The Guardian’s Charles Arthur offers up a handy “guide to knowing what Apple’s going to release next” and explains what to “expect in iPhone 2.0.”
• A three-megapixel camera
• Video
• WiMax (only about a 5% chance of this)
• 3G
• Better Bluetooth profiles
• Voice and speed dialing
As for “what won’t be there,’ Arthur writes:
• SMS forwarding. Americans don’t understand SMS, and aren’t about to start now.
• GPS. Expensive, sucks power, imprecise, and isn’t standard on the vast majority of phones, so Apple isn’t losing by not using it.
• a cheap one.

It won’t sell in Japan without GPS.
exactly what am I supposed to be suprised about here?
Chrissyone , are you some sort of export on japanese buying habits ?
I don’t see hello kitty having GPS but it sells like toilet paper when the plague is in town
If she truly is an export then she may well be in the know
one more thing…
I’m sure GPS works really well in the concrete jungle of Shinjuku station….
FWIW, I tend to agree on the GPS side of things. Some folks seem to forget that the “S” in GPS is Satellite. And that the iPhone would need line-of-sight to make and maintain a connection.
This seems like a PIA to me and wouldn’t work in the case I’d most like it where my beloved iPhone is sitting next to me in my car. Unless, of course there is some kind of antenna dongle. In that case, my objection would move from, “it won’t work.” to cumbersome, inelegant, and annoying. Three characteristics I’m betting Apple will avoid.
There is GPS built into it. My AT&T;corporate rep for my company said they were only told 2 things about it… 3G and GPS.
The writer is a loser trying to get hits.
GPSatellite…
Whereas the tower triangulation method currently employed works WONDERFULLY and ANYWHERE I can get a signal.
After actually USING iPhone’s method o’ mapping (which works even in the basement of our office, and I’ve used it to plan out routes before even setting foot in the car- As well as during a drive), I think that using a satellite to get your bearings is a step backwards.
Actually GPS stands for Global Positioning System
“SMS forwarding. Americans don’t understand SMS, and aren’t about to start now.”
You Americans don’t understand SMS? Are you serious? Is he serious?
GPS is imprecise? They land planes with it, drop bombs through windows with it, and it takes me to within a few feet of the latest geocache. I wonder what the author would consider as precise, and how would anyone get it?
I am skeptical about built-in GPS, especially when those who need it will have 15 3rd-party external add-on choices soon. Perhaps improved triangulation location on their existing software would do the trick using much less battery power. The iPod didn’t put FM internally, but provided an external solution for those who wanted it. Don’t be so disappointed if the new iPhone doesn’t have GPS.
I want it to have 3GPS.
No, wait.
eLEVen GPS….
I would be disappointed if it doesn’t have GPS. That seems to be the feature that I most miss. I like the software emulation that currently exists, but it is not quite accurate enough. Last week, I got lost and it could only get me within four blocks of my actual position. Since I had no idea where I actually was, I still had to stop and ask for directions. Its the first time I’ve had to do that since I bought my iPhone.
The feature I want most is a spam filter for email…then I could use my iPhone for my email…NO MORE MALE ENHANCEMENT ADS!!!
Cire,
next time that happens, look around, find an address, and then search the map for it. That should get you pretty close…
It will have GPS, but it will be external, by a box that can be connected via iPod connector or bluetooth. The GPS box will need (and have) its own power supply, and it can be planted in your car.
The iPhone should not have any new features, just add more memory. Apple should charge $200 above current prices, and then immediately drop prices by $200 a month later.
That way, Apple customers get used to the activity of paying even more at the initial release to get the latest and greatest.
Let’s hope it doesn’t add anything new, because new things drain the battery. Faster data network speeds drain the battery. GPS drains the battery. Video and games drain battery life.
So say no to anything new to the iPhone! New and useful is bad!
If this guy can get off saying that us lousy Americans don’t understand SMS, then I can get off saying he’s a fucking tool.
The great thing about social networking is that a collection of people with no knowledge or expertise on a subject can all come together and pretend they know everything. I love America!
Actually, the full article is pretty good; it is about more than simple predicitions. So, if you just read the MDN synopsis, go back and link to the full article.
