“Although Apple has yet to officially release iPhone Software v2.0, readers have discovered an active download link that will allow you to manually download and then install the update on your current iPhone ahead of time. Included is a step-by-step guide on how to update your iPhone using the file download,” AppleInsider reports.
“AppleInsider reader ‘Jared’ notes that the new software can be obtained from this link [225MB, see full article]. The build number of the software is ‘5A347,’ slightly newer than build ‘5A345’ that was discovered to be running on iPhone demo units that began making their way to Apple and AT&T retail stores a bit earlier in the week,” AppleInsider reports.
“If you download the software… you will need to manually tell iTunes to use the file that that you just downloaded, as iTunes will be unaware of its location on your hard drive,” AppleInsider reports.

Just installed. Was a bit apprehensive about an update that was not “officially” released, but all went fine and now have the App Store icon proudly on the iPhone.
All my other data was successfully transferred over. Had to re-sync music, movies, etc.

Yes be careful not to unlock your iPhone!!!!! If you did you should have bricks thrown at you for unlocking you iPhone and not expecting this.

Jailbroken and Unlocked are two totally different things.
Unlocking allows you to use your phone with different SIM cards. Jailbreaking allowed you to install hundreds of useless apps and bad games.

What the hell is wrong with Apple? Why do you have that wonderful accelerometer and fail to use it to its greatest potential?
I never bothered to send a request as feedback on the Apple website about shit like the universal landscape keyboard. I figured there’s no way that Apple employees who use the iPhone all day and night haven’t figured out how much better it could be if landscape mode was made of greater use. Even still I’m sure plenty of people have complained about it already so they must be ignoring them. Nevertheless I’ll do it. Perhaps I’ll do it once a month until they get the picture.
Okay, I’m in the Re-Sync part of the update, and my 4Gig iPhone shows that I have only 3.3Gigs available, so the update has taken about 200MB of space, which just about matches the 225MB download.
I did have a couple brick messages, but I get that sometimes when I normally sync, which I attribute to my using an old AluPB with USB and not USB2.
Everything seems fine, now that it is reloading all my backed up files.

Why did Apple release the apps but not give us the update to use them?
Just updated my phone on o2 in the UK had the same scare as ‘British Mac Head’
When the phone restart it was set to the America iTunes and App Store.
Found that changing the Time Zone to London set the Store to the UK.
Still can’t carry out a normal restore yet through iTunes. I guess they haven’t posted the file yet.
Just royally screwed up my iTouch. I forgot that Apple was going to charge for the update.. which is probably why I now have to totally restore my touch and wait until Apple lets me use the apps I just bought from the iTunes store…

Seems to work OK in the UK. I haven’t changed the locale yet but I did download the “Remote” app and am controlling iTunes on my Mac Pro with the big speakers from my iPhone. It’s schweet. I recommend you get it. it’s made by Apple and it’s FREE

Actually it is set to UK already and the apps are £5.99 which is, as Mac Daddy would say, “Not too Shabby”
Just updated… worked fine for me, but I did have to re-sync my music. Actually, that was a good thing, as I decided to leave off a couple of albums in order to have room for the apps I’m about to download…

Well, the Re-Sync went smoothly, and now I’m Syncing about 20 of the free Apps from the Appstore that I already downloaded. It’s so cool how small they are. I feel like how I did when I first owned a Mac SE back in 1987. It’s nice to have code in small packages.
Just wanted to add my name to the list of those who’ve successfully installed this over a jailbroken unlocked 1.1.4 and now have a fully-functional iPhone 2, working on a non-iPhone O2 contract. Result!
Hi, I installed OS 2.0 and everything was perfect…BUT…
I cannot Sync Apps. The Applications tab in iTunes 7.7 shows the list of Apps I downloaded, but it’s disabled! Is somebody experiencing the same?
I wonder if the AT&T;/Apple accounting changed with the release of the new iPhone. If Apple now gets all the money coming to them up front instead of monthly for 2 years then iPhone users may look forward to $10 updates. Just like with the iPod touch.
I followed the directions but received this message: “An unknown error occured (1403).”

In conclusion, my response to your post was and is 100% accurate. Unlocking is not good for your iPhone, especially when updating the software. If you have been “jailbreaking” or “unlocking” your iPhone and it gets “bricked”… deal with it… you knew the possible consequences of such an action.
I’m going to throw down with Roberto on this one, and wait for iTunes to find it for me on its own… tamales. I’ve got a few apps ready and waiting, and waiting, and…
