Photo of unreleased 4th generation iPod nano leaked?  (with photo)

Business to business website Alibaba.com has posted for sale a “Screen Protector for iPod Nano 4th Gen” along with this photo which shows a device that has what looks to be a stardard iPod Dock Connector at the bottom. Is this the next-gen iPod nano to be introduced during Apple’s September 9th special event?

Alibaba’s “Screen Protector for iPod Nano 4th Gen” page is here.

Digg founder Kevin Rose posted a similar photo (different angle) on August 25. More info here.

  1. Fake? Rather, pretty much confirmed by now. “Peely plastic” makes it fake? Hello, it’s a screen protecting shield. Shrunken screen? Hello, it’s the same screen as on the 3rd gen nano turned 90 degrees.

The consensus seems to be that people liked the elongated nanos more than the phatty. That’s probably the #1 reason Apple is going back to the candybar format.

  2. Toasty: I agree. Its fake. Why would Apple shrink the screen size back?

They won’t. The screen is at least as large as on the 3rd gen.

Growl: Let’s see, the bezel on the left edge is thinner than the bezel on the right edge, and the click wheel isn’t seated flush with the case. FAKE.

As you can easily see on the bottom of the device, the casing is oval, which means the aspect angle is different for the two edges. That the far edge of the screen appears thinner is correct for an oval shape. Likewise for a slightly recessed scroll wheel in the middle (while flush at the edges).

  3. I just assumed the pic was photoshopped. If I wanted to show an iPod with my thin plastic screen protector peeling away, it would be much easier to pshop it than to somehow get it to hang in midair. That doesn’t mean the form-factor is wrong.

As far as the click wheel not being flush, if they went with a new technology to create a morphing click wheel (like in my earlier post), it might be necessary for it to be slightly recessed, hence the shadows. Maybe it’s a small version of the same tech used in the Kindle display…no backlight needed.