I’m with Cire on the need for spam filters. Perhaps we will now be able to add a 3rd party app, like SpamSieve, to do it. The requirement of deleting unwanted mail ONE AT TIME on the iPhone has been my only real disappointment (or gripe) with the product. Copy/Paste could certainly help in many cases, but mail is virtually crippled by the amount of time it takes to clean out mailboxes.
“SMS forwarding. Americans don’t understand SMS, and aren’t about to start now.”
Excuse you?
Spam? Get a Gmail account…:-)
Spam? Spiral slice it and get some cloves. Mmmm……
i’m not buying one if it hasn’t GPS, no way.
and i want google earth (3D)
I thought “iPhone 2.0” was the new software, while the new hardware would simply be 2G (second generation) iPhone, the way the iPods are described. One generally does not see decimal places in hardware version numbers. Consider the movie version of SPEED RACER with the Mach 4, Mach 5 and Mach 6. Hmmm, I wonder if the Mach 5 has an iPod/iPhone dock?
The S in GPS does not stand for satellite. It stands for System, as in, Global Positioning System, whereby the system employs several satellites to triangulate your location. GPS is accurate to within +/- 3 meters. It takes a minimum of 3 satellites to get a fix. The more satellites employed the more accurate the fix.
What is it with you Europeans? Must you always take shots at Americans, given even just the smallest of chances?
“SMS forwarding. Americans don’t understand SMS, and aren’t about to start now.” Jesus…….do you Euros get paid by the insult or something? Or do you collectively suffer from some sort of envy or other complex?
Pardon me for sounding jingoistic for a moment…..if not for we bad ol’ Americans and our “backwardsness”, you fine folks would either speak mostly German or mostly Russian at this point, and likely not even have iPhones, or GPS, or the 3G that you covet so much, or SMS, or any of that other fun stuff that comes with freedom.
So, on this Memorial Day weekend, how about YOU folks take a few moments, knock off the America-bashing for a bit, and follow me and many others in remembering our little contributions to your way of life?
Let the flaming begin!
@ SaleenDriver – I ended up writing a letter to the Guardian about my thoughts on the piece of article. Hoping it’ll do a bit of good, but doubting it also, considering I indicated that I’m one of those “ignorant” Americans.
“What features will be in – and left out of – the next iPhone”
“The article above, that Mr. Arthur wrote, has a comment that ‘Americans don’t understand SMS, and aren’t about to start now.’ Really though, it is my experience, being an American, that most of us understand SMS messaging, at least on a basic level if not on a level par to Europe. I’d like to know why he can get away with throwing insults at Americans in general. Most of us here have a healthy respect for Europeans, especially the British folk.”
Cheers!
Metryq
That was my understanding as well, I’ve noticed a lot of people use them interchangeably, confused by the (rumored) simultaneous release.
This guy is off his rocker! SMS? Come to any American college campus for a day and see how American youth interacts.
@SaleenDriver
Americans will probably start appreciate SMS just like anybody else around the globe once in a while… Even if their superiority complex and lack of auto-criticism may hold them back.
@almux
While your experience may be that some of us have a “superiority complex”, most of us really don’t. Please don’t assume all Americans are the same and keep the insults to yourself.
I’ll respect you if you give the same respect back.
GPS is imprecise? 3 meters accuracy is imprecise? I live in San Jose and the current iPhone location system often has me miles from where I am. Sometimes it is spot on, but you have to check it against the map data. When at home it locates me two miles west on top of a hill where a cell tower lives whether WiFi on or off. And totally useless in most rural areas. As far as battery drain wouldn’t it make sense to have it turn off like wifi? GPS is needed if indeed it will geolocate pics. In any case I am upgrading the day it comes out.
uhh if theres no gps, whats with all of the references in the iPhone 2.0 code about geotagging and the actual letters GPS?
apple adds things to their products that havent been big in other devices, so i think that GPS in a influential phone like the iPhone would be genius.
btw, there prolly wont a cheap iPhone until 3rd or 4th gen cause they didnt release iPod mini for a while after the iPod.
@ChrisW357
I’m sorry if i’ve hurted some americans who don’t hang to a superiority complex.
Someone should create Bingo cards using iPhone predictions, it would be fun!
So, which predictions are for the new iPhone and which ones are for the original iPhone with the 2.0 software upgrade?
Just a quick note on the current iPhone locater, when I’m in a moving car (even a slow moving car) the circle is much bigger and less accurate. When I’m standing still, I’m in Long Beach CA, it is dead on.
