Have any of you folks even tried a glossy screen before you have an opinion of it? I use my Macbook indoors and love it…maybe outdoors is an issue for some. I don’t really notice any major difference than it with my old Lombard Powerbook that is still running, except for the brightness. The glossy part make no difference to me. No, I am not a pro photographer, and if you are, you need a Cinema display…you are only as good as your tools, so quit complaining about the consumer iMac glossy screen and be happy it displays near HD resolution.
@ Majikthize
Your clearly a very crap photographer!!
If you can not afford a top of the line tower and screen then give up your day job and find another career. You must really sux if you can not justify the expense.
I’m surprised they have these ATI graphics cards. I assumed they would have went with nVidia’s stuff – like the 8600GT GO in the top model. Oh well, they look nice. Just have to wait to see how well they perform. Price and other upgrades are sweet. And with all of the software upgrades Apple has done, I don’t think anyone has a good reason to be complaining. Well, except for that imbecile ‘me’. That clown obviously has never even used a Mac and is condemned to suffer a lingering death using MicroSoft products – which he probably gets free for touting the MS party line. What a pathetic dipshit.
I work in a high school that has macs. All the kids say they would love to buy a mac, but they are just too expensive. So what happens today?? They put the iMac even further out of reach for most people.
Why on earth can’t apple put out a 17″ iMac for $999????? This totally screws up my budget for the next school year.
Also, they are offering much smaller discounts to schools on these new models. Apple is straying from their education base. That’s too bad.
I GOT ONE….first one in fact in the Apple store nearby. Manager had to pull it out of the back room. Months of waiting finally over.
“As such, things like sleek design and a contrast-enhancing display are exactly the sorts of things that the AVERAGE computer user loves. “
Actually Macs are specifically targeted at the below average computer user.
@fred
I also wonder??, why they didn’t keep an under $1,000 iMac 17″
we have several 17″ in our hotel lobby’s for people to check their emails.
“I also wonder??, why they didn’t keep an under $1,000 iMac 17”
Better still, produce an under $500 17″ like the rest of the PC world.
1 – I like the new iMAC.
2 – I like the keyboard – the look anyways
3 – Mighty mouse… should have been updated to made silver
4 – FrontRow remote… should have been spray painted silver too
5 – Yes – iMAC can hookup second monitor – love it!
6 – Better memory expandablity – great – good move.
7 – 24″ DuoCore Extreme… for same price as before – awesome
8 – I will buy the 24″ extreme… WISHED it to be Quad Proc.

Does anyone know what this Difference is with DuoCore 2 Extreme and DuoCore 2… in terms of Speed boost.
It would help me decide FASTER…. hahahahah
Still wish it were Quad Core.
thx j
GLASS screen does help in deepening blacks…
it was done to be more environmental friendly — to comply with a GREENER computer response… good going APPLE!!!!
As for touch screen… maybe soon… but for now…. not in the playing cards.
ABC
Waiting for a hands-on review. (MW: truth.) Also waiting for speed comparisons.
This baby will fly off the shelves, especially the big momma.
>>”Our new design features the innovative use of materials, including professional-grade aluminum and glass, that are highly recyclable.”
Yep, had the feeling this was going to be the case.
>>”I think this is one of those “the pictures don’t do it justice.” I’ll bet that most of you saying you hate the looks will think different when you see it up close and personal. This iMac doesn’t have the cutesy look of previous versions. This is sveldt and sophisticated.”
I agree. I’m really linking what I see. I think the black bezel looks cool. Definitely have to see one of these in person. I’m a little worried about the feel of the keyboard, but I haven’t tried it yet. Doesn’t matter anyway as I have 2 spare Apple Pro’s (the older, better tactile feeling ones). I’ll reserve judgement on the glass screen until I see it. Can’t wait to check one out!
Pete,
I for one looooove glossy screens! I love this Macbook’s glossy screen. I love the enhaced clarity of glossy instead of the slightly muted fuzzy look of matte screens. I love their superior color accuracy, etc. I also like the black bezel too. The new iMac is the sickest consumer pc on the planet. I planned on upgradding my G4 Dual 553 PowerMac to a loaded 24″ iMac as soon as Leopard is included.
