“Just in time for the long-awaited iPad to go on sale, Apple has acquired the trademark on its name,” Stephen Lawson reports for IDG News Service.
“A document from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, dated March 17, shows the trademark on ‘IPAD’ has been transferred to Apple from Fujitsu Frontech North America,” Lawson reports. “The development was first uncovered by the blog Patentauthority.com.”
Lawson reports, “The iPad will go on sale April 3.”

Fujitsu made more money selling the name than they ever made selling a product with that name I bet!
Having a healthy bank account helps. Take that wall street analysts!
Now MAC is stuck with the lame I-Pad moniker. Suckers.
They had a chance to name it something cool like ‘MAC Tablet Live Edition with Bing but Not Windows Because It’s Really Just a Silly Overpriced Proprietary Toy for Cultists’. MAC, Feel free to use it if you want.
Your potential. Our passion.™
Nice to have that out of the way before sales begin, rather than after someone sues. Fujitsu was up, as of Friday, but my brief search did NOT tell me what I wanted to know – could Apple have bought the whole company for cash.
Why would they? To make the question of the name go away. Why not? They are in several markets Apple has not (yet) invested in. But, maybe, should. Like … cameras. FujiFilm has been a player since before there was “digital”, and still is. Apple’s iPhone is at the low end of that spectrum.
Since Google can’t be bothered with all that trademark stuff (or finalizing much anything), Motorola had to acquire a license for “Droid” from George Lucas, who has commercial rights to the name for merchandising StarWars junk.
@ Zune Tang
Acid wit at it’s finest lad. Oh how we’ve all missed you even if most of the others don’t care to mention the fact.
That’s what this site needs, more humourists like you rather than the political zealots.
ZuneTang, I’m so happy you’re back!
I doubt Apple paid a cent for the name. Just like STMicroelectronics, whose CEO stated that they would like to be supplier of chips to Apple, when asked about a potential trademark infringement of Apple’s. I’m sure Fujitsu has something they’d like to sell to Apple, and rather not fight over a product name which would spoil that relationship.
Second that!. Zunetang, like a pebble in my shoe I truly have missed that nagging pain on my heel. It hurts so good. Keep it up, you were certainly missed.
Go back to sleep in the welfare office Zunetang.
