McCain’s veep pick Sarah Palin and technology

Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced his vice presidential running mate yesterday, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, 44.

Casey Mayville reports for Government Technology, “Elected governor in 2006, Palin became Alaska’s first female governor, as well as its youngest. She will be the first politician from Alaska to run on a national ticket in a campaign for vice president.”

“Palin has made efforts to expand the use of technology in Alaska. In 2007, Palin announced a new online training program for workforce development. The Work Ready/College Ready program helped to assess skills and offered training courses,” Mayville reports. “‘The skills needed to enter many vocations are similar to the skills needed to get into college,’ explained Palin at the time. ‘Work Ready/College Ready lets students know what level of skill they need for the occupations they’re interested in, how well they match up in those skill levels and it provides training to reach their goals.'”

Carrie Tait reports for The Financial Post,” Ms. Palin, 44, is a lifetime NRA member who is in charge of a conservative state. She’s bullish on drilling offshore and opening up more of the contentious Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to exploration and production. ‘People are realizing, too, there’s been some deception, I think, from some on what ANWR is all about. Of the 20 million acres up there, we’re looking at 2,000 acres as a footprint,’ she said in the interview. ‘With new technology, with directional drilling, maybe that footprint [will] shrink even more.'”

MacDailyNews Note: CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo talks with Sarah Palin about ANWR drilling, which also touches on technology, in an 11:41 video interview here.

Stefanie Olsen reports for CNET, “Mead Treadwell, a technology-focused venture capitalist and chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, a federal advisory commission to President Bush and Congress on Arctic research issues, said he met Palin when she was the mayor of Wasilla, a small town in Alaska. Treadwell said that she has long been open-minded about the need for technology to solve problems.”

“‘We’re a natural energy economy and you can’t drill on- or offshore without bringing the best technology, like 3D seismic technology to find areas for drilling, directional drilling to exploit it, and satellites. She’s supportive of new tech,’ Treadwell said,” Olsen reports.

“Palin’s father-in-law was at one time staff officer at the Alaska Science and Technology Foundation, the state’s seed capital fund for technology. According to Treadwell, she was critical of her incumbent Republican rival Frank Murkowski in 2006 when he shut the foundation down. In her inaugural address as governor, she emphasized the value of research into science and technology,” Olsen reports.

“Despite Alaska’s absence of a big tech industry, the state’s chief industries, oil and gas, as well as some telecommunications, require cutting-edge technology. Treadwell said that in discussions with Palin about balancing development vs. the environment, she typically points to technology as a solution,” Olsen reports.

While we’re still exploring exactly which tech devices Palin uses currently, Bridget Carey reported yesterday for The Miami Herald of “the BlackBerry-wielding Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who had bloggers buzzing early Friday about her tech-centric lifestyle. She’s also three years younger than Obama.”

MacDailyNews Take: Send Palin an iPhone immediately, Apple!

As for Obama’s V.P. pick, Joseph Biden, 65, Carey reports, “The technology issue isn’t so much of his wired lifestyle as it is about his past stances on technology issues like Internet freedom and privacy. Biden has spoken out against peer-to-peer networks that allow the sharing of music and other copyrighted material. On the topic of Internet privacy, he is in favor of allowing communications companies to hand over a user’s personal information to the government, but with the intention to crack down on child porn and piracy.”

  1. You have on one side, less than four years as a senator (half that time spent campaigning for President) and a career politician (35 years in Congress) with no executive experience. On the other side, you have a former military officer and long-time “maverick” senator, and a former mayor and current state governor who has spent that time eliminating corruption and waste in Alaska’s government. Which one is the ticket for “change”?

There is no way the Democrats can play the “lack of experience” card. Doing so will only expose Obama’s lack of experience (and he’s at the top of his ticket).

  2. This is related to Apple because the Republican campaign has been manipulating the media in Apple-like fashion. There are some very smart people working for McCain, and I have a lot more respect for McCain as a politician and leader of his campaign for President. He’s making some bold decisions.

Obama had a great convention, capped off by a great speech and spectacular “event” on the final night. People would have been talking about it, led by the TV talking heads, all Friday and Labor Day weekend. Instead, only a few hours after the Obama speech, the headlines are all about Sarah Palin being McCain’s VP pick. There were hardly any replays of speech highlights; it was old news before it had a chance to be new news. And it leads right into the Republican convention week; more people will be watching it now than before. That’s amazingly skillful manipulation of the media, worthy of Apple, but with much higher stakes.

  3. You are Exhibit A: Proof that ignorance is no barrier to registering to vote.

If there were fewer of your type, Hillary would be the Democrat nominee for President. Since ignorance won out in the Democratic party, this Democrat is voting for McCain/Palin in 2008.

