As of 6am EDT Tuesday, all three models (8GB black, 16 GB black or white) of Apple’s hot-selling iPhone 3G “were sold out in 21 states, according to Jim Neal, a retired PR man living near Kansas City who took the time to check each of Apple’s 188 U.S. retail stores using the company’s iPhone availability widgets,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt blogs for Fortune. “‘All told,’ he writes, ‘117 Apple stores reported having sold out of all models and only 27 stores indicated they had all three models in stock.'”
“The states reporting no stock on hand were Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

Yesterday in San Francisco at 1PM the line was a block long.
It may not be sold out in my state (SC), but it is sold out in my area (the Midlands). I thought I would just roll out at my leisure and get the new iPhone, but I was sadly mistaken. “Sir, we’re sold out of the iPhone” is all I heard.

In Denver at Cherry Creek mall there was about a 25-person line just before 2pm.
Under the old activation-less model that might have worked, but certainly not now.

yup… still waiting for mine here in Iowa. i was 4 spots behind the last iphone at the AT&T;store i was at, but did a ‘Direct Fulfillment Order’ so i’m supposedly due to be getting mine in the next shipent. no word yet on when that might be. =/

Actually with the in store activation and thus nobody buying 5 phones to go off and sell overseas, you’d think there would be more phones available. I think they just did not have enough phones to meet demand.
Luckily for me the “go early Saturday moning” theory worked. Got the last 8 gig in the store.
So Apple’s message to customers: If you weren’t stupid enough to waste your time on line and had to work or wanted to spend time with friends and family your out of luck. Ahhh yes nothing like telling customers to screw off
the shop downstairs (in brussels), sold out in 20 minutes, but they only had about 20 iPhones !
