Apple Board member Al Gore mocked at Apple shareholders meeting

Blowout Specials ends 2/28“Al Gore won a Nobel Prize and an Oscar for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. But in the last three months, as global warming has gone from a scientific near-certitude to the subject of satire, Gore — the public face of global warming — has been mum on the topic,” Gene J. Koprowski reports for FOXNews.com.

“Al Gore won a Nobel Prize and an Oscar for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. But in the last three months, as global warming has gone from a scientific near-certitude to the subject of satire, Gore — the public face of global warming — has been silent on the topic,” Koprowski reports. “The former vice president apparently finds it inconvenient even to answer calls to testify before the U.S. Senate. You can call him Al… but he won’t call back.”

“On Tuesday, Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe — a prominent skeptic of global warming theory and the Republican leader of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee — issued a request for Gore to come testify on global warming,” Koprowski reports. “In an interview with FoxNews.com, Inhofe said he wants Gore to appear because ‘it will be interesting to ask him on what science he based his movie,’ a film the senator considers ‘science fiction.'”

“Gore has yet to respond, but that didn’t prevent him from causing a stir at Apple’s shareholder meeting Thursday. According to CNET, Gore was seated in the first row while several stockholders bashed his high-profile views on climate change. One reportedly said Gore ‘has become a laughingstock. The glaciers have not melted,'” Koprowski reports. “Gore did not reply, and he has not commented on his blog or Twitter feed.”

“Since his appearance at the Copenhagen climate summit in December, Gore has been reluctant to talk to the media, making only a handful of public appearances,” Koprowski reports. “On Jan. 16, he spoke at the American Library Association conference at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, and he signed copies of his newest book, Our Choice: How We Can Solve the Climate Crisis. On Feb. 22, at the IBM Pulse Conference in Las Vegas, Gore commented on how the environment was a fantastic business opportunity.”

“The media, meanwhile, have started to ask why the world’s most famous advocate of all things green remains mute on the growing chorus of opposition,” Koprowski reports. “‘The godfather of climate hysteria is in hiding as another of his wild claims unravels — this one about global warming causing seas to swallow us up,’ the editors of Investors Business Daily wrote on Tuesday. ‘We’ve not seen or heard much of the former vice president, Oscar winner and Nobel Prize recipient recently as the case for disastrous man-made climate change collapses.'”

Erica Ogg reports for CNET, ” Apple’s attitude on environmental and sustainability issues was one of the main concerns of the stockholders present Thursday, followed closely by the company’s immense pile of cash. But early harsh comments about former Vice President Al Gore’s record set the tone.”

“Gore was seated in the first row, along with his six fellow board members, in Apple’s Town Hall auditorium as several stockholders took turns either bashing or praising his high-profile views on climate change,” Ogg reports. “At the first opportunity for audience participation just several minutes into the proceeding, a longtime and well-known Apple shareholder–some would say gadfly–who introduced himself as Shelton Ehrlich, stood at the microphone and urged against Gore’s re-election to the board. Gore ‘has become a laughingstock. The glaciers have not melted,’ Ehrlich said, referring to Gore’s views on global warming. ‘If his advice he gives to Apple is as faulty as his views on the environment then he doesn’t need to be re-elected.'”

“Another shareholder immediately got up to defend Gore and endorse his presence as an Apple director. And that wasn’t the end of it. Two different proposals from shareholders were presented in regard to Apple’s environmental impact,” Ogg reports. “Both proposals were ultimately rejected by shareholders.”

“Despite his apparently polarizing nature, Gore was re-elected with the rest of the slate in preliminary results. Proposals regarding changes to an employee stock plan, directors’ stock options, an advisory vote on executive compensation, and selection of Ernst & Young as Apple’s public accounting firm were all passed to complete the official business portion of the event,” Ogg reports. “One shareholder asked if Apple might consider investing in electric-car maker Tesla. To that, Jobs replied he was planning on throwing ‘a toga party’ with the money instead.”

