How to enable iPhone Emoji icons outside of Japan

“As part of the iPhone OS 2.2 update, Apple enabled the Emoji icons for iPhone users in Japan specifically running on the Softbank network. Unfortunately, there is no way for users outside of Japan to activate the icons,” Aviv Hadar reports for MacBlogz.

“Customers outside of Japan are pretty confused as to why Apple would leave the Emoji icons out of the update for everyone else. Emoji literally means “Picture Character” and in Japan, they are a staple of text messaging culture.,” Hadar reports.

“Software developer Steven Troughton-Smith explains how to enable Emoji icons system-wide,” Hadar reports.

  1. Yeah, because I’m just dying to use “picture character” asian script in my texts.

BTW, why the freak does iPhone constantly chance “texts” to “tests” and “texted” to “tested”? I think mine’s stupid. And that stupidity makes me look stupid. It really doesn’t learn very well.

  2. “Why the freak does iPhone constantly chance ‘texts’ to ‘tests’ and ‘texted’ to ‘tested?'”

Because you’re in idiot who doesn’t understand how to use your iPhone.

You don’t need to interrupt your typing to accept the suggested word.
    • To use the suggested word, type a space, punctuation mark, or return character.
    • To reject the suggested word, finish typing the word as you want it, then tap the “x” to dismiss the suggestion before typing anything else. Each time you reject a suggestion for the same word, iPhone becomes more likely to accept your word.

    RTFM.

  3. It would be nice if the iPhone’s built in dictionary would be able to have users add to it. I have a few words that I send to friends that aren’t in the dictionary and makes it hard to text correctly.

  4. @Master

What what a bastard you are. Seriously. What happens is I’m typing and I see that I’m typing the correct word I want so I move on and send. Then later I see that my perfectly fine words have been changed to iPhone preferred words, e.g. texted to tested.

When I’m typing and constantly watching my thumbs I’m not double-checking every correct word to make sure iPhone doesn’t mash it.

But regarding the learning, I think that when I realize these mistakes I tend to backspace and change my typed word rather than first hitting the “x” by the suggested word. So I guess I’ll need to hit the x first then backspace.

BTW, it might be a fun exercise for you to consider how you could have written your response with the same general content without being a douchebag.

  5. @Nerd Beautiful,

I have the same problem as you. I am so used to just typing the word and moving on that I usually have to go back and delete and re-enter words that my iPhone has “corrected”.

Still, I’d rather have this minor little gripe as opposed to the Blackberry Storm problems my boss is having! He’s been trying to wind me up for weeks with his “Blackberry is best, Storm is going to kill the iPhone”… well his Storm arrived this morning and he’s sending it back tomorrow – it SUCKS!!!!

  6. Apple disabled it cuz there are IDIOTS who will not try anything new.

Look at the comments that say “why the world would I want picture characters?”

It took YEARS for Americans to FINALLY start using SMS. That technology was from the 1990s ferchrissake.

I still remember people asking me “why would I text if I can just call the guy.”

    Duh!

Why don’t you stop using email then and just call everyone in the world?

ANYWAYS… I wish the feature were easier to enable (but then you’d have to make sure the OTHER person has Emoji turned on).

BTW I found Master’s comment pretty funny. It was nasty but that’s what you get when chatting online. Heck, I might get flamed myself (soooo used to it ya newbies! Since CompuServe dayz!!!) Just ignore the flames. Not like they really hurt you if you think the other person is just an idiot too. Hehe.
