“AT&T is rolling out improvements to its 3G network, and customers are already reporting improvements with devices like the iPhone,” Marin Perez reports for InformationWeek.
“The second-largest wireless operator has faced complaints from a small, but vocal minority about the iPhone’s 3G reception, particularly around large metropolitan areas like San Francisco and New York,” Perez reports.
MacDailyNews Take: At least someone at AT&T is able to read.
Perez continues, “The company announced in May it would be boosting its 3G network by using its 850 MHz band to increase capacity in places like San Francisco. An AT&T representative said the upgrade is currently underway, and subscribers are already taking notice. ‘Over the weekend I noticed something odd going on with my iPhone: It was working!’ wrote TechCrunch’s MG Siegler.”
Perez reports, “The carrier also said it will invest up to $18 billion in 2009, including upgrading its mobile data network to High Speed Packet Access 7.2 technology.”

I’d still give them a “D.”
Like many; love the iPhone, despise the connection.
Still not worth $30 a month!
Sure has not helped here in suburban NYC. No signal in my home, although the coverage map says there should be.
Great. How about MMS?
Ya but it’s still AT&T;
I’ve had no issues with AT&T;here in Columbus, been every bit as good as my preious carrier (Verizon). For my wife who works on the edge of the coverage area, she reports AT&T;is far better, one more reason I enjoy my iPhone is better coverage.
Well At&T;you only have so much time left to become as significant as possible. Your 5 year grace period is coming up… Tic-Toc!!
I just used my iPhone around the US Capitol on Tuesday. With 5 bars I was getting disconnects and poor browser/email performance. When I went on vacation in western Maryland, the 3G coverage was non existent. They have a lot of work to do. It only seems to be good in the suburbs. My work BlackBerry through Verizon has much better coverage downtown as well as in the mountains.
Here in Hoboken, NJ (just across the Hudson river from NYC) it seems like my reception actually got worse the last couple of days. I love Apple but I hate ATT’s service.
nope not here in the Panhandle. They haven’t even fixed edge around here yet alone 3G.
I still get absolutely no signal … at all … here.
No matter how much they invest, it wont help.
Helsinki is just to far away to receive the signal. LOL.
they’d better do something. reception is awful. “more bars in more places?” as long as you’re outside, apparently.
as soon as the iphone becomes available to other carriers, my wife and i are outta here.
The only thing more annoying than AT&T;are the MDN pop up ads.
Here in Greenfield, MA we still do not have 3G coverage. How is improving the 3G network going to help. I love my IPhone, Hate AT&T;’s stance on tethering. Dropped calls.
AT&T;!!! Can you hear me NOW!!!!!!!!
Whatever… Where’s MMS, and Sling over their “network?!” Man they suck…
Reception and performance is rock solid here in Houston.
I have only had T-mobile and now AT&T;(both good reception-T-mobile customer service is awesome)-so very little experience to compare with.
All I’m gona say is that Canada has the es iPhone service… I forget their network name, but the 3G is 36mbps :O that’s like almost 10x the speed of AT&T;Go canadians

Service in the San Francisco Bay Area still sucks. What else is new?
B*** SH**!
I received a text today from them saying they have “enhanced your 3G network to offer more speed, capacity, and cover in Greater Atlanta, North GA & Athens”
We shall see..
No reception at my house in Southern Calif.
Mediocre reception in surrounding area.
There has been absolutely no improvement here in the Los Angeles area.
Still sucks in Seattle.
No reception at my house in Southern Calif.
Mediocre reception in surrounding area.
Hm. I’m in Huntington Beach and get great reception. I work in LA and get great reception. Tried my phone in Boston at the airport–great reception. The only time I had trouble was in a valley in rural Vermont with no cell towers handy (because “they’ll ruin the scenic beauty”).
Still sorely lacking in Philly, especially around peak hours. Forget streaming the office from m.nbc.com then. Barely passable later on..much later. Like midnight or so when traffic finally starts to die down.
