Adobe begins offering free ‘HTML5 Pack’ update for Dreamweaver

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Adobe, the software company, showcased a new HTML5 addition to its Creative Suite software on Wednesday at Google’s I/O Developer conference,” Nick Bilton reports for The New York Times.

“The new addition, which is already available, comes in the form of a free upgrade to Dreamweaver, Adobe’s Web authoring software. It will offer Web designers and developers the ability to create content that can then be sent to a Web browser using the HTML5 Web language,” Bilton reports. “This announcement comes less than a week after Adobe began a bold ad campaign against Apple over its fight to get Flash onto the iPhone and iPad.”

MacDailyNews Take: Not “bold,” Nick, “stupid.” Full-page ads attempting to portray proprietary, plug-in-dependent Flash as “open” is ridiculous and should greatly concern Adobe’s shareholders.

Bilton continues, “Adding this kind of support to Dreamweaver will help designers create relatively rich animations, possibly for banner ads or graphic interfaces, without the need of Flash or other plug-in based Web tools. When asked if we can expect more announcements from Adobe involving HTML5, Ms. Hickman said, ‘It’s definitely part of a bigger strategy where we will be much more proactive in supporting HTML5 moving forward.'”

  1. May I ask a newbie question of all you Web-Gurus?

Is it possible, to add certain HTML5 features to an existing site, or does the entire code have to be changed?

My work site cotains example videos, which until now I had only in form of Flash Movies/pPlayer. I want to make these films also viewable for iPhone/Pad visitors.

For now, I added the films as .m4v files, which isn’t as elegant as that Flash player.

It would be super, to have the site recognize what browser the visitor is using and then parse the proper format, which HTML5 allows, if I’m not mistaken.

So, can that be added to my existing site?

  2. Wow. I am totally surprised that an author on MacDailyNews.com doesn’t see the irony in his condemnation of Adobe’s “proprietary” tendencies.

As another reader suggests… by not even offering customers the CHOICE to utilize Flash, they have shown their true colors as the newest selfish, power-hungry, irresponsible corporate giant on the blog… instead of the Mr-Nice-Guy corporate giant they used to be.
