Apple to debut cloud-based iTunes, new iPod touch family tomorrow ($149 8GB to $349 64GB models)?

Predictions for Apple’s invitation-only special media event, to be held tomorrow, September 9, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10am PDT/1pmEDT, “are varied, though most everyone agrees that Apple will reveal its long-expected new iPod line with cameras, alleged last-minute technical issues notwithstanding,” Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider. “In a brief preview, Forbes speculated Apple would bring a ‘mundane’ yet ‘important’ fix for iPhone and iPod touch users: a new-and-improved App Store. ‘Now that that App Store is filled with 65,000 applications, the next step will be to make all those applications easier to find,’ the report said.”

“Developer Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper and Tumblr, believes the event will feature a number of relatively minor changes to the iPod lineup,” Oliver reports. “He has predicted that Apple will discontinue the iPod classic and unveil a number of new iPod touch models, with price and capacity ranging from $149/8GB to $349/64GB.”

“TechCrunch’s MG Siegler speculated that iTunes will inevitably be a cloud-based service. Citing the huge size of HD video offerings, the report suggests that Apple’s media service could allow users to stream, rather than download. In this vision, Apple would allow users to purchase and delete locally saved content, and retain the ability to download it again in the future if the user wanted to access it on the go, via an iPod or iPhone,” Oliver reports.

  1. No way in hell they will allow you to store your music online, unless it’s a subscription model. They will need to get paid for storage and bandwidth.

And to kill the iPod classic would be horrible – unless it morphs into a tablet computer. 64G just doesn’t cut it – I would buy a 200G model tomorrow to add to 6 or 7 ipods I already have. For storing music and movies, especially with TivoToGo, 64G just doesn’t cut it.

As for the quote by Peter S: “The biggest advantage of a cloud based iTunes Store will be speed” – what are you smoking ?

  2. I’m guessing that any cloud-based service from Apple, will be more for syncing, than anything else, with the option to stream.

In other words, like Mobile Me is now, plus the new feature of streaming.

Apple isn’t the kind of company that is likely to screw something up that works well already.

  3. The idea of the “cloud” is really a winner for many consumers. Apple has a history of providing consumer-level goods and services which have been extraordinarily easy to use and synchronize. The cloud is a natural extension or progression of Apple’s methodology. Techies all know to back up their data often and protect themselves from attacks. The average consumer does not do that, hence all of the Windows malware/spyware/trojan proliferation. The cloud offers a viable solution to those problems, while also bringing a couple of new ones to the table. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for everyone, so the cloud will serve a lot of people, but certainly not everyone.

Would you rather secure tens of millions of individuals computers over which you have little access or control, or several thousand centrally-located servers over which you have virtually absolute control?

Look at the Google Apps articles warning about the “major” outages that are supposedly scaring off business users. The outage reports that I’ve seen have all been about very short isolated incidents that were relatively quickly dealt with and service restored within hours, or even minutes. I’ve seen and read about businesses hosting their own services and infrastructure taken down for days under similar situations. How is that better than having world-class IT people on call to resolve problems?

There are advantages and disadvantages to the cloud, just as there are advantages and disadvantages to hosting your own services. There’s plenty of room for both to co-exist in the market.

  4. It would make no sense for Apple to only allow streaming of content. That would mean that such content would not be available when you are offline.

Look for Apple to revolutionize cloud computing so that it works for the user’s benefit not detriment.

  5. Hummm …

“Cloud Computing” in this sense has a well established Model …

  6. I think it opens the door to many options in storage. If you want to store it or not. I think that the cloud concept sounds facinating for things like Apple TV and all the mobile devices, including the hyped “media tablet.”

  7. Wow, I can’t believe how idiotic you anti-Cloud commenters are being. If you want to store a local copy of your file, then go ahead! Get on that plane with a stored copy that you downloaded from the cloud. But why should I have to backup a 22GB HD season of a tv show after I’m done watching it? Are you insane?? Of course everyone is going to be able to let it sit in the cloud if they ever want to download or stream it again. I mean, c’mon people. Rub two of your brain cells together. It’s not that hard to figure out.

  8. I still think the iPod classic will continue, unchanged, until a flash-based iPod can surpass it in capacity. Plus the click wheel has better usability and efficiency as a music player interface; you can operate it easily with one hand. The iPod touch is a great general-purpose computing device, but there are enough customer who care mostly about music (and videos) and great sound, not about apps, games, and taking pictures (and videos).

  9. This is messed up. I just purchased 2 iPod’s 10 days ago and they just came out with new models. I’m imagining that Apple doesn’t allow a trade-up within a certain amount of days, do they?

I would have purchased the iPod Touch but the price was so high and the capacity was so low, but now they have fixed the problem (for me anyway).

If anyone has info about a trade-up, please e-mail me at michaelmanndaveman@yahoo.com.

    Thanks.