MacDailyNews Take: The results of a poll regarding Al Gore that we ran January 12-17, 2010 are below. We’ve put it up again fresh (top left column of the “big” (non-mobile) site) to see if there’s any appreciable difference now, six weeks later.

  1. Urgh! Global warming or climate change means that weather patterns will become more erratic and extremes more common as average global temperatures continue to increase. It does not mean that periods of cold will diminish.
It is in everyone’s interest to clean up the way humans live on this planet. As they say – don’t shit in your own nest!

Would it have been OK if Al Gore was cheered at the meeting and MDN reported it?

Similarly, if someone as controversial from the right were on the board, would it be accepted that he should leave, making it a business decision, and warranting the MDN blog discussion?

Bottom line to me, I used to think Gore did bring a lot to the board, but because of his choices, he mainly brings baggage.

Anyone that states a position and then declares that the argument is settled on any science is delusional.

  3. Al Gore won a Nobel Prize and an Oscar.
    He deserved it.
    Jobs likes him.
He stopped growing tobacco on his farm
    He is honest and decent.
Only a moron would not appreciate Gore.

  4. Guys, please give the rest of the civilized world a note before you start burning witches again.

At the rate you’re going, the religious right wing inquisition will supersede actual science done at the best of your universities and laboratories at any moment now.

Apple has always been a liberal-minded, curious and science-oriented bunch, with Jobs being unequivocal about it being intrinsic to what they do and why they’re doing it.

If you want to go back to the dark ages, please leave Apple alone – we’ll gladly take it off your hands.

    What a shame.

P.S.: The worldwide glaciers keep melting down at the same rather alarming pace as we speak – with only a handful of exceptions which don’t contradict the trend. But by all means, don’t let inconvenient facts get in the way of convenient delusion.

  5. George,

It’s not about whether the earth’s average global temperatures are warming, it’s about the cause (see: Sun activity) and whether or not we should flush billions of dollars down the drain and into the pockets of people like Gore while changing nothing.

The whole anthropological global warming movement is designed to separate cash from the gullible. That’s why the data was faked, lost, and/or massaged beyond recognition.

  6. Most of the posts here about Gore and especially about climate change remind me of a little plaque that my grandfather had on his wall:
“Vy iz der zo miny more orziz azzes dan der iz orziz?”

The old guy was pretty smart after all.

  7. How long have the glaciers been melting?
    And the snow-lines/levels been receding?
Here’s a hint: 1000’s of years. The geologic records show this.
Now, call me crazy, but people have been impacting the atmosphere how long?
When did the industrial revolution begin?
The same guys that say “this cold winter means shit” are the same ones screaming “this has been the hottest summer ever!”

  8. @ georgie porgie and phredepuss
-the so-called ‘warming’ data was based on false readings! the tree ring data that d bag gore used was selectively biased! al gore is financially vested in promoting global warming, and has even said its ‘good business’!! the earth is cooling despite continued increases in CO2!! are you two retarded? delusional? in denial? all of the above? i would be fine with you living in your own crazy world but its dip shits like you that are making bs like cap and trade a possibility, and furthermore, you’re HURTING the environment by taking attention and resources away from REAL environmental problems such as habitat loss, invasive species……please save the planet for us by stopping to exhale your toxic CO2!

  9. There is BIG MONEY is global warm–, uh, pardon me, climate change. That’s what’s pushing it. That’s the basis of Al Gores hedge fund empire.

NASA still thinks the Space Shuttle is “cutting edge”. They’ve trotted out the same horse sine the 70’s.

Wall Street WANTS IT TO BE TRUE becaue they will “market” this boondoggle. The government NEEDS IT TO ASSUME MORE POWER.

Green projects means BEN FRANKLIN green, but the big money will go the the well-positioned Moneychangers. Christ knew what he was doing when he beat them with a whip…..

There was a “little” 300-year ice age in the late middle ages, before that, it was warmer than today. Egypt used to be the breadbasket of the Roman Empire; Cleopatra and Mark Anthony tried to restrict grain from Rome which led to their pursuit and defeat by Julius Caesar. Maybe these Ph.D. “climatologists” should read a history book once in a while…or at least watch better TV; like Ben Stein’s latest documentary (sorry, forgot title, but you never heard of it, did you? Didn’t think so…).