I was in a boat in a Florida swamp a few months ago and the locater nailed my position.
Saleen, you are right on point! Enough already with the America bashing. And as far as Almux goes and his so called “superiority complex” theory, I think it’s quite the opposite: An inferiority complex on the offender’s parts.
Spare us the anti USA crap, just review the damn phone.
Actually, I’m a usanian, and I have no idea what SMS forwarding is. SMS itself is kinda the text messaging thingee, yeah? I don’t use that either.
but aren’t all Americans stupid??
my prediction: GPS included. Out of the box it will provide more accurate location in the Maps application and will offer geo-tagging of photos/videos. Then, Apple will make available on day 1 of the App store opening, a navigation app that will use the GPS, OpenGL, and google maps to basically utterly destroy Garmin and Tom Tom. They will offer a nice little dash mount that holds the iPhone sideways so you can easily use it in the car. Yet another market Apple will barge into and take over.
All it needs is Video Conferencing with ichat, and GPS
If it wasn’t for us Brits the iPhone would look more like a Zune (we all know how awful American designers are).
Without America we’d be speaking German? Last I knew the USA joined the second world war when it was pretty much over.
Maybe we wouldn’t be so anti American if you could stop invading counties for their oil and then pretending it’s to stop terrorism. How on earth is Iraq linked to the Trade Centre tradegy?!
Go blow up Hiroshima…. weapons of mass destruction indeed.
And before you say “yeah but but but it stopped WW2!!!!” Germany had already surrendered when you were busy nuking those Japanese families.
Pricks
but aren’t all Americans stupid??
No, some american folks that hold on to their european heritage are actually quite smart. Recent immigrants too.
And before you say “yeah but but but it stopped WW2!!!!” Germany had already surrendered when you were busy nuking those Japanese families.
America stopped WW2? Who the f**k believes this shit? (I mean, apart from americans).
foljs
sounds like you are picking a fight.
Don’t worry, we know how it will come out….
Ummm isn’t the new iphone rollout gonna be a massively international one? American’s don’t know how to use sms??? What is this guy smoking? And even if they didn’t, the iphone is no longer America exclusive… they will sell like hotcakes everywhere, even in countries that have been using sms for a long time. I think Apple will improve the sms’ing on this new rumoured phone.
outlaw: “And before you say “yeah but but but it stopped WW2!!!!” Germany had already surrendered when you were busy nuking those Japanese families.”
yawn.
is that the best you got?
I’d bring up Pearl Harbor, but.. meh, why bother.
If you’re a Brit, what are you doing talking about the American’s invading anything?
on the topic of iPhone2, I expect:
3g obviously
some form of GPS
higher resolution camera, including video
more ram and processor power
brighter screen
“Spam? Spiral slice it and get some cloves. Mmmm……”
Ironically, I don’t think anyone has ever been barraged with annoying e-mails from Hormel. Could you blame them?
Forget the iPhone.
This is the phone of the future….

Your Mom BluRay: That was excellent!
I want a WiFi Zune Proximity sensor. Then allow me to send a kill command via WiFi to have the Zune self destruct. Is that too much to ask for?
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
I’m only looking forward to a universal landscape keyboard, copy & paste and all those wonderful new third party applications. So anything else Steve pulls out of his hat will be a surprise to me.
For those of you that don’t know his stuff- that’ll be most of you- Charles Arthur is generally an excellent and entertaining technology commentator and I think you must agree that his analysis of how Apple does things was equally spot on.
That aside, I’m sure GPS would doubtlessly be cool but I really would simply love a radio on my iPhone/iPod. I don’t know if it’s the case- correct me if I’m wrong- but I’ve been told that most radio in the US is not too good. Not so here in the UK. Among much else, I just love my BBC Radio 4- a spot of ‘The News Quiz’, ‘From our own correspondent’, ‘The Archers’ etc etc while out walking the dog makes my day- but, needless to say, I’m tragically forced to use a non-Apple product if I want to access the airwaves in addition to my recorded music. It’s called a Samsung mobile phone. Oh dear. But I’d have an iPhone (or iPod) like a shot if it granted me the reasonable consumer choice of having access to radio. Not much to ask is it? Not what you’d call cutting-edge technology.
