“Documents released by the Federal Communications Commission Friday show a new wireless mouse and keyboard from Apple, furthering reports of an imminent Mighty Mouse update,” AppleInsider reports.
“Earlier Friday, AppleInsider shared word that a newly designed Mighty Mouse is on the way. The new hardware, people familiar with the matter have said, will do away with the mechanical roller ball and use an expanded touch sensitive housing,” AppleInsider reports.
“Sources said the new Mighty Mouse is a project under the direction of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. It will take advantage of the company’s patented multi-touch technology and provide an intuitive new feel for users through a combination of hardware and software,” AppleInsider reports.

interesting… very interesting. How long from the FCC to my desktop?

The sole interest: will this new Mighty act like a real 3 button mouse for pro apps?
I don’t think mouse design is Job’s strength.
The loss of the numeric keypad still baffles me. I use it ALL the time as a designer. Typing in job numbers, searching for jobs on the server, etc.
Don’t get it.

Next week
Housed in an aluminum shell. Well, so much for this thing having reliable wireless connection. Wireless is crap. I’ve gone back to wired mostly.
I would never get a keyboard with out a numeric pad. I use it with out looking at the keys. I really don’t understand why Apple simply does not offer it as an option.
What isn’t Jobs doing nowadays?that new liver is making him hyperactive!
@anthony007
It’s like he is drawing and designing. He simply is approving and disapproving the work of people that do the drawing and designing. This could be very big indeed. If it work right.
Great my kids stepped on my Mighty Mouse the other day, and I was just about to replace it!
And yes can we please have a numeric keypad.
If apple can pull it off I will pay. It’s to the point where I prefer using the trackpad on the field over the mouse/monitor hookup at the office. Multitouch is much faster/more intuitive than mouse clicks now
They success of the laptops is indicative that most can do without an extended keyboard.
I personally have switched and bought an Apple short keyboard and a Bluetooth numeric keypad. Now my mouse is just a flick of the wrist away.
In addition, when I am crunching numbers, I can place the numeric keypad more conveniently. Something I learned watching the guys in the accounting departments do all the time.
@macintosher…
He’s got a lot of Liver to do.
It’s a mouse, this is news worth tracing to the FCC?
P.S.
Now with the short keyboard, I often take it along with me along with the numeric key pad when I am working on site out of my office. Certainly packs better as well.
I’d like to see a wireless keyboard with the large multi-touch, clickable trackpad on the right side. (If I can’t have number pad…).
This would be much better for working with the keyboard on your lap – longer, so more stable, and the mouse built in, instead of trying to put the regular mouse on the couch or a magazine, etc…
Most of the time I work from my office, but sometimes it would be nice to have the input device not at my desk.
All I know is it’s going to take A LOT to pry my fingers away from my Logitech MX Laser wireless mouse. By far the best mouse in existence. Charges in 4 hours, lasts for weeks and weeks. Incredibly accurate, totally wireless, and insanely ergonomic.
I’ll be interested to see what Jobs and company bring to the table though.
…”I would never get a keyboard with out a numeric pad. (…) why Apple simply does not offer it as an option.”
They do. When you order an iMac (or Mac Pro), you have a choice of the compact or the full-size wired keyboard at no additional cost. The only one that isn’t available in full size is wireless.
This mouse will have no laser and no ball. No moving parts at all.
Ohhh, just think – if you wanted to scroll across a document on your laptop or other Apple ‘device’
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> rather than hold a modifyer key and move your mouse around you could just run your index finger over the top of your mouse to scroll..!
Or scroll through video in iMovie or FCP, music in Garageband, etc.
Sounding sexy already
guess this is it with details? ..

any confirmations from other sources?
It always concerns me a bit whenever someone talks about a computer or its peripherals as being sexy.
I have never been sexually aroused by computer components. I wonder what other folks are doing with theirs that I am not?
Thank Jobs… that sounds pretty credible. And it’s exactly what I was hoping for. Can’t wait to see it hit the review sites.
“I personally have switched and bought an Apple short keyboard and a Bluetooth numeric keypad”
which keypad did you buy, and does it work good?
@Perry Fjellman
Agree about the Logitech. My favorite. But I love the Macbook multi-touch pad. I don’t want a new mouse. I want a touchpad that supports multi-touch that I can set next to my ergonomic split keyboard. Does anyone make one? When working in a fixed location, for years I’ve always connected my notebooks to this keyboard – that lets me avoid wrist problems I had previously with flat keyboards. Apple obviously should sell one of these. How can their iMac and Mac mini users enjoy the benefits of multi-touch? Would be a strong competitive advantage over Windows PCs
