Apple adds Gigabit Ethernet support to Airport Extreme

Apple today bumped up Airport Extreme Base Station to feature one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port for connecting a DSL or cable modem and three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for connecting computers or network devices.

Previously, the Airport Extreme Base Station- which began shipping in February 2007 – featured one 10/100Base-T WAN port and three 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN ports.

The price, US$179, remains unchanged.

  1. YAY!!!!
MY Linksys can’t seem to handle wireless anymore, so I was going to buy an AEBS, so this is fantastic news! Yeah, was a mystery why they rolled out Macs with Gb ethernet, but they kept the AWBS still on 100Mb. Anyways, thats history now. Glad I get to buy noe that’s future-proof!

  2. Actually, before commenting that I bought my Airport Extreme Base Station two months too soon, I should have considered what I have attached to the wired ports… an old iMac with 100 Base-T and a broadband ‘net connection that won’t come close to max’ing out 100 Base-T anytime soon. All other newer computers (current and probably future) use the wireless connection, and there’s no improvement there. So this is no big deal for me after all.

My Linksys was in the process of crapping out. I have to unplug it and replug it once a week in order to connect. I was going today to buy the new Apple extreme but I will wait a little bit longer.

    Phew!

  4. check the specs on the new mac mini. It is not WiFi “N” capable. I know, sucks. I thought it was originally too because of the core 2 duo chipset, but I guess not.

Oh, and I too already bought an airport extreme. I really wanted that gigabit…..I hate it when they do this.