Actually, Apple could go one better than any rival (as they always do) and incorporate DAB radio into their iPods and iPhones. I’d buy it tomorrow.
“SMS forwarding. Americans don’t understand SMS, and aren’t about to start now.”
asshole! i’m with @freefromdesign. sms and the 14-25 year olds get along just fine. however, makes sense that apple might not adopt it, since it would be a difficult feature to incorporate if apple wants the app to stay simple.
If it wasn’t for us Brits the iPhone would look more like a Zune (we all know how awful American designers are).
Well, that’s one part of your comment that’s possibly true – but I’d argue that Apple’s product design is probably a team effort.
Without America we’d be speaking German? Last I knew the USA joined the second world war when it was pretty much over.
It’s true that it took the USA the best part of 27 months to join in WWII and it’s also true that they did more than a little bit of business with the Nazis in the meantime: there are some truly photos of SS types drinking Coca-Cola that Atlanta’s finest would prefer people not to see.
However, it’s worth remembering that – at the time – American foreign policy was pretty much not to engage itself in the ‘Old World”‘s squabbles. Nazi Germany wasn’t officially an enemy of the USA until December 11, 1941 when the European Axis powers (for reasons passing understanding) decided to join Japan ‘s earlier declaration of war. Had Hitler and Mussolini not made that crucial error of judgement, it’s extremely likely that the UK would still have been fighting solo (with the support of the Canadians and ANZACs) in the European theatre even as the A-bomb was dropping on Nagasaki.
Maybe we wouldn’t be so anti American if you could stop invading counties for their oil and then pretending it’s to stop terrorism. How on earth is Iraq linked to the Trade Centre tradegy?!
With the best will in the world, we (the UK) got suckered into that as well. God save us from politicians with a sense of destiny.
Go blow up Hiroshima…. weapons of mass destruction indeed.
There were two choices available to the Allies in the Pacific: take each island one-by-one and incur and inflict hundreds of thousands of dead and injured and elongate the war in the Pacific by 18 months or drop the bomb and inflict a massive strategic blow whilst minimising the casualties of Allied forces.
Either way, people were going to die in massive numbers and whilst the massive loss of civilian life remains an ethical dilemma, it should be noted that neither the Japanese or German governments had any such qualms when they were in the ascendency.
In short, war is hell and it’s dirty: that’s why it should only be entered into in the most extreme of circumstances and by people who have an appreciation of the gravity of what they’re doing.
And before you say “yeah but but but it stopped WW2!!!!” Germany had already surrendered when you were busy nuking those Japanese families.
Germany – yes; Japan – not so much!
As I said earlier: Japan’s military was committed to making the US fight island-by-island using every available body including civilians.
Even after the two bombs were dropped and Emperor Hirohito was on the verge of announcing the surrender of Japan, elements of the Japanese military attempted a coup to prevent the surrender.
It could easily have taken 18 months to island hop to the main Japanese islands and then fight a war for the Japanese mainland in what is pretty difficult territory at the end of extremely stretched supply lines.
I may not be keen on the way the US throws its weight about in the here and now, but I’ll be damned before I accept that any of the Allied powers in WWII should have put the lives of soldiers at unnecessary risk, especially when many of those troops had already been through the hell of the Normandy landings.
a couple of nice features would be the ability to make shortcuts to turn on the Wi-Fi and to open Contacts.
I think I will buy one of the new iPhones along with an OtterBox case.
But until we know for sure what the new iPhone will be like, anybody’s guess is as good as anyone else’s.
I agree with MCCFR. Constantly bringing up WWII when discussing something which does not have anything to do with it is pathetic, but undermining the US’s contributions to the war and the subsequent course of history would be stupid. It is also irrelevant in this case, however.
It does not change the fact at all the Americans DON’T seem to understand SMS.
SMS is used significantly more in Europe and other countries than the US, where instant messaging and emailing – I assume? – is used more. The simple fact that the iPhone a) does not show the letter count when typing an SMS b) does not allow to save an SMS as a draft to send at a later point c) does not allow forwarding d) does not support emoticons, MMS or any other standard features of messaging present in any other European phone – is a strong hint that Apple does not consider SMS to be important.
I love my iPhone, and I’m hoping that some of these things will be amended in V2.0 and beyond – but I’m not surprised that an US based company with primarily US based interests and experiences did not find this features important enough to implement in 1.0.
