Sophos: Microsoft’s Windows 7ista vulnerable to 80 percent of PC viruses tested

“According to one leading security research lab, Windows 7 is vulnerable to an astonishing 8 out of 10 viruses it was exposed to during testing,” Davey Winder reports for IT PRO.

“Sophos loaded a retail release copy of Windows 7 onto a clean PC, configured it to the system default as far as the User Account Control process was concerned, and failed to install any anti-virus software. OK, so this might be a little unfair you would think, but it does represent the actions of many a person new to the new OS. Microsoft insists it is the most secure version of Windows yet, and ‘ordinary users’ will take the company at its word,” Winder reports.

Then Sophos “‘grabbed the next 10 unique samples that arrived in the SophosLabs feed to see how well the newer, more secure version of Windows and UAC held up’ says researcher Chet Wisniewski,” Winder reports. “Unsurprisingly, Windows 7 didn’t do too well in fighting off these new threats. Indeed, it only managed to prevent 2 out of those 10 from operating correctly.”

  1. For the life of me, I can’t understand why there hasn’t been a class action lawsuit over these vulnerabilities, and Microsofts’ lack of action to prevent, or even repair these problems.

And aren’t virtually all the spam-bots in the entire world running MS software?

    Who’s minding the store?

  2. I assume you’re all aware that OSX is the easiest OS to hack? Whereas vista and 7 both address the vulnerability OSX has?

And most new pcs come with antivirus installed…. and the only virus i ever had, i got because of a fileshare with a mac.

Apple are fully aware that their own OS and marketing strategy enables virus’s to spread to windows machines from unportected macs. They even have a recommendation that if you’re interacting with other windows machines that you have antivirus installed.

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, People with any form of common sense can use windows with no issues. People with no common sense prefer macs. Because they think they can be as dumb as they want on the internet and not worry.

  3. troll troll troll troll alarm…..

    idiot alert idiot alert…

if os x is soo easy to hack, why aren’t more people doing it..

THE ONLY way to get a virus from a mac is to run the executable. It sure as hell isn’t going to execute from the os x machine..so it comes back to stupid people again… But hey, what do you expect from a windows user..

    dumbass
