“Laptop vendors will be soon be able to use the same Mini DisplayPort connector found on Apple’s latest MacBooks,” Tony Smith reports for The Register.
“The tiny port is to be included in the upcoming DisplayPort 1.2 specification, the standard’s overseer, Vesa, said last week. The digital monitor link tech is to get stereoscopic display support too,” Smith reports.
“DisplayPort 1.2’s central improvement is a doubling of available bandwidth to 5.4Gb/s. In part, that’s to provide sufficient throughput for a display to switch rapidly – at 120Hz – between left- and right-eye images at 1920 x 1080, enabling stereoscopic 3D pictures,” Smith reports. “However, the increased bandwidth will also allow 3840 x 2160 resolutions to be reached with a colour depth of 30 bits per pixel.”
Smith reports, “Just as resolution can be traded for fast flipping between stereoscopic component images, it can also be reduced to allow simultaneous multi-monitor support over a single connector. Vesa said DisplayPort 1.2 will drive, say, two 2560 x 1600 monitors, or four 1920 x 1200 screens.”

With… remember 18-19 films this year will be released in 3D – so obviously Apple want us to be able to play them on our Macs…

what a hack, there was nothing stopping them before as Apple released the spec for nothing
MS, with dorky glasses, just not the blue-red dorky, but clear with LCD shutters
All we need now is a video card that can produce these images with out requiring the cooling for a small Nuke reactor.
Maybe Apple should use those PA Semi guys to design the next revolution in video cards.

I will be excited about this.. I really want U23D to be released.. All we need now is a Blu-Ray player for the macintosh and we will be sweet..
Maybe apple could also release there own glasses (LCD Shutter Glasses) that could sync veer a USB dongle…
Or at least a 3rd party should…
