Preview: Instapaper app for Apple iPad

Apple Online Store“First: Instapaper is definitely coming to iPad,” Marco Arment reports for The Instapaper Blog.

“Second: Instapaper is coming to iPad very soon. Possibly even on day one — yes, I’m going for it — but that’s optimistic,” Arment reports. “Third: Instapaper Pro will be a universal iPhone/iPad application. That means that you only have to buy Instapaper Pro once to have it on both devices, and the iPad edition will be available to all Pro purchasers at no additional charge when it’s released.”

  1. I know it’s off topic, but I need someone to clarify something re: iPad.

My employer’s IT recently explained to employees that iPad will not be usable in medical settings in which data is used with which patients can be identifiable, because iPad doesn’t provide enough security to hold an use that kind of sensitive info. I think it’s BS, butnif not, what would be missing from iPad’s security model that would be present in laptops, regarding HIPPA-based owotk settings?

    Thanks!

  2. I can imagine the first thing they would want to do is try to lock you into exchange and out of everything else. They see it as insecure because they don’t control it.
In this case they certainly do need to make sure everything is airtight.
They just need time. They will eventually figure out what works and come around to deploying the iPad.

  3. @Maconymous,

I’m not aware of any specific requirements within HIPAA that would preclude the iPad from being used in a clinical setting, including to access information systems with PHI (protected health information).

Now, that doesn’t mean that a particular organization or institution couldn’t have its own security standards that include requirements that would preclude the iPad from being used in their environment. Examples of those requirements the iPad couldn’t meet would be things like endpoint encryption, biometric access, or remote-wipe capability.

  4. Haha! Not a single comment that’s actually on-topic yet!

While I have no intention of ever buying an iPad, Instapaper is simply THE single indispensable third-party app on my iPod. I recommend it to everyone I know with a touch/iPhone.

It’s so great that Instapaper on the iPad is one of the precious few ideas that has – for a fleeting moment – made me think owning one might be useful! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Mac’s don’t need anti-virus software because of their extremely secure OS. Windows machines almost always require anti-virus software because of the extreme lack of security in the Windows OS. Pretty sure you’d know this if you’d ever used a Mac before. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  6. Let’s all be nice to Zune Tang. Maybe he’s been quarantined lately due to catching a virus. I for one have missed his acidic tones. At least he gives us something to fire back at with his ms bs. Welcome back Zune Tang.

  7. @NeoVoyager
Since you have an iPod touch and seem to like it, I’d be willing to bet that you will eventually own an iPad, as well. Perhaps not the first generation, but you will eventually see a feature or group of features that draws you in.

With Mac products, your best intentions sometimes get waylaid by the lure of the shiny gadget. As Bugs Bunny would say, “first you invent gunpowder, then the gun will follow.”

  8. Most. Hijacked. Thread. Ever.

I had never heard of instapaper (saves web pages for offline reading), but it’s a good idea. However, with wifi and 3g I am very rarely offline, nor would know what I needed to cache in advance. But I can see how this might be useful for some.
