“Brace for more disappointments ahead in the Apple iPhone saga,” Scott Moritz writes for TheStreet.com. “Fans have been dreaming of a 3G Christmas. But observers are saying Apple probably won’t be offering the faster wireless version of the iPhone this year. ‘I don’t think we’ll see it until the first or second quarter of next year,’ IAG Research’s Roger Entner says of the third-generation wireless iPhone, which would provide speedier Web access than current versions.”
MacDailyNews Take: We already have speedier Web access than the rather slow 3G. It’s called Wi-Fi connected to cable, dsl, and even speedier connections. It’s built into every iPhone, but universally ignored by those who push anti-Apple agendas. All of these people clamoring for 3G are going to be mighty surprised when they see that web pages still don’t instantly appear.
Moritz continues, “CEO Steve Jobs gave a presentation Wednesday announcing, among other things, that the company was killing the 4-gigabyte iPhone and slashing $200 off the price of the remaining 8-gigabyte phone. The decision to drop half the iPhone lineup validates rumors reported July 31 by TheStreet.com that Apple was cutting production in half.”
MacDailyNews Take: Could Moritz really be that stupid and still be able to hold a job, even if it is just as Wolverton’s replacement with TheStreet.com? Obviously, cutting the 4GB model does not preclude Apple from doubling, tripling, or further increasing 8GB iPhone production.
Mortiz continues, “Apple says it is on track to hit its 1 million units sold goal this month, a respectably strong performance for a new device that carried a $600 price tag. But that means Apple so far has failed to sell out the 1 million phones it was prepared to supply in the first week of its introduction — signaling to industry experts that there was a limited demand for the ‘revolutionary’ new device.”
MacDailyNews Take: Another fantasy. Apple never said how many iPhones they were prepared to supply in the first week. All Apple has ever said was 1 million iPhones sold by end of September 2007 (which they accomplished yesterday) and 10 million iPhones sold in calendar 2008. Mortiz seems to be doing the usual: confusing analysts’ pie-in-the-sky and usually baseless estimates with Apple’s actual figures to arrive at some imaginary “disappointment.”

MacDailyNews Take: What, if anything, do you think is in it for TheStreet.com to hop, skip, and jump across the line between reality and fantasy in order to try to talk down Apple? Apple must have secretly added olfactory capability to Safari Beta because something about TheStreet.com sure smells fishy.
I heard that they built the 4 GB iPhone factory on the site of an ancient Indian burial ground.

