“In the run-up to the April 3 launch of Apple’s iPad tablet computer, all appears calm. But behind the veil that obscures all Apple product debuts, the company is making last-minute changes to its book-selling categories and its process for certifying iPhone applications to work on the new, larger device, says mobile media research firm Busted Loop,” Elizabeth Woyke reports for Forbes.
“By leveraging data available to Apple enterprise partners, AppSlice can see what kinds of electronic books Apple plans to offer on the iPad, as well as other sensitive information, says Busted Loop cofounder Josh Kastelein,” Woyke reports. “Broadpoint AmTech analyst Brian Marshall estimates that Apple will generate enough revenue from content sales equal to approximately 10% of its iPad hardware sales by the end of the year and about 30% in 2011.”
“AppSlice’s findings point to a highly organized approach to bookselling,” Woyke reports. “Apple has designated about 20 ‘top-level’ categories for books… Below those categories lie more than 150 sub-categories… Some sub-categories, such as ‘Fantasy’ and ‘Science Fiction & Literature,’ even have sub-sub-categories (‘Historical’ and ‘Paranormal,’ for example.) There are also two sections for ‘Erotica’ books; one under ‘Fiction & Literature’ and one under ‘Romance.'”
Wolke reports, “Of course, the iPad is more than just an e-reader. Apple has heavily publicized the fact that iPad users will have access to the more than 140,000 applications that developers have created for the iPhone and iPod touch. It still has a ways to go. AppSlice data indicates that only 16,700 iPhone apps have been certified as iPad-compatible so far… Applications appear to be receiving iPad approval when they’re updated for the regular App Store, perhaps because developers are being given the option to test iPad compatibility during the app upgrade process. It’s not clear whether all iPhone apps will be vetted this way or whether Apple will “bump up” remaining apps before the iPad launch.”

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “JES42” for the heads up.]
This is NOT a launch; it’s a pre-order!!!!
So does this mean that from now on no more book apps in the app store, unless the app does more than just have a static book…. Please!
Tomorrow is still March lol Dont get ahead of yourselves

The article is correct; the MDN headline is wrong.
I guess our editors have an anxiety problem.
There’s a pill for that.™
Multitasking and more features likely in new iPhone 4.0 O/S update!

Our Editors???? LOL!!!!!!!
does anyone know if we’ll be able to order tonight at 12 am est, 3am est or later in the morning?
Well, the Eastern-most time zone in the US is NOT the Eastern Time (i.e. East coast, such as NYC). US Virgin Islands are the Eastern-most soil in the US (the Eastern tip of St. Croix), and the islands are in the Atlantic Standard Time. So, until this Sunday at 2:00AM, they will be one hour ahead of NYC, four hours ahead of Cupertino.
So, does it mean that the iPad can be pre-ordered on Friday, 12 March at 00:01 Atlantic Time, for those in USVI (which would be tonight, 20:00, or 8PM in California), or will it roll with the time zones/clock on users’ computers, or with the time zone of users’ IP addresses (to avoid cheating by re-setting the computer clock)?
Would there be fanatics willing to try and cheat in order to secure a pre-order an hour or two early…?!!!
For those a bit confused; this Sunday, at 2:00AM, most of the US switches to Daylight Savings Time. US Virgin Islands don’t, so they’ll be in the same time zone as the East Coast, until autumn.
“…ONLY 16,700 iPhone apps have been certified as iPad-compatible so far…”
Only? With weeks yet to go? How many apps will satisfy the author? Perhaps he should compare that with the Kindle or the Sony e-Reader.
This kind of BS makes my head hurt. Frigtards.
I too would like to know if I should stay up until midnight to order, or just get up early in the morning. Eastern time here.
“does anyone know if we’ll be able to order tonight at 12 am est, 3am est or later in the morning?”
We called Apple Stores in CT and MA last night and they assured us that pre-ordering would start first thing on Friday morning when stores open for business across the various time zones.
I’m in CST and would like to know whether I should stay up or just get up early. No one seems to have an answer to this. Guess its going to be a long night. Maybe we’ll get lucky and it will be midnight GMT and we can pre-order and go to bed on time!
In past pre-order situations, I seem to recall that 9 or 10 am PST was when online ordering began. But those weren’t true “pre-orders.”
In the past Apple has taken it’s site down at midnight Pacific Time and brought it back up with the new products. I would expect this to go the same way.
I’m in Canada and i’d like to know if I can pre order or do I have to wait till end of April? How about some clarification Apple, I id sign up for notification but I have yet to receive an email. Did you guys in the US get email notification?
@Predrag…….. I believe Saipan and Guam are U.S. territories, and as such will be the first to pre-order the iPad
