onstage at the San Francisco developers conference got tired pretty quickly and soon felt petty and juvenile, and ultimately made Google look needlessly defensive.”
MacDailyNews Take: Needlessly? We beg to differ. Consider two words and Google’s future doesn’t look so bright: “Verizon iPhone.” Without the iPhone being tied to AT&T in the U.S., Android faces the same fate as it does in the rest of the world: Bloodbath. If those two words don’t float your boat, here are two more: “Patent Infringement.” Last quarter, Google generated half the revenue that Apple generated. Apple’s current market value exceeds Google’s by $70 billion. That’s “billion,” with a “b.” Google had better be defensive, at the very least. If they’re not simply consumed by hubris, then their public bluster masks fear.
Swisher continues, “Still, there was Google Engineering VP Vic Gundotra – doing his best imitation of a geek Gary Cooper – noting in this video below that ‘“if Google did not act, we faced a Draconian future in which one man, one company, one device, one carrier would be our only choice. That’s a future we don’t want.'”
MacDailyNews Take: Continuing on with the former Microsoftie Gundotra‘s train of thought: Because then we wouldn’t be able to monopolize mobile advertising, especially as mobile device users seem predisposed to use dedicated apps over random Web search.
Swisher continues, “As they say so eloquently on the ‘Really!?! With Seth and Amy’ segment on Saturday Night Live: ‘Reaaaaaallly!?! Reaaaaaallly!?!'”

MacDailyNews Take: Google. A bunch of amateurs.

Yes, I wish Google would become more defensive,
because as of now, I find them very OFFENSIVE……
Google’s “open” persona may appeal to Linux/Libertarian notions in their audience, even though Google intends to profit in a very greedy way from all this.
Under the flag of do-no-evil bs, Google is simple a sleazy advertising company, milking their ability to connect existing information. Beyond that, they brazenly and unethically copy the work of others to make me-too exploitive junk which is released in perpetual beta.
Apple has made my life better with brilliant, transformative devices and computers, has helped me rediscover music and blend it with my life, and given me the best tools for my photography, and working with information. The “walled garden” critics point to is part of crafting the experience and does not in any way limit access to the world. Their profit policy is based on the idea that making better products for a better experience brings success.
Google is so full of themselves, attacking Apple, it amounts to insisting that I, and a hundred million others, choose between them. Speaking for myself, they cannot possibly win that.
It’s really quite funny how Apple basically spent years just trying and mostly succeeding at breaking new ground, innovating, creating great products that work well with all other Apple products in a wide ecosystem… Mac OS X, Macs, iPods, iOS, iTunes, iTunes Store, Apple Retail, etc., etc..
There seemed to be little care in what the competition was doing, except for poaching their users (“I’m a Mac” ads).
Apple has been working on this strategy for over a decade and it’s all come together in extremely impressive fashion AND with VERY few duds (TV and the Cube, mainly because of price).
NOW there seem to be this legion of Apple loathers crawling out of their dark holes, spewing venom and bile… with generous portions of FUD. So, it’s gone from scoffing (Macs are toys, no market share, etc.) to bashing (evil Apple, walled garden, no Flash, etc.).
The lengths these people go to find (or make up) new ways to bash Apple and all things Apple is laughable.
If only they all would just STFU, leave us alone and go away.
It’s not just Verizon; if the exclusive ATT agreement is over, then T-Mobile can instantly jump in on the iPhone and I believe Sprint could use the CDMA iPhone as well. Sorta takes away the “one carrier” argument, which is stupid anyway, seeing as the iPhone is offered on multiple carriers in other countries.
Perhaps Google should say how bad it is to be tied to a one-trick <strike>phony</strike> pony. But that would be too self-depreciating. Google is looking more and more like Microsoft – make it big with one or two products (Windows and Office), and then keep throwing stuff at the wall hoping another revenue stream will stick. But it never does because the company can’t finish it right before it gets distracted by the “Next Big Ass <strike>Table</strike> Thing.”
It appears Larry is just another Stooge.
The least humorous one at that.
Wait til Steve and Eric meet for coffee again…
Gee- that demo went smooth huh. Saturated network my ass.
In the end, all the talk and hyperbole will fade away, and all that will be left are the actual devices to stand on their own. And keep in mind that all the fandroids are comparing these Android phones to the current iPhone. What will happen when Apple releases the next iPhone? I guess they will continue to try and play catch-up.
Who here didn’t expect this?
Apple has clearly got the world’s attention. Millions in the world have bought iPods, iPhones, and iPads from a company who makes terrific products for the Windows platform. Suddenly they find themselves having to defend their purchase at every turn. Complete strangers are suddenly ridiculing them because their newest gadget has a fruity logo.
Their only defense? But it works.
Sucks to be you, that’s what I say.
@Larry
Yeah dude, keep believing that. Android is for phone geeks that are the equivalent of PC geeks who want to build their own gaming PC. It’s quite obvious that Google and it’s partners do not give the care to the user experience that Apple does. Google’s innovation in this area only extends to where they can make money. No care for their customers , partners or developers has been demonstrated by Google ever since they launched this phone operating system. Rampant disregard for end user experience will really win them lots of core business in the end. But that’s Ok because they only want to sell advertising anyway, that’s who their real customers are…advertisers not end users. Good luck pushing any kind of innovation with that kind of agenda.
@bobchr
That’s it! Geek Pfones.
How long will it take for someone to invent a command line interface for it.
THEN it will be REALLY real!
Pardon my lack of intellect, I haven’t had my first cup of coffee yet this morning, but I am confused. If my understanding is correct Google believes it would be bad for one company to define the ecosystem, but apparently only if that company isn’t Google.
Google wants to be the only source for search and the only source for online advertising. Oh, and they will decide which of your personal information will be given to others without your knowledge or approval.
Right, that doesn’t sound Draconian at all.
Not just new phones…just wait till the iPhone OS 4.0 is released, improving performance of even existing iPhones while many Android owners don’t/can’t upgrade without shelling out $$$ for a new phone…
I just have to say, Kara Swisher absolutely made my day by including those Doctor Who references. 😀
Mr. Reeee- Thanks for the laugh.
Vic “levels with us” about Google’s utter fear and concern about a Draconian future over a phone that had just been released the same month as he joined the company (both happened June 2007).
Google acted to prevent a draconian future in 2005 when they bought Hemorrh(Andr)oid… iPhone was revealed in January 2007 and the App Store in July 2008.
Gundotra needs to cease + desist with his lying, and cheating people of facts with his invented history – skills he no doubt picked up during his days at Microsoft…
Be happy.
Don’t worry
An Apple a day ……

