“Just when it looked like Apple was putting its 27-inch iMac troubles behind it with a balance in supply and demand, the company has abruptly pushed new direct orders of its big screen desktop machines out by three weeks,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.
“While the 21.5-inch models of the new iMac currently ship within 24 hours, as of Thursday new 27-inch iMacs have a three-week estimated shipping time,” Marsal reports. “Only days ago, the Mac maker had improved it supply of the larger models to shipping times of less than a week.”
“Released last October, the newly redesigned iMacs include an edge-to-edge glass design in a seamless all-aluminum enclosure,” Marsal reports. “The new iMacs were an immediate hit with consumers, who made them the best-selling desktop machines in the U.S that same quarter.”
“However, soon after the launch, reports of issues with the 27-inch iMac began to crop up. Apple moved quickly to address the issue, releasing a software patch meant to remedy the problems plaguing owners,” Marsal reports. “But for many users, the update wasn’t successful in fixing the problem, as posts on the Apple discussion forums have continued to grow. The same issues have not been reported with the 21.5-inch models.”

No problem with my 27″ iMac. None!
Should I nevertheless install the software patch???
What is the big deal with the ship times? I placed an order on the 11th for an i7 fully loaded. (16 GB of RAM, 2TB hard drive, AppleCare)
They were very clear on the web site that it would NOT ship for at least two weeks. They sent an email early this AM saying that it will ship on the 26th and should arrive on the 29th.
I don’t mind the wait. All I ask is that it be perfect.
Trust me; a little extra wait time might be a good thing.
The only problem with my 27″ is that it has the wrong processor.
I went to the new Apple Store on the Upper West Side and asked if they had the i7 – which they didn’t: no big surprise there. After some consideration, I settled for the i5 they claimed to have in stock. They brought the machine up, my boss had his company card scanned on the floor and we were on the subway in 10 mins.
Next day when I was flicking through the Profile, I nearly barfed when I saw “3.06 C2D”. I kind of feel stupid for not checking the box when they brought it up, but c’mon: there’s only 2 models of the 27″ available (stock).
Now I’m wondering if it’s worth the hassle of bringing it back Noe that I’ve spent a day installing apps on it.

Yes it is. Simply make a Time Machine backup of the C2D machine to an external HD, erase the internal HD, swap machines, reinstall from your backup. Done.
I’ve actually done my migration from a PowerMac G5 to my iMac 27″ i7 that way and it went quite smoothly, considering the simultaneous change of platforms and of operating system versions.
All in all a fantastic machine, and the quad cores (plus hyperthreading) give me highly welcome performance headroom, with the Nehalem architecture being faster anyway.
@Empty Tank,
Don’t get too enamored with this thing. The fact is, it WILL get better than this – it always does. That’s how technology rolls.
@ping
you’re right, of course. Dreading the thought of repacking and carrying that thing back to the subway though :/
@I’m a DB
Name one version of Windows that didn’t have serious flaws out of the gate. You can’t so SHUT THE F@C% UP.
BING BITES AND SO DO YOU>>>>>

I can empathize with that, but it’s still worth it…!

Just make sure they’ve actually got the proper one in stock.
And I would really wipe the HD, not just delete the files.
You should be able to do that after booting from the system DVD, then invoking Disk Utility from the menu and using it to wipe the disk (once is enough).
My parents are hoping the third time is the charm for them. Their first one had the dreaded flicker within about 5-10 minutes of the first powerup. The second one powered up exactly one time, and could never get it going again. We’re crossing our fingers that #3 will be good, or Steve’s gonna be getting some disgruntled email.
Well reading some of the troubles that some people have had with their 27″ iMacs I suppose I am glad I have waited to buy one yet.
I got the first generation 24″ iMac and just after AppleCare ran out, I have to replace 2 graphics cards, 1 stick of RAM, 1 power supply and a logic board.
These Intel machines really do throw out a lot of heat too I have noticed.
Seems that with the cracked screens it might be a packing problem and the screen is so big, might be some flexing of the glass that is causing the breaking.
A lot of people are really pissed though and Apple is out a lot of money and trouble fixing a problem they should have seen coming.

Mine is flawless, so you won’t find as many posts in discussion forums about it than you might if it had a problem.
