As of 6am EDT Tuesday, all three models (8GB black, 16 GB black or white) of Apple’s hot-selling iPhone 3G “were sold out in 21 states, according to Jim Neal, a retired PR man living near Kansas City who took the time to check each of Apple’s 188 U.S. retail stores using the company’s iPhone availability widgets,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt blogs for Fortune. “‘All told,’ he writes, ‘117 Apple stores reported having sold out of all models and only 27 stores indicated they had all three models in stock.'”
“The states reporting no stock on hand were Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

“More bares in more places”
That’s the dyslexic grizzly market.
Sorry, that’s 3:00 PM, yesterday, July 14th
A web page is a “widget” now?
@ Rich Apple Person
Is that what Apple is saying or are those the deranged voices in your head?
People’s sense of entitlement just boggles my mind.
Called a Dallas store and after they hmmmed, and hawwwwwed a bit about availability, I suggested sometime late next week and the guy said that that should be no problem.
The issue of get some, sell some, out again being the key issue.
en
What’s the shortage due to Ballmer keep smashing them whenever he sees one on MSFT’s campus?
“Ahhh yes nothing like telling customers to screw off”
Don’t be an idiot. A MILLION iPhones were purchased in 3 days! No other CE product has come close to selling so fast.
“In Spain we never had any to sell out of in the first place!”
No? Telefonica in Spain sold 31,000 over the weekend.
@freebeer
hahaha, yes…
I’ll bet that, just like the iPod, heaps of MS employees will be smuggling iPhones onto campus; that is, until Uncle Fester issues an edict for them to leave them in their cars.
Paul: 31,000 ? Thats not true. What is your soure. The national news (Antenna 3) daid it sold 3,000. One of the only stores that actually had any (Movistar main showroom in Madrid) sold 800 on the first day. If only they had supplied spain with 31,000@!!
Sorry, that should read:
Spark: 31,000 ? Thats not true. What is your source. The national news (Antenna 3) said it sold 3,000. One of the only stores that actually had any (Movistar main showroom in Madrid) sold 800 on the first day. If only they had supplied spain with 31,000@!!
By the way, 200,000 people signed up for information about the iPhone in Spain. To put things into context…
Apple let us down here. Badly. It was just empty hype.
I went to get one in Manhattan Beach, CA yesterday… There was still a line.
“More bares in more places”
Maybe you ought to do something about the mass immigration of nudists to your area.
@Macromancer…. I’m beginning to think that R.A.P. is a troll…. (@C1 and Ampar – I know, I’m kinda slow on the uptake sometimes)
I’m standing in the Apple store in Pleasanton,CA. The website says they have iPhones, but a sign at the door says they do not. The staff is aware of the discrepancy, but seems unconcerned.
So much for trusting the website.
DanielN:
Your local store must be using MobileMe to “push” their inventory data to their web page.
@Paul,
My source for the 31K sold in Spain is Piper Jaffrey. See article at appleinsider.com
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/07/14/a_look_at_whos_making_iphone_3g_purchases_thus_far.html
@Spark: well if you read that link it says that they are estimated sales by Piper Jaffrey. i.e. they are guessing.
On Saturday, my wife and I waited for 5 hours to purchase two iPhones. When we finally made it to the front of the line we were told that only current AT&T;customers could purchase the iPhone. At this point, all non-AT&T;customers were turned away. Apparently, in some imaginary world, there exists half-activated phones that only current customers can purchase. Or is it preference for current customers who are paying extra to upgrade. I found this to be absolutely ridiculous, and I hope you do too.
Well maybe Rogers in Canada could ship you some, despite calming to be sold out, all the stores I have called has them in stock (8 GB Only) so maybe what they meant was we are sold out of the 16GB and that is the only one anyone seems to be interested in:-( Cause we are locked into a 3 year contract so we need the extra space for future growth.
Spanish IPhone ‘Still Not Arrived’

Hey everyone that’s berating Apple for lack of foresight or underestimating demand have no clue. No matter how successful you previous product launch is you can never profess to know whether your next product is going to be a hit to the tune of 4X. I’m still waiting to upgrade but demand is still strong in my area. I may have to try alternate tactics like “Being Patient”. Anyone ever see a response to any phone suppliers product like this through any carrier before (besides Apple in gen 1 Iphone)? Yeah I thought so. So for all the posturing and whining and gnashing of teeth, just suck it up and relax people, this kind of thind is bound to happen when you have step function demand. I think Apple and it’s world partners are doing a heck of a job considering.
The photo is fake… Right!??
