“The download limit for iPhone applications installed via the phone’s 3G connection has been increased to 20MB, according to numerous user reports,” Paul Daniel Ash reports for modmyi.com.
“Up to this point, any time a user tried to download over 10MB, they received a message directing them to connect to a Wi-Fi network or use iTunes on their computer,” Ash reports. “The increased cap appears to be for apps as well as media downloaded from the iTunes Store.”
Ash reports, “Coming just ahead of the launch of the iPad, the relaxed limit will be of benefit to developers who are creating large-format apps.”

Will this new limit include a feather?
Because I’d really like a feather in my (20MB download) cap…
Still too small! Really really way too small. Even 100MB would be too small in my opinion.
The only benefit I can see from this limit is forcing developers to try to squeeze the size of their apps down for efficiency.
Hilarious video about google –
@ twilightmoon
While being able to download larger apps is nice, I still like restrictions due to the bandwidth issues. I live in SF so things like this and Slingbox just scare me. What is so important that you need to download <100MB files on your mobile that can’t wait?
@twilightmoon
You can actually tolerate 3G speeds for downloading something like 100MB? I can’t imagine waiting for 20MB, let alone 100MB.
Too much of the “Me want it now!” generation.
Just once I’d like to see some of these users get dropped into 1975.
No Internet, cable, VCR, fax, etc…
You see something you like in a catalog, call the 800 number and order it. Then wait.
@Think – you forgot to add the part about clipping out the order form and dropping the envelope in the mailbox with your check.
what 800 number???
I know ATT network strains in some areas with this limit in place.
That won’t change substantially with this limit removed.
Consider that some map, educational, and game software are very large files. Sure you can “wait til you get home” to download via your computer, but that shackles the iPhone and iPod touch to computers when Apple should be working to make the platform stand on it’s own.
Also consider many places and countries WIFI is far less common than 3G data.
@Angelus520
It still boggles my mind that people actually still use checks…
The one downside to this is that I suspect this will strain the 3G network even more, which is already strained with all the voice and data usage being placed on it.
Hey, I’m just glad I can now download most video podcasts. For example, the evening news so that I can watch it on the bus ride home from work. (for those occasions I forget to do it over wifi)
this isn’t just for the iphone its to make way for a new wave of ipad apps . http://www.freeipad-apps.com
but thats not even the most exciting thing, this means that the ipad is closer that we think http://www.ipadmods.net
