Apple today released “Time Machine and AirPort Updates v1.0” which is recommended for all users and includes compatibility improvements for using Time Machine with Time Capsule, as well as AirPort driver fixes.
[UPDATE: 8:29pm EDT: Apple firmware update enables wireless Time Machine backup via Airport Extreme Base Station]
“Time Machine and AirPort Updates v1.0” is available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer.
It requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 Client only.
More info and download link (10.4MB) here.
Heathrow is now snappier!
Does it make it possible to use an external hard disk connected to AirPort Extreme in Time Machine?
As a piece of advice, if you have a current generation AEBS, install this and then wind up the multicast rate.
Combined with Safari 3.1, the word ‘snappy’ barely seems adequate even in my block where I can detect between six to eight other wireless networks.
Also, I’m running an old PowerBook that isn’t even N and I’m truly stunned.
Does anyone else have issues seeing airport extreme from leopard machines?
For those of you wondering, this update does NOT fix the Time Machine/AEBS bug. In my opinion, this is very poor of Apple. I have just disconnected my AEBS and put it on ebay. I don’t think Apple intends to fix it, as they have come out with TimeMachine.
It will be a LONG time before I run out and buy the latest anything from them.
I was hoping that would be fixed finally.
Rob, the functionality that you seek will come on the form of a firmware update, not a software patch.
@Mac-nugget – I realize that. But is has just gone on far too long. There are other solutions out there that work right now.
Rob,
This does come with a firmware update: have you gone into the Airport utility, selected your AEBS and then elected to upgrade to 7.3.1??
Is this the ‘Rush Limbaugh’ fix? Or are we going to have to wait a bit more for that…?
@MCCFR – Yeah, updated the firmware. Nothing. I am just perplexed that second-rate companies can get this type of thing to work, and Apple cannot…
Wow, the bustles in my hedgerow are now gone!
Rob,
In peace, could you just enumerate the companies that have come up with a Time Machine & NAS backup solution as I have customers who would dearly love to get their hands on it.
Updated the firmware, reconnected my airport disk and it now shows up in time machine!
I’m getting better wireless reception on this iBook G4 after the update. Can’t wait to see how my PowerBook G4 does, which has had terrible reception.
This absolutely does fix the Airport Extreme to allow Time Machine backups to an Airport Disk. I am backing my iMac up over the network right now. You have to install the firmware update as well as the software. Way to go Apple!
Man, Apple needs to slow down a bit. I’m spending way too much money on these things. Now I want to buy a 2TB external drive for my AEBS. LOL
If you don’t see it in Time Machine, you’ll need to open the window for your HD, then click on the Airport disk icon in the shared section on the left sidebar. Then click on the icon to the right so it will mount on the desktop. Then time Machine prefs will pick it up.
Woo Hoo the backup on AirDisk workd now.. Yeah
I cant see my HD either… u say to click the icon to the right, but this is to eject the disk not mount?… where do u go to mount?
@Tommyr,
“Wow, the bustles in my hedgerow are now gone!”
And it’s a spring clean for the may queen.
“And it’s a spring clean for the may queen.”
And as we whine on brown commodes

I prefer CCR’s “There’s a Bathroom on the Right”.