FACT TIME:
Of course americans understand SMS, but they would rather use the telephone to talk to their friends. Americans are also a LOT more friendly than Brits.
In the UK, no-one can afford to call their friends, they have to text them.
The American government is shit, but americans (the people) are often the best you can find. Unlike the UK, where the government is shit and the people are mostly wankers too.
The USA supplied amazingly huge amounts of munitions and food and fuel to the Brits during the first years of WW2. When Mr Hilter decided to attack Russia, the pressure was off the UK, and they started to build up their pathetic army etc. again, with the help of stuff from the USA.
Who won WW2?
Hitler fucked up (lousy strategist), the Russians sacrificed millions of troops to stop him, and the USA supplied most of supplies to the UK and the Russians.
You decide….
Japan? Well Japan got it in the neck with the nukes because they had treated so many Allied troops so badly – torture, slavery, beheadings, etc. etc.
People were seriously pissed with the Japs, and for good reason.
The Germans treated allied prisoners well, for the most part.
i’m one of those euro-wise-guys, and i have never used SMS forwarding !
however, it is true that europe was far ahead for a while, better networks, better phones, much earlier adoption of SMS, etc…
Radio on an iPhone?
NEVER going to happen.
Thats what 3rd party crap is for.
Walk along the street listening to iPhone radio – IN THE UK?
Are you NUTS?
Mugged and beaten, iPhone gone.
Rest of the time, car or home, you have radio already.
Remember, in Britain, only criminals and police are allowed to have guns – the people have to use pointed sticks to defend their homes……
I personally wonder why the wireless carriers here in the U.S. actually charge extra for text messaging (relatively tiny bits of information) and voice communication (a bandwidth intensive / real-time critical task) is often just included in the plan. It seems backwards to me.
And all this political talk… AAAAUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!!!
Blah, blah, blah. Some Brits get off bashing Americans (others get off bashing “the Continentals”, and even more enjoy bashing both). So the Brits have an inferiority complex to deal with. Big deal.
iPhone 2.0 will have to have GPS to be worth a buy (unless the heavy discounting they’ve been talking about – $200 for the phone – is true). I have GPS on my BB Pearl and it works amazingly well with Google Maps. I get a stronger, more immediate, and amazingly accurate signal with it than I do with my Garmin GPS receiver. And it is far better than the triangulation than my boyfriend has on his iPhone 1.0 or my brother with his Verizon En-V.
I don’t really understand what’s so special about SMS forwarding (unless it means something better than forwarding an SMS that you get from someone else, which, um, you can do now). Maybe that has a different meaning in the UK?
childish
Having been all over the world, I can say that a majority of people outside the U.S. understand that American citizens do NOT make choices such as going to war, or national and international policy decisions. In fact, most of us are against everything Bush has done in the past eight years and are embarassed by his actions. The fact that these morons are not aware of this merely indicates the level of knowledge/education they have.
Blaming a group of people for the poor decisions of their leaders is unfair. Bad leaders pop up all the time, in ALL countries. It doesn’t make the citizens bad people.
I hope the new iPhone has GPS, other than 3G that’s all I want.
My question is…who hasn’t used SMS somehow, someway? I find the current iPhone texting implementation just fine and dandy. If they can improve it…great! If not, I and most people aren’t missing much.
@outlaw:
I have two words for you……Lend-Lease.
You see, being a student of history, I already know that by the time America entered WWII, over two years after it started, Europe was mostly conquered. Only GB was left, and they were being pounded from above, and starved from below. Britian can be a lonely little island when the rest of Europe is in an enemy’s hands………………..
So when we came in in late 1941, “it was pretty much over”? Really? You really wish to live and die with that statement? So why did WWII last almost 4 more years? “Pretty much over” indeed. You, sir, need to read a book, get off the Daily Kos website, and gather a few facts.
As for the rest of your rant, it isn’t even worth commenting on. Again, more lies and stupidity taken right off the Daily Kos/Huffington Post/Moveon.org triad of America-hating silliness.
But please, pray continue your rants, They are worth many laughs.
“GPS is imprecise? They land planes with it, drop bombs through windows with it, and it takes me to within a few feet of the latest geocache. I wonder what the author would consider as precise, and how would anyone get it?”
sadly, they frequently drop the bombs in the wrong place, don’t they. getting a bomb in a window isn’t that cool if it is the wrong window….
