RUMOR: Apple iPod’s to include ‘buy-now’ capability

“Apple is expected to launch a new range of iPods this week designed to receive digital radio,” Iain Thomson reports for vnunet.

“A reliable industry insider has told vnunet.com that the announcement will include plans to bring digital radio to the iPod along with an option to buy music using the device,” Thomson reports.

“The source said that the new iPods will be able to receive digital radio, and will include a ‘buy-now’ function to allow the user to download and buy tracks as they are being played,” Thomson reports.

“Other rumors about the new iPod line suggest the inclusion of a full touch-screen that does away with hardware buttons, and a new version of the iPod Nano that can handle video,” Thomson reports.

MacDailyNews Note: We reported a rumor we’d received last Wednesday, “Apple will debut ‘wireless-capable iPods’ next Wednesday along with ‘wireless iTunes Store sales, ‘enabling users to buy content ‘directly from iPod, iPhone,’ a single source often familiar with Apple’s digital content plans tells MacDailyNews. The ‘new iPods will definitely be Mac OS X-based,’ according to the source. ‘Prepare to be stunned [with] iPod’s new capabilities.'”

  1. The buy now would be convenient for impulse buying over the air. Scary to think about on edge if the capability comes to iPhone as well.

This, of course, would bring up the question as to whether or not the tracks “bought” on the iPod (iPhone?) would be available for transfer into your iTunes library.

This would make sense and some kind of DRM/watermark would distinguish a purchased track. But, correct me if I’m wrong, but if I xfer a song collection to my iPod from someone else’s library I can’t just take it home and dump it back into mine without addt’l software/hacking.

Tracks “bought” on the iPod that were then “stuck” on there would be the epitome of a “closed” system.

MDN: without. As in, without the ability to transfer these purchased tracks it would be quite a waste.

  2. Uhhh, Purchased tracks have synced both ways with your iTunes Library for awhile now. Try loading a purchased track on your iPod, delete it on your machine (or at least move it somewhere), then re-sync. It will ask if you want to sync the purchased song back to the computer.

  3. The digital radio idea is rubbish. – Not Going to happen.
Different countries use different Digital Radio standards and Apple wouldn’t get involved in this kind of mess. Also the infrastructure needed to support the “buy it now” option seems like more trouble than its worth.

The only Buy It Now option I need is the “One Click Ordering” which I activated on my Apple account yesterday. If the new Ipod comes out with a bigger screen then I’m buying one with one click. Thats all I need.

  4. Flash based iPods with iTMS built in for direct download over WiFi combined with a hard drive for auto backup and WiFi connectabilty, 5.1/stereo out.

    Something like a iPod Stereo.

It would bypass the computer, for those who loath computers.

If they really stun the industry, NBC might come crawling back on their knees.

  5. “”The source said that the new iPods will be able to receive digital radio, and will include a ‘buy-now’ function to allow the user to download and buy tracks as they are being played,” “

I posted this very idea on this website over 2 years ago. Does it make me a genius? Maybe. I’m just glad that it looks like it may come true.

  6. In Denmark Digital radio started of as a smart new way to listen to radio, but now no one uses it, and it’s basicly crap.

Don’t know if it’s the same in the US, but anyhow this feature will NOT be popular here.

  7. Here we go with more stock manipulating rumors and MDN just jumps right in and helps it along.
If I want rumors, I’ll go to appleinsider or thinksecret or any number of other rumor sites.
MDN has the word ‘news’ in the URL. You’d think it would leave the rumors to some other site.

  8. @ As far as sync:

Uhh, I guess you missed the TRANSFER PURCHASED TRACKS FROM IPOD feature that was added back in iTunes 7.0 (or was it earlier? I forget). It would be quite easy to transfer purchased content from an iPod / iPhone to a computer.

  9. @ mdn gets worse every day:

7.6.1? you obviously don’t remember 7.5. or 10.0. those were masterpieces! and whatever happened to the apple ii? bring it back mr. jobs! how about 5.25″ diskettes? or dvd-ram? i want it all to work with my powermac 6200, the best computer apple ever built.

  10. Apple’s stock is sure going to take a beating once it turns out the big announcement is that fifth generation iPods will be available in multiple colors and the nano will have a new 32GB model for $325, and that’s about it.

Get ready for falling share prices when this does-everything OS X digital radio, wifi, touch screen, high capacity NAND flash piece of imagination doesn’t appear.

Where’ve you been? The iPod has been able to do this for quite a while now!
