  1. I took quicktime 7.5 off because when I “upgraded” I lost the audio on avi files. Is there someone that uses avi files, and has upgraded to 7.5.5 that can tell me if they have fixed this problem?

I never had the problem. Do you know what KIND of avi gave you trouble? What codec was used? AVI is similar to MOV (or MOOV) in that it is just a container. You can toss a variety of different actual video formats inside it, including Xvid, DivX and MPEG-4. I know the DivX Decoder.component was very poorly programmed for a period of months. I’m on version 6.6.0 an having no troubles. You should check that you have all the latest versions of your QuickTime component files. You may even be missing one. Currently I have 26 components installed of various types. VersionTracker and MacUpdate are your pals.

Well, not if it’s not ready yet.

This software development in a nutshell: Demand, idea, schedule creation, implementation, schedule sliding, quality assurance, schedule sliding, demand demand demand, oops a few new required ideas, implementation, schedule sliding, past predicted completion date, demand, quality assurance, schedule sliding, demand, RELEASE, user complaints, quality assurance, implementation, etc., with various annoying bits of human behavior and business forces thrown in to add further frustration. If the developer is lucky, someone documented the coding along the way for later use in later versions. If not, the next version will suffer from yet another cause of schedule sliding. And so it goes. The most infamous example of course is Windows Vista.

At least 2.1 won’t have the “Version 1.0” effect. But it will have bugs. Smashing as many as possible is important. Waiting to release the version until Friday may be the difference between happy face users ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> and frowny face users 🙁 And even then, someone will slam it as not ready for prime time. The coding process is very often well beyond the comprehension of one human being. The schedule prediction process remains highly nebulous. Human behavior will always be unpredictable. We knew back in the 1970s how mythical it was to use the concept of the “Man Month”. (Props to Frederick Brooks). If a program comes out on time and it works as required, it is called a “Miracle”.

  4. The iPhone software(as Steve stated clearly) is not available till Friday.
I have the iTunes update, quicktime and front row. I have downloaded 2 free HD TV shows-look crisp and nice and are a suprisingly small file size (650Mb for a 45 minute show, 256Mb for a 21 minute one).
    Resolution is 853X480.

The reason for the staggered release of firmware could be server related-as in lets not slam them really hard.

  5. eitltd,

Had the same problem — took the problem avi files and ran them through Visual Hub, output as H.264 QT files — worked like a charm. Never figured out what changed in the QT update, that caused some QT files to *suddenly* stop playing the video, allowing only the audio to be heard.

    Niffy

  6. THE AVI PLAYING QUESTION:
For those interested in the next post is a list of the QuickTime Components I use. I had to separate them from the rest of this message due to unpublished limitations on post length here at MDN.

There are more components but they are specific to commercial software I don’t use. These are in no particular order. This is complete a list as I am aware of. If you know of more, gimme.

Note that all these components are cross-platform. Nearly all of them are available at VersionTracker.com. The list is being incorporated, with descriptions, into an article I will be tossing up on one of my blogs:

    http://macsmarticles.blogspot.com

Note: Lately a lot of old components have been consolidated into Perian and Xiph. It is worth reading about both of them because the old components CAN interfere with the new components and cause problems such as messed up AVI playback.