…or in the current US expansionist wars case, in the wrong window of the wrong house in the wrong country.
“I want horizontal orientation in EVERY app. Especially Mail.
— jcw”
couldn’t agree with you more.
“As for the rest of your rant, it isn’t even worth commenting on. Again, more lies and stupidity taken right off the Daily Kos/Huffington Post/Moveon.org triad of America-hating silliness.”
nice SaleenDriver. i especially love the way you connect two totally unrelated things (liberal ideas and a posters lack of historical knowledge) and attempt to connect them in the best right wingnut fashion.
it may come as a shock to you, but being ignorant of history is not cornered by any particular political slant. although it does seem to be more popular in America than anywhere else.
“Having been all over the world, I can say that a majority of people outside the U.S. understand that American citizens do NOT make choices such as going to war, or national and international policy decisions. the trouble is, in theory at least, in a democracy (ok, really a republic) the people choose the leader. so having chosen a moron, and then re-elected him after his credentials where well known, you can see why people might feel the general populace might deserve a little blame.
saying most of us are ashamed of the shrub is only proof. if that is true, how in the hell did he get the job, and why have we left him there? because we just don’t care enough to actually DO anything.
we deserve ALL the blame……
as an American I SMS your mom to let her know I’m coming by for a blow job with no problem…
Why do we have to talk about WW2 politics on a mac site? – its getting in the way of all the valid comments!
I for one am glad that 3G is almost guarenteed to be included – I only get a 3G reception in my house!
Also, I would really love to have increased SMS ability – I use txting way more than voice, and currently have unlimited texts and only use about 10 minutes on my calling plan – so id like SMS to be a little more advanced, although it would make do as it is at the moment I *must*.
But – I would neeed to have MMS. I do not see why this was not included, as it is in the majority of phones released after like 2001!. Sending via email just isnt as good if your friend cant get their email on their phone. GPS would be nice, but id much prefer better bluetooth functions
Just my two pence
Please tell me what SMS is, and of what use it would be to an average Cell Phone User?
MDN Magic Word- “easy”
SMS = Short Message Service
See Wikipedia:

iPhone has great SMS right now. What’s the big deal?
“Walk along the street listening to iPhone radio – IN THE UK?
Are you NUTS?
Mugged and beaten, iPhone gone”.
??? Must be horrible to live in fear.
just for the euro-american conflict ..
Someone stated that if it weren’t for the americans we would all be speaking russian or german by now…
I would suggest reading some history instead of thinking that saving private ryan (although a fun movie) is history.
Even if the Germans had taken over Europe, everybody would still be speaking their native language + german, instead of their native language + english, like now…. (maybe even native + german + english).
Secondly GPS is a system (American none the less, although Galileo is in the works) that many Europeans use and like to use.
No it doesn’t need “clear” line of sight to the sky, it even works from inside my glove compartment some times. It is really helpful and I know many people that won’t get iphones because it doesn’t have GPS.
Oh, btw, it’s more likely that the USA entered the war because of the middle east oil deposits, than it is because of it’s good will to “save” europe.
Finally, the people of the USA are normal folks right the rest of us. Their only problem is their “way of living” and their government’s misuse of it.
PS. I will certainly buy an iphone 2 if it has GPS and the Destinator platform to use it.
You mean… the war is over!? Finished? Why didn’t anyone tell me for chrissakes!?
America is almost bankrupt. Bush is fighting a war that can not be won and the liberated have long turned against their liberators. About 50% of Americans actually voted for Bush twice (2x)! So, there must be some truth in the “stupid / ignorant”. Thanks for the help in WWII USA and Canada and UK. But that was then and this is now.
Danke schön!
The camera is said to be only 3 megapixels? If that’s a user-facing videophone camera, good, but I’d want 5 megapixels (can’t really expect much better?) for a forward-facing one.
I’d definitely want GPS, so long as I could turn it off – as rumoured elsewhere – if it is power hungry. I saw a test of cellphone position triangulation on the UK Channel 5 TV’s ‘The Gadget Show’ and the best it could do in London was to get the position within one mile. Perhaps it was all those buildings. (I gather that GPS doesn’t always work well in built-up areas as well.) Also, even though cellphone coverage in the UK is very high, I’d still like GPS for those times when I’m up on the hills out of cellphone range. Might the phone store the maps for a chosen area so they don’t have to be downloaded there and then (out of range, remember?)