By the way pseudo-pros’s out there the iMac is not a Pro level machine if you want Pro level you have to cough up the bucks and buy a MacPro. Besides can’t you “Pros” use the purchase a business decuction and depreciate it out over 1/2 a decade on your taxes. If you want a Pro level machine pay the price and get it…..it’s worth it. The new iMac more than meets my needs. I can tell you all this a co-worker of mine is ordering one this Friday on my recommendation, my best friend is ordering a BTO model from Apple this week on my reccomendation. Oh, and I am an IT pro (Windows IT) and the new iMac more than meets my personal computing needs.
^^^ If all goes well, after a point or 2 release in Leopard, I’ll be buying….
Has anyone heard which type of LCD backlight are in these new models?
I’ll make my mind up when I see it in the flesh in an Apple store. Things always look totally different than crappy web pics. Knowing Apple it will look gorgeous.
It’s just a curiousity for me as I use a Pmac and a Powerbook 12″ for travel. Both PPC and also run crappy VPC. Both are fantastic, and I won’t upgrade for a number of years = total FUD when people say they need but can’t afford a Pmac. The TCO over the tremendous time you can use one before upgrading is REALLY low.
As many have commented, the iMac is for high volume, popular consumption, and by definition cannot meet all your needs. And by definition, it has many leading popular features, including glossy displays – get over trolls, that’s the popular fashion. And the iMac by definition, is the ultimate in popular desktopk fashion.
Nothing else can compete with OSX. Apple leads the pack “by a country mile” (a long way) as we say in Aus (It’s the software, stupid!),
And for those of us who don’t want an all-in-one system, we continue to wait for either a Mac prosumer tower or an updated Mac Pro with a decent video card selection and better hard drive options along with cheaper memory.
Come on Apple. Give us something.
the mouse still sucks and the keyboard is worse for anyone that types a lot..
so what, it’s brushed metal now…the glossy screen is garbage
bleh…still like my C2D 2.0GHz iMac better
I wanted touchscreen! Why drop the 17 inch model? I’m not sure about the black back, it might look nicer in white. Still, it’s very nice, I like the idea of the smooth glass to cover the aluminium as I hate the feel of aluminium.
Did anyone see the picture on the apple website comparing the imac to a dell? Nice comparison! hey a chrome iMac would be nice. I think to make touchscreen comfortable for desktops it would have to be a design like the old G4 imacs, except the display could slide in and out so you wouldn’t have to reach too far.
“MDN Magic Word” is average, like dell’s designs.
Quoting from Jobs, “These things are ugggggglllyy!!”
Hate that stupid black rim around the screen. Sure it looks cool when it’s off as it makes you think the screen is huge. But when it’s on, it serves no purpose at all.
Where’s 17inch? I don’t wanna fulfill my desk with 15″ laptop, 23″ monitor, and another 20″ iMac. what if I just wanth a 17″ iMac?
And why all glossy? Screw Jobs, that looks cheap!
Ok, great hardware inside, but dissapointing enclosure. It’s becoming like Alienware marsjupitersaturn-098823xyz.
Regarding the black edge:
I think its there to disguise just how much of the chin is really there. If you look at size of the display against how far the bottom of the chin is, the ratio looks almost the same as the pervious iMac. i think its a clever way of keeping the eyes focused on the screen. Sort of reminds me of the Nokia 6630 phone which has a huge black area around the screen, to give the illusion the screen is larger.
Not that I’m complaining… the more I look at it, the more I like it.
Glossy screen?
next.
Just another observation:
Having the black edge makes the desktop look like its floating in space. Kinda coincidental that Leopard will be promoting features Time Machine and Spaces….
My husband (the non-computer geek) actually suggested we might want to upgrade the iMac, which we just bought in March of 2006. I suggested we wait till at least after MacWorld next year. For him to suggest a new machine is an indication of this new model’s “cool” factor…