  10. I’m with ‘Me in LA’… I’m sitting here in my office and it’s gotta be around 65 degrees here… I actually have to wear a jacket because I feel a cool breeze coming out of the vents over my head… How can there be global warming when I’m feeling cold air on me!!! You libtards are clueless…

  11. So your Global warming skeptics… if you’re right, we do nothing and it’s all a hoax, great. BUT… WHAT IF YOU’RE WRONG? WHAT DO WE DO THEN? WHAT is the negative to actually take care of this planet? OUR ONE HOME NO LESS! Tired of the skeptics especially that weird things are happening everywhere in the world.

  12. The weather changes. It always has. There was Global Warming before fossil fuels were discovered. See the Medieval Warm Period which is well documented, except among scientist who have a goal to “hide the increase” like the Global Warming advocates that Gore relies on. CO2 does nothing to effect the climate. CO2 is about 1-2 % of the total greenhouse gas total. Most is water vapor. CO2 is vital to life. Plants need CO2 to survive. The scientists who signed on to this are seeking government payments – and subscribing to Global Warming is the only way to get grant money. Greed and dishonesty are at least as common among “scientists” as is the case with politicians and union heads. And that is saying a lot.

  13. @Me in LA

Greenland’s ice sheet has been there for between 400,000 to 800,000 years. According to the GRACE satellite, which measures shifts in the Earth’s gravity field and records data of Greenland’s ice mass shows that Greenland’s Ice Loss is accelerating at the rate of 30 Gigatonnes/Year Squared. In other words, Greenland’s mass loss doubled in only 9 years.

In other words for all the deniers out there, the human impact on Earth’s climate WILL cause catastrophic global sea level rises due to the melting Ice Mass before the end of this century. Thanks to our lack of effort to reduce out impact, we WILL have sea level rises of 7 metres or more.

Or to put it in Fox-speak: the human race is fucking screwed. Global Climate Change is caused by man and because of stupid idiots like you, we’re not doing enough to stop it. The tipping point is about to be reached.

  14. Ok, let’s set something straight.

All the people pointing to this being the warmest decade on record aren’t mentioning that that is based off satalite geothermic recording that has only been going on since the late 70’s, (the decade where we were headed into an ice age because of greenhouse gasses). If you believe in the thirty to fourty year weather wave cycle, of course the 00’s are the warmest. I would like to see a real scientific study on global warning, not one that has a political intention with a predetermined answer.

  15. Holy s***t; all you people are bloody pathetic…looks like MDN finally has the reactionary ass****les who agree with them truly ruling the comment roost…

Check please…I’m wanted back on planet Earth

  16. “All hail the Fox News Spin Machine.”

I believe FoxNews was started around 1997 or so.
This argument has been going on way longer than that….ever since we had to worry about global cooling in the mid 70s.

Maybe you are just too young to realize that the people who watch Fox now were able to think outside the spin before then. We were the ones that didn’t buy into what ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS told us.

The left seems to be all about diversity, until it comes to ideas.

  17. I don’t really know whether global warming is happening or not. I may be a physicist, but it isn’t my area of speciality. And the available data seems statistically complex and open to multiple interpretations. But I will say that any theory which seems able to explain all possible phenomena without fear of failure is not true science. Karl Popper may not (as some claim) have found the golden key to defining science, but he was probably edging towards something very useful with his Falsifiability Criterion. So those in the pro-warming gang may need to adjust their ‘it’s hot, which proves global warming, it’s cold, which proves global warming, it’s wet . . . it’s dry . . . there are more hurricanes. . . there are fewer hurricanes etc. etc. …all of which which prove global warming’ schtick. It’s undermining their case with anyone even half aware of the demands science makes on ideas before they can qualify as reasonably secure theories. Obviously the rabid ‘antis’ aren’t much better, but there you go.