Come on Steve, we need an Apple search bar instead of the Google.
The Google; the Kraken. Sounds a lot alike.
Google & others just ‘don’t get it’. Learn to give customers ‘what they want before they want it’ then you may understand why Apple Inc. continues to succeed and prosper.
Boycott everything Google.
From this day forward, I refuse to type, write or speak any word that contains a double o.
So let it be written – so let it be done.
I’m just glad their name isn’t Geegle, ’cause I sure couldn’t go without beer. Then again, it won’t be the same without n**kie.
Ah macheads love to criticize but can never be critical of thier god Steve Jobs. Look people whether or not iPhone sells more than android is not the point. I don’t like Steve jobs telling me what apps I can put on my phone. It’s my phone dammitt!!! Go ahead macheads and defend that one or are you too busy being on your knees sucking the Big machead? And don’t start with stupid comments like (” it apple’s store”) as don’t you sucker say the iPhone and or ipad is like a mini computer? If it was a mini-computer then I could any app I want on it. I like the iPhone but don’t like the overreaching morality of almighty Steve.
It’s simple, if Apple gets into Ads, how long before they get into Search? What is Google without Search?
G**gle execs display their inability to be original, with a feeble attempt to bitch slap Apple with Apple’s very own trope of George Orwell’s “Big Brother” from “1984”
I beginning to think that G**gle are becoming proficient in the art of Doublethink
– http://www.trincoll.edu/zines/tj/tj10.01.98/articles/cover.html –
and that is a worrying thought.
During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act, maybe G**gle should remember this other Orwellian deliberation –
“They had their cynical code worked out. The public are swine; advertising is the rattling of a stick inside a swill-bucket.”
– Keep the Aspidistra Flying (1936)
