iPhone to dominate Apple’s Q3 07 conference call

“While robust Mac sales are likely to drive Apple to yet another solid quarter, it will be discussion of iPhone metrics that dominate the firm’s fiscal third quarter conference call next week, according to Piper Jaffray… analyst Gene Munster,” Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.

“Munster said iPhone revenue will not be material to the company’s third quarter earnings, as the handset went on sale with only two days left in the quarter. Even if Apple managed to sell half a million units in that time, it would only account for an additional $12 million in immediately recognizable revenue due to the company’s plan to defer its iPhone accounting over a 24 month period, he explained,” Lane reports.

“Still, the analyst expects the focus of the company’s quarterly call to be weighted heavily towards discussion of the handset’s metrics. Like it does with Macs and iPods, Apple will be breaking out iPhone sales into a distinct data category. This means it will report precisely how many iPhone units it sells each quarter, beginning with the first two days of sales at the end of its third fiscal quarter ended June 30th,” Lane reports.

  1. On Purchasing apple stock…..

    People have said:

    “I wish I bought Apple at $50…….”
    then went on to say

    “I wish I bought Apple at $75…..”

    then went on to say

    “I wish I bought Apple at $85…..”
    then went on to say

    “I wish I bought Apple at $95…..”
    then went on to say

    “I wish I bought Apple at $120….”

    get the picture?

  2. Well, I’m pleasantly surprised that iPhone numbers will be broken out as a separate line item as it will enable the market to identify to what extent iPhone is cannibalising iPod sales, which – of course – assumes that a $500 item is the cannibalising item at fault as opposed to the $250.00 item.

    As for the first two days, it’s a tricky one: personally, I’ll go for 400,000 units ± 3% – (180 Apple Stores x 500/day) + (1,800 AT&T x 60/day) seems a fair guess. I’ll also guess an average revenue/unit of around $570 which presumes a bias to the 8GB model. 400K x $570 = $9.5 million when divided by 24. Add in the network operators commission (400K x $60 [min] x 5%) and that’s another $1.2 million.

So $10.7 million for the quarter – not bad for two days work: even better is that iPhone results will be cumulative; by the time we reach September 2008, the results will be stellar.

  3. Hey MDN, is your website “bricked” ? Like your iPhone you whiners? Maybe if you used a web host that used Apple’s your site wouldn’t be “bricked”

    Boycott MDN’s ad links.

  4. Of topic, I know, but a couple of hours ago Apple Store (US) went off line – MacWorld UK reported it, emphasizing that it’s Tuesday!
When it came back, I couldn’t notice any difference, but then I haven’t looked at the US store for a while.
Can someone tell me what’s changed?

  5. I would love to see Apple blow the market away with a report that included the sale of one (1) million iPhone units in just two days… the cell phone industry would go nuts!

And most likely implode upon it’s self!

I know it’s wishful thinking but why not…

  6. Isn’t it already July. Weren’t M$ supposed to sell 1M Zunes by now? Haven’t heard anything about that.

Back to topic. I would imagine Apple will try to focus on other products. They do not want to speculate on the success of the iPhone too much. They are usually conservative on conference calls. I’m sure they will announced the sales figures for the first two days of iPhone sales because they will be phenomenal.

Mac sales will also be something they will want to crow about.

What I am impressed with is that Apple are keeping up with demand for the iPhone for the most part. They are so much better at preparing for new product demand than before and it means they can really take advantage of the publicity their product get on release.
