  1. “……Why on earth can’t apple put out a 17″ iMac for $999?????”

    —————–

Because they’ve just released a 20″ iMac for $1049 (with education discount.)

I realize students are usually on a budget, but if they’d be willing to spend $999 on a 17″ iMac, they’d be foolish not to spend the extra $50 for the 20″.

  2. What a letdown! This is what I’ve been waiting so long for? They made the iMacs butt-ugly and didn’t even include a free upgrade to Leopard? I’ve ready most of the posts, and hardly anyone sees this as an improvement. One things for sure, Ives will not have to worry about adding any industrial design awards for this round of blah, uninspired crap. The white is so much nicer. Apple is going to be crucified in the press for this one. Yuck! Now what the hell are my choices? I’m still getting one, but I’m sorely disappointed on so many levels. The iPhone clearly pulled down Apple to mediocrity. This lack of focus and priority will be felt for years to come. I’m tempted to wait for the next big industrial design shift, because this one make me want to hurl!

“Did anyone see the picture on the apple website comparing the imac to a dell? Nice comparison!”

Yes!!! Did you see all the stupid cables on the Dell!!! Power cord, ethernet, usb, keyboard, mouse. So UGLY!!!!

And compare to the simplicity of iMac. It’s so much more beautiful when you don’t need a single cable! I can’t really see folk buying anything with cables after seeing the new iMac. Dell is going to hang itself in its power cord, they will never catch apple’s lead in wireless power transfer technology.

  4. It’s funny you know.. I seem to remember just about as many whiny self-important BS comments made about the G5 iMac when it was first released.

3 years or so from now, when Apple re-designs the iMac again, no doubt all of you silly dismissive people who seem to lack any real vision will be back here, spewing the same crap

“Oh this is not better than what we had… boo-hoo I recoil in terror at the thought of change”

Seriously.. deal with it. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.. there will be plenty of people who do.

And FYI – the decision to go glossy on the iMac screen is directly related to the amount of people opting for said feature on their laptops. It is clearly favored by the majority, and is likely here to stay.

  5. You UK people email us we can get you discounts on apple products in the UK. Email us here or go to our website. http://onestopappleshop.com
I personally like the new design. I would have liked to see a 17in iMac for $799 or something but last i heard the 17in were not selling that well. Most people want the 20in or 24n display. Still would be nice bring in the people who cant afford $1000. But those people who cant afford that can buy a used 17in imac for less.

I agree that everytime apple comes out with a new product someone wines and complains. They wont be happy with anything. Also to the person who said a $599 imac. GET REAL. APple spends way to much money in R&D on these things. Plus what Pc can you get really get for $599? please show us all. You have to remeber those cheap crap at wal mart for $400 wont last you more then a year. PLus that is not anywhere near the processor and speed the imac has. Also then remember you need to get virus protection, spyware, photo, movie, web and music software to compete with ilife, then you might think about a web cam since the imac has a built in one. You will spend $1000 easy.

I am so tired of this Apple computers are to expensive. They are no more then any other. Sure at face value but then with Pcs by the time you add all the extra software you need to keep it running you get into some expensive stuff.

  6. Pleased to see Steve announcing that the new iMacs will be made from ‘professional-grade aluminium’. (That amateur stuff is so unreliable!)

As a professional-grade advertising copywriter this sounds like the kind of terminology certain clients love – the kind who think their consumers are all dopes who’ll swallow any kind of verbal diahorrea as long as its spewing from the right anus.

  7. Early observations of my new iMac:

    New imovie is fantasic!!!
Keyboard is great. Very solid. Thought it might be difficult to use, but it is not.
Top of the machine gets a little hot.
Could do without the black frame around the screen, athough I like that you can’t see the isight camera. It also seems to make the screen look brighter.
Glass screen is very clear. Photos look super.

  8. All you people bitching about the glossy screen and new keyboard should get your ass to a store and try them out – I have to tell you these things are great – especially that 24″ it looks like you are looking out a window – just a big screen no computer…. SWEET

I have a Macbook Pro with a glossy screen and I will never go back to a matte screen again – I would rather have a little glare then an all out blasting of sun on a matte screen – My glossy is way better in bright light than my old matte screen was…

  9. “Having the black edge makes the desktop look like its floating in space. Kinda coincidental that Leopard will be promoting features Time Machine and Spaces….”

And that most Mac lovers are space cadets.