Moritz is now officially in the batshit-crazy, Enderle-class list of analysts.
@ Follower: Thus the need for the virgin sacrifices!
anti-Apple?!
Holy you people are sensitive or maybe suffering from a lack of self esteem. Because he didn’t write a lavishly pro-Apple article he’s therefore anti-Apple. Maybe, just maybe, that’s how he sees it. Maybe he doesn’t give a fig one way or another about Apple.
It’s true what they say about those who dish it out…they can’t take it. You make ridiculous comments slamming Microsoft in every way imaginable, most of them only half true at best and then rag on someone because they may hot have it right. When you guys start getting your facts straight then maybe you’ll have the right to criticize.
I don’t see that happening any time soon at MDN, or maybe you’re just fishing for comments and clicks like John Dvorak and most of the other hacks out there.
Maybe I should think before I click to come to this site.
Macdailynews you are way off mark with 3G specifically HSDPA. It is here in Dublin and it works and it is fast.
WiFi is limited, 100m around a base station, come on, you can’t compare existing WiFi with the the freedom to be on a train and surfing the web at 3.6Mbs (ok assuming there are sufficient cells on the route).
Take off the blinkers and smell the tea. Once you experience the freedom of HSDPA, you’ll know you were writing tripe.
“Apple so far has failed to sell out the 1 million phones it was prepared to supply in the first week of its introduction…”
This is annoying on two levels. First, the Street created the rumor that Apple wanted to sell 1 million phones in the first week. Now they cite the rumor – that they created – as proof of the truth of the rumor. Arrrrrgh.
Second, the Street has to have an agenda for promoting the rumor since it’s so easy to disprove. How could Apple have hoped to sell 1 million phones in the first week if they were sold out after the sale of the first 300,000? Geez, those guys at Apple must be pretty dumb. “We’ve only got 300,000 phone on hand, but I sure hope we sell a million!” No one can be stupid enough to believe that. It’s clearly an attempt at FUD.
According to Rob Enderle, Principal Analist (sic!) of the Enderle Group, not only are all 4GB iPhone factories required to be demolished, but the actual planet the factories were standing on needs to be discarded as well.
I’m upset about this. I don’t want to relocate to Mars. It’s like, cold there and stuff.
Damn you, Apple! Damn you!!
MDN word “death” – like, running a good joke to death.
@Mickey Dell
If I was in charge of Apple, I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.
I am also a fuckwit.
If I were running Apple, I would milk the Macintosh for all it’s worth — and get busy on the next great thing. The PC wars are over. Done. Microsoft won a long time ago.
moritz seems to be the george bush of the tech writers; trying to make a square spin and occupy territory (tech) where he has no right to be….
@Midnight – Great; now you’re going to set off all the “which planet is better?” trolls.
lol omg stupid Mars zealot!!! Jupiter r00lz get a real planet
(And yes, I agree with the “running it to death” part. Not that that’s stopping me from posting this.)
“get a real planet”
Whew. Thanks. Now I remember why I left my wife.
It’s not about writing an anti-Apple article – it’s about writing stuff which is demonstrably ludicrous and fallacious.
Maybe you should think before writing such egregious drivel.
=:~)
Isn’t the only difference between the 4gb and the 8gb iPhone the size of the memory? Doesn’t that just depend on what size you slap into it?
So using Mortiz’ “math for dumbsh*ts”, isn’t Apple actually “increasing” production by 33%? Instead of a 4gb and an 8gb (4+8=12). Aren’t they really now making an 8gb and an 8gb (8+8=16)?
Therefore, students if you take the current production of 16 gb divided by the previous production amount of a total of 12gb, then you get 1.33333, which translates into a 33.333% increase in production.
“10 million iPhones sold in calendar 2008.”
Let’s get it right.
Apple said it’s goal was to sell 10 million phones by the end of 2008, meaning from launch date, June 29, 2007 to December 31, 2008, a total of 18 months, NOT “in calendar 2008.”
The iPhone’s capabilities out weigh any negativity that can be concocted by such idiots who write for the Street.com. People who I’ve talked to that have bought the iPhone say it is one of the best devices they have ever owned period! That word of mouth is better than any advertisement and will over power any such story that can be concocted by such idiots as the Street.com.
One million achieved and counted Street.com, you lose!!!!
Itʻs obvious that theStreet.com is manipulating stocks. namely Apple. Cramer himself called Apple the buy of the year.
Anyway, if uʻr confident itʻll go to 200, then buy the stock. However, stock options. careful. wait for the sure return come MacWorld.
“It’s a well known fact that when a factory stops producing one thing it can never be repurposed for something else. The 4GB factories will be closed down and left empty for the rest of time. How stupid.”
All of the iPhones memory is contained on a single chip, and the memory chip used in the 4GB version is exactly the same size and shape as the 8GB version. The iPhone take-apart photos confirm this fact. All the factory that assembles the logic board needs to do is switch one chip reel for another – hardly what Moritz calls “repurposing”.
This is also the reason a 16GB iPhone will not be available until either a new version of the logic board has been designed to accommodate two 8GB chips or 16GB can be fitted into the same chip package as an 8.
Moritz is a moron who in his rush to slam Apple, can’t be bothered to do the slightest bit of research.
“I’m sorry, you’re wrong. There’s a HUGE difference between 4gb and 8gb. The 8gb is twice as big. It’s actually cheaper to tear down the factory and build a new one than to try to retrofit the factory to build 8gb.”
Sarcasm aside, one of the things chip manufacturers do to increase chip yields is to disable logic banks on a chip that does not pass full certification tests. It’s quite possible that the 8GB and 4GB chip are exactly the same, except that the 4GB version had half it’s memory banks disabled in order to pass certification. This may be the reason that the memory chip in Apple’s iPhone is a single package and not two.
Sadly, there is no way to enable the memory banks of a chip that has been crippled in this manner.
However, Moritz’s claim that iPhone factories will have to be shut down because of the discontinuation of the 4GB models is so ridiculous that you have to wonder if he is trying to look like an ignorant buffoon on purpose, or its just a happy coincidence.
I think it’s pretty funny that this analyst is still pulling out this myth that Apple was prepared to sell 1 million iPhones during the first weekend, when it was well publicized that most Apple and AT&T;stores sold out, at least briefly, of their iPhone supply during the first week and that sales figures announced were nowhere near 1 million.
So how come Apple was “prepared” for 1 million iPhone sales, but wasn’t so prepared as to have actually manufactured 1 million iPhones?
Must be fuzzy math.
“It’s a well known fact that when a factory stops producing one thing it can never be repurposed for something else. The 4GB factories will be closed down and left empty for the rest of time. How stupid.”
Someone has no F’n clue about factory production…
This has to be one of the most baseless and stupid comments I have ever seen written in english!
Never be “repurposed” for something else… someone is smoking crack – There is not a factory I know of that cannot change tooling in a matter of DAYS OR LESS!
Does fallacious mean blow joby?
This is for the dipshit day traders. Nothing more, nothing less. It could be argued he has no clue what Apple actually does: he just publishes lie upon lie to help with stock manipulation. That’s it. Nobody talks trash about Microsoft in this way because the plain truth is that they mean nothing. Their stock is going nowhere, and their product announcements are too little to late, or don’t ever actually materialize.
While it is nice to see people realize Microsoft is a dinosaur that is not yet aware it is dead, the people who get this happen to be stock manipulators out to make a buck. And so we have to put up with little men like Mortiz using disinformation to please his stock manipulation masters.
Mortiz = ¢rack#ead
wotta loser.

You have to be very suspicious of a so-called ‘journalist’ who refuses to cite his sources — especially on the back of so many other pseudo-quotes and incorrect attributions. It would seem that his sources are so secret, he can’t identify a single one:
“Apple will not be able to reward loyal holdouts who had been waiting for a full-speed version of the iPhone this year, say observers.”
“But without a 3G iPhone to fit that story line, some investors and industry watchers are worried…”
“”They expected, internally, higher sales than they have seen for the iPhone,” says one industry strategist.”
“The failure of the iPhone to sell out early in its run is “an unpleasant shock” for management, says one industry source.”
“And though three wireless partners are close to signing on, the absence of a 3G phone,” says one Apple investor…”
