“Apple released its latest update to the iPhone 3G this morning,” Jim Lynch reports for ExtremeTech.
“I started the download (which weighed in at about 237 Mbytes) and waited for it to finish. I had no problem installing the update and it took about five minutes or so for it to be complete. Short take: backing up and syncing seems a bit faster, as does updating applications. Thank goodness for that – I remember when it used to take forever just to back up my iPhone back in the days of its initial release,” Lynch reports.
“Before I went to install the 2.1 update, applications would update and it would seem to be take forever. After the new 2.1 upgrade the rest of the updates went faster. I updated eleven applications and it took approximately three minutes for iTunes to update them onto my iPhone. That’s much better before the update,” Lynch reports.

Ok, that was totally useless article.
“I don’t have 3G in my area so that isn’t an issue for me”
my wife got the iPhone 3G a week ago. I just love this device. It’s awesome. But I can’t update it to 2.1 as I don’t have broadband internet. I’m working in Bangladesh right now and using GPRS internet service. So, can’t really download 237MB and update it straight away. And itunes don’t seem to have pause download. Is there any other way of download the whole package with a download accelerator and install it later in iPhone? Please…… 🙁
@Nash: I did the “download only” option, and updated the iPhone later.
I check if there was a pause download option.
(Pause download does work when downloading videos. Maybe if you click the “Downloads”, when it is in the sidebar, you will get more options?)
Pardon… I didn’t check if there was a “pause download” option for the updater file.
Thanks Mark. But I tried few times. It doesn’t do pause. yes, you are right, it works only with video or app download. I’m just desperate to update my iPhone. Thanks anyway…..
Nash, it is possible to download iPhone software updates directly from Apple and to then place them in the right directory on your Mac or PC. The download is done over regular HTTP, so I’d presume that a decent download manager would be able to pause it.
The URL for the 3G iPhone software update is:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-5198.20080909.K3294/iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw
(NB it’s a different download for 2.5G iPhones)
On a Mac, you need to place that file in:
Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
(I don’t know where you’ll need to put it on a PC.)
Since the download is so large, if I were you I’d go somewhere that has a broadband connection, use a PC/Mac there to download the file, and then burn it to a CD.
I found one link to download the package. But I’m not really sure whether it’s the right file and don’t even know how itunes to recognize the file and to install……. let’s see what happens! Oh….
The link is :

Damn the lack of post editing!

Forgot to mention…
The location for the software update file on a Mac is down the Library folder in your user’s home directory.
Thanks Xan. I’m downloading the file right now by using iGetter for Mac. Your help was really needed. I didn’t even know where to put the file to make itune recognise it. thanks a lot. I’ll let you guys know if it works that way…… Thanks again… Oh! wish me good luck guys

Looks like you’ve found the right file.
Good luck!
safari still crashes after a time. Certain actions it just doesn’t like. Other rf signals bump me out of the wifi mode.
downloaded the file. and then paste it on the folder called “iPhone Software Updates”. The opened itunes….. guess what?? itunes can’t find it. even double click on the file doesn’t open in itunes. I’m a bit frustrated. Apple should have thought that not every iPhone owner has broadband internet. They could just have some sort of alternatives for people like me. Anyway, is there any one who can help me with it?? Please help……..
app store shows there’s x number of updates
i click to update, which is now a HUGE pain because the “update all” feature is gone
i have to pick each app one by one
then i go to the update of a certain app… it says FREE
i hit free, then i hit install and i get this:
“This discounted price is only available to customers who own a previous version of this item. To purchase this item at full price, click OK”
it gives me no choice other than to click ok.
then about half of them then say “This item is currently being modified. Please try again later”
(is someone really modifiying it on a Saturday at 5pm?)
this is a bug that needs fixing
nice & cool……. it works great. And yes, battery is as apple said. Cool…….
Anyone else have a problem w. Drag & Dropping of Podcasts to the iPhone after the update?
As LordofLords wrote earlier: If I disable automatic syning of podcasts, the podcast folder simply disappears.
If I try to Drag & Drop, nothing happens – no podcast on the Phone.
Hellllpppp!
