Beleaguered Gateway is attempting to rip-off the Apple iMac yet again.
For lovers of OS-limited, all-in-one, large-chinned knockoffs of Apple products, MacNN reports that the “exact launch date for the One is uncertain, but Gateway indicates a launch soon with two retail models and a single online-only version. The retail line starts at $1,300 with a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, and Intel X3100 graphics; a high-end model boosts speed to 2GHz, memory to 3GB, hard disk space to 500GB, and adds Mobility Radeon HD 2600 dedicated video for its higher $1,800 price tag… The online model sits in between the two store models with the same hardware as the base PC save for a 400GB hard drive and Radeon HD 2600 chipset. It should be available for $1,500.”

At least they do ship with a decent amount of RAM. Is this because it can’t be upgraded? Apple should get a clue as regards memory and stop gouging for memory upgrades – come on $850 for 4GB – that’s about a 150% markup over Crucial.

The eMachines “One” will the their beige tower box with the side panel replaced with a 15 inch 4:3 LCD Screen. It will also be “wall mountable”. Much lower cost, from the desing savings and parts sharing. Of course it will be running Vista (home basic) and have a Pentium 4 processor.
BUT IT WILL BE AN ALL-IN-ONE at less than half the cost of an expensive iMac!

Now now, lets be fair. When the iLamp came out everyone said the same thing, and I never saw one fall over. I think the monitor falling over is really the last worry on Gateway’s mind right now. The company is now worth $702 million, which is probably what Apple retail would call a “lunch rush”.

Gateway really did their product research well. You can’t even easily pick this thing up to toss it out the window when it blue screens. It looks to be designed to sit there on your desk and grow roots.

The fact that you cant alter the angle of the screen is a serious design flaw, and one that would have never got off the drawing board at Apple.
It always amazes me what crappy decisions are made jsut before a product goes on the production line, that thing isnt safe.

Without the foot/log, it doesn’t much look like an iMac to me.
At last, decent competition for the iMac. Now Windows users do not have to feel inferior. If you believe this statement, I have a Compaq laptop with Windows ME I will sell you cheap.
Looks like the only reason it has that chin is because they didn’t put the cd drive behind the screen like on the iMac. I wouldn’t say its hideous but the iMac is way better. You do have to congratulate them for giving it an actual name instead of some long hard to remember number. Thats rare in the PC world.

It’s not that bad, but for the Price, the iMac is the Way to Go in cost, performance, and OS Compatability.
This is in no way whasoever a knock-off of the iMac! It is the next evolutionary step of the iMac! A far superior form factor!

As I said yesterday, everybody is now forced to compete with Apple on Apple’s home court, and we all know that Apple’s home court advantage is ease-of-use and ELEGANT DESIGN.
Who cares how “cool” (I use the term in jest) they make ANY PC look if it can only run XP or Vista? Badly, I might add.
The components and specs are secondary; can I do what I bought this MF’er for? That’s what counts, and the OS dictates that experience.
Gateway, like Dell, Compaq, IBM, Packard Bell, and all the commodity box proliferators, you had your fun in the sun, it’s time to run, ’cause you’re now DONE. Hasta la vista (pardon the pun), baby. And M$, a special hasta la VISTA to you, too.

Wow, decent competition for the iMac. Macs don’t nearly compare it terms of sales to pc’s.
So how does that take the air in. Hot air goes up and in sauna the air flows through the heater, I’d say, pretty fast.
iMac has really clean and quiet solution for the cooling: cross-drilled aluminium plate in the bottom and air vent on upper back panel. I don’t see the air flow system on the Gateway One.
Have you SEEN the Apple Commercials? You have to use a lotta floor wax to get reflections that shiny.

I’ve looked pretty hard and don’t see the Apple solution on it’s picture either…. hmm… have you considered a rear bottom inlet and a top outlet as well for the Gateway that doesn’t show up on the picture.
I don’t think you put as much thought into the cooling issue as I’m sure that Gateway has. They would have determined heating issues which you imply well before product release.
I don’t like the design either, but my reasons are due to qualities that I can see, rather than things that you assume to be problems.
For all those that think the iMAc is unique, it has to be said, that JApan has had various makers of alll-in one PCs with the computer on the back for some time. Apple copied these designs and made them better… but Sony did NOT copy Apple, they merely capitalized on the popularity Apple helped to spawn. (outside JApan)

Looks like a little flap comes out from the back to stop (or delay) it falling over. Obviously an after thought somewhat like the eyebrows they had to stick on the Concordski when they realised that their copy didn’t actually fly very well.

I honestly don’t see how this is a rip off of the iMac. Sure it an all in one, but apple does not own the all in one category. The gateway looks nothing like the iMac.
