Apple today released an all new redesigned Apple Remote which works with iPod, iPhone, and your Mac.
Apple Remote with iPod and iPhone: If you connect your iPod to a home stereo, powered speakers, or TV set, the Apple Remote lets you experience your songs, slideshows, and more from across the room. Plug your iPod into the Universal Dock and choose a playlist, slideshow, or video. Then sit back, relax, and enjoy. Ready to move on to the next song? No need to get up. Just press the Next button on the Apple Remote. Getting a call on your iPhone? Press Pause, then pick up where you left off.
The Apple Remote requires the iPod Universal Dock and any iPod with a dock connector or any iPhone.
Apple Remote with Mac: The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos, and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It works with Front Row — a menu-based, full-screen interface — to make accessing the digital content on your Mac as simple as navigating your iPod. how does it differ (functionally) from the old one?
Old one didn’t work with iPods or iPhones. Other than that, it’s just a cosmetic update.
Any bets on a new Apple TV today (or at least before Christmas)?

I’m happy they are moving away from the plasticy white look. Hopefully the next universal dock will get a makeover.
I’m curious why they moved the Play/Pause button down below. It kinda felt natural in the circle, so I thought.

Why bigger? Why move play/pause button from previous center position? And no labels or icons but dots (at leat, that they seem to be) for the 4 positions in the wheel? I appreciate the new aluminum material but don’t like the other decisions about the design

To work with iPods and iPhones, you still need an Apple Universal Dock, and it comes with the old Apple Remote.

@Joe….ken1w is right as I used it for a bunch of old iPods (with the dock of course). So, as I understand it….it is no different in functionality.

I was asking the same question until I saw that little piece of info. So hopefully the answer is yes.
My first reaction was “Why on Earth would I need a remote for a mobile device??” Then I remembered: I often work out on an exercise bike while my iPod is plugged into speakers way the heck out of my reach. In the past, this has affected what I play when I work out — it has to be something I know I’m not going to want to fast-forward. This remote could honestly be a godsend. I just might buy one of these things.

Never mind. I thought this was a Bluetooth remote that would work directly with the iPod/iPhone/Mac. Forget it — I don’t want it if I have to buy the dock to make the thing work.
Geez, with the iPod touch, iPhone, and Mac all having Bluetooth built in, you’d think they’d take advantage of that.

Interesting I use my iPhone as a remote now I can have a remote for my remote;-)
I note that it’s not boasting of Apple TV compatibility.
Rather than new Apple TV, I’m guessing it’s going to go away soon.
This makes me sad, but crap like ‘All HD Movies’ ending at movies beginning with the letter C — which has been stuck like this for MONTHS AND MONTHS — demonstrates that Apple does not care one bit about Apple TV.
Is it a scroll-wheel? Or is that asking for too much?
Does the iPhone require a dock for this to work? Maybe iPhone’s Infrared Proximity Sensor can function as an Infrared Transceiver too… Is that possible?
My old white remote works just fine with the dock with my 2nd gen nano, first gen touch and two iPhone 3G. I don’t see that this offers anything different except a different package.
I, too, was hoping this was a bluetooth remote. That would be cool. I might have to buy one if it was but I have several of the white remotes and they do just as well so I won’t be buying one of these.