The big thing for me is contract cost. I’d happily pay a lot to purchase the hardware – but what I don’t want to have to do is to pay the same again, or more, in the first year just to operate it – and I want an umlimited data plan, also. £15 a month would be acceptable – instead of the minimum £35 a year iPhoners pay in the UK now.
. where would americans be w/o england? Speaking Navajo

that would be Spanish, metamad.
¿Comprende?
GPS?
The phone GPS only gives you a relative location. If you need directions then use Google maps to get turn by turn directions or if you have a GPS then I use my iPhone to get the addresses that I need at the time and then plug that into my Garmin Nuvi. Works great
It will have all of those plus lots more

Actually the indians of present US threw out the spanish, only keeping their horses.. so more like navajo, kiowa´ish, sioux or something
Hummer is a poet.
@Hummer
Here’s another Asian perspective.
When we see something of value, we should ponder it; when we disdain something, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves.
To get back to the topic of SMS.
SMS is very useful in many situations. If I’m in a meeting I will have my phone on silence and not take calls, but will read a SMS. If your buddy is travelling and you don’t know where he is and you don’t want to wake he because you don’t know in which time zone he is, send a SMS. It’s useful when you don’t want to be intrusive.
Kids use it a lot, my daughter is on here third mobile and wants an iPhone for her 14 years birthday. She will most likely get one…
In Europe when you cross borders you most likely get into a new operator and thus roaming and is charged an arm and a leg, use SMS.
BTW, did you know that SMS was just a neat feature made possible by playful engineers who designed the GSM system without their superiors knowing it and not something telecos implemented?
With SMS you can do other tricks too… Write -K- and then your message and send it toimisto your children who do not have their iPhone open. When they turn their iPhone on you will receive a message and you can call them and tell them what they did wrong.
I love my new iPhone that I will use few weeks before I get the new one and my mother gets this onw

I have never heard that. No wonder the Mexicans lost the war…there weren’t any around….?
“• SMS forwarding. Americans don’t understand SMS, and aren’t about to start now.”
Yeah. We silly stupid americans. We just have this little thing called email that can do everything SMS and MMS can do but without the rip off premium charges.
I was told by Verizon that all phones sold in the U.S. within the past couple years has GPS built in and that it was a law.. So that the phones could be tracked. Not that the GPS has to be used for mapping, but that it had to be included so they could find you, in case you fall off a rock climbing, get abducted or are in the car in OJs next freeway chase..
Joking aside, isn’t this true and wouldn’t it just need software to make more use of what’s already there?
No GPS is a deal-breaker for me. The last time I used Apple triangulation to navigate via Maps, I ended up at Walgreens instead of Walmart!!! It sucks! No SMS forwarding? Come on! Everyone has that except the iPhone!
I don’t care about SMS anyway.. I want iChat instead..
I love all of these American bashing morons. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Steve Jobs is an American, and Apple is an American company. If you hate the USA so much, what are you doing using their products?? Not to even mention that most of you tools would be speaking German right now if it weren’t for the USA.
” . . . most of you tools would be speaking German right now if it weren’t for the USA.”
Surfing on their iMachs?
@outlaw
If it wasn’t for us Brits the iPhone would look more like a Zune (we all know how awful American designers are).
— Gee, how long after the iPhone was released in the States did it even GET to the UK? WTF?
Without America we’d be speaking German? Last I knew the USA joined the second world war when it was pretty much over.
— Sorry you didn’t make it through your first 6 years of school
Maybe we wouldn’t be so anti American if you could stop invading counties for their oil and then pretending it’s to stop terrorism. How on earth is Iraq linked to the Trade Centre tradegy?!
–Hmm, talk to Tony Blair about who were the first people into Iraq. Clue: It wasn’t just the US.
Go blow up Hiroshima…. weapons of mass destruction indeed.
–Again?? Why do you want that?
And before you say “yeah but but but it stopped WW2!!!!” Germany had already surrendered when you were busy nuking those Japanese families.
–WW stands for World War. Japan was part of it. Again sorry about that education of yours.
SMS texting in America? Please. Why this guy would say something so ignorant is about as ignorant as posting an entire story about how ignorant people post prognostications and then prognosticate themselves.