  4. ST. PAUL, Minn. – Most voters are unfamiliar with John McCain’s new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and many question her qualifications to be president, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup poll.

Meanwhile, another Gallup poll shows Barack Obama maintaining an 8 percentage point lead over John McCain following the end of the Democratic convention Thursday.

Republicans begin their four-day convention Monday here even as Hurricane Gustav picks up steam as it approaches the Gulf Coast. Palin is scheduled to speak Wednesday.

In the poll taken Friday, 39 percent said she is ready to serve as president if needed, 33 percent said she isn’t and 29 percent have no opinion.

That’s the lowest rating any running mate has had since then-Indiana Sen. Dan Quayle was selected in 1988 to join George H.W. Bush’s team.

By contrast, 57 percent of voters rated Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as qualified after Obama selected him last week. Eighteen percent said he wasn’t qualified.

Meanwhile, the Gallup daily tracking poll shows good news for Obama, following the close of the Democratic National Convention and his high-profile nomination acceptance speech Thursday.

The poll, taken from Wednesday to Friday, showed Obama leading McCain by 49 percent to 41 percent for the second day in a row — a campaign high for him.

Before the convention, the two presidential candidates were tied at 45 percent.

  5. Easy to blame Bush, but the fact is that Clintion in 1996 vetoed offshore drilling and said “It’ll take ten years to get it up and running anyhow”.
Just like our Social Security isn’t important, tapping our natural resources isn’t important to the Democrats unless a crises comes up or an election is near.
OJ Simpson even has visual appeal, personality, and confidence.
We might as well be voting for Fabio or Cindy Crawford if appeal is the top priority. Palin taps into every facet of every important category for the GOP.
It is the bomb choice, instead of the hailmary the Dems called it. I love it that the biased info feeder CNN people have to travel all the way to Alaska to even try to find some dirt on Palin. The Alaskans there will dead end their pursuits quickly.
Funny that the most argument anyone has against Palin is the animal rights nuts who in 30 minutes after her speech had a picture of her on the web wearing a real fur coat(in Alaska).
Anyone for an Apple Store in Anchorage??? Maybe can pipe into the Russians secret 5g hotspot.

  6. How incredibly selfish to think that a person thinks they have the right to decide whether they can destroy or not and play as if they were God against a miracle that only something so much greater than us can create. THIS way of thinking is what is truly wrong with our country and no party in office can fix that. Only realization, humbleness, and broken repentance(not atmittance) before our creator can solve this world problem. If you want Nance Pelosi to be your choice God, then heaven help you when it comes time to stand accountable.

  7. Registered Voter: “black, white. or mulatto”

Wow, Another racist pig. How refreshing.”

You might want to check your sheets, you are the racist.

Obama is not black he’s white. HIs mom was white, he’s 50% white, and his dad abandoned him when he was young and lived in another country.

If he’s black because of an absentee dad, and a white mom who actually raised him then YOU are the racist for saying so.

  8. @Alaskan Miner –

I have no doubt Gov Palin is popular. She has taken on Big Oil to take actions which will increase the payouts from the Alaska Permanent Fund to individuals. What’s not to like?

Especially from a bunch of welfare babies. Alaska has the highest percentage of its population receiving public assistance of any US state, almost double New York or California. That’s not considering the Alaska State Government has taken a legitimate business tax and instead of funding things like education, infrastructure and health care, legitimate government functions, has given the proceeds directly to individuals. This technically means every Alaskan is a welfare recipient. 100% of the population. So much for the rugged individualism (at least in the aggregate, I’m sure there are some pretty gnarly individual examples).

Also, if you’re such a tough bunch, why are there more Starbucks per capita in Alaska than in 42 of the remaining 49 states? Sound s like a bunch of latte sippers to me.

Sorry. Back to serious. A motorcycle-riding, moose-shooting beauty queen! Come on, what’s not to like? Especially if she cleaned and cooked the moose herself. The current internet rumor says the brother-in-law is an asshole who richly deserves more that firing, maybe a jail term. Hooray for her. It’s what a Governor should do, unlike Bush as Governor who let enough people be executed without so much as one intervention that I’m pretty sure he fried at least one innocent person. In some aspects, she is my kind of person.

But, McCain is old, and what will come, will come. I’m not afraid of McCain winning. The thought of Gov Palin being thrust into the Presidency and turning the country into some kind of bizarre episode of Northern Exposure leaves me somewhere between worried and terrified. We’ve had enough cowboys (Regan and GW). We don’t need Maverick.

The only remaining hope is the Republican Convention will decide to grow up and select a serious candidate. The primaries were just for guidance. It’s not too late.
