Apple iPhone to get GPS next year?

Apple Store“The next iPhone probably due out at Macworld or early spring of ’08 will incorporate a GPS receiver chip closely matching the SiRFstarIII from SiRF Technology. Even though the StarIII’s power consumption is a bit higher than Apple would like it is considered the best chip for a mobile device of this kind, having the capability to receive signals from 20 different satellites simultaneously and a super fast First Fix Time,” AppleTechNews reports.

“Because of the high expectations placed upon the iPhone, Apple is certain to use a chipset using Assisted GPS technology, which cuts down the time needed to determine a location using GPS. (A-GPS) is necessary in urban areas with tall buildings or locations with heavy tree cover,” AppleTechNews reports.

  1. I’ll drop my Treo 650 w/ bluetooth gps once the iphone has it built in…..it would be kinda cool to have steve job’s voive as the guide too……”Turn left and drive through the gates of Cupertino …”

  2. Doesn’t Google maps work with aGPS (location based services required in all American phones by the FCC)?

The iPhone will surely have aGPS. It’s certainly not as strong as a regular GPS chip but if the Google maps feature works with it, that’d be good enough for me.

  3. Any receiver that can receive from 20 GPS satellites is *WAY* over kill.

It is not physically possible to receive signals from more than 15 GPS satellites concurrently even if you’re on top of Mt. Everest, and even then the last couple satellites are sporatic. In order to receive from more than 15 you need to be in orbit — and I think the cell phone coverage out there is non existent.

Receiving signals from more than 8 satellites concurrently gives you no measurable increase in accuracy — using the civilian signal. What is needed — if you need sub meter accuracy — is the ability to pick up differential GPS signals. Now give me an iPhone with *that* capability (maybe even piggy backing on the FAA DGPS signals). It would truly be a major upgrade.

  4. Why do people have need to state so clearly that “they will not buy the first version”.

Is there some macho reason for this or what?

Do or don’t buy it, but don’t keep telling us how important it is for you not to buy it.

    Gawd sakes.

  5. NEXT YEAR? BULLSH*T!!!

Better be this year, like before July or else.

A device with that much capacity shouldn’t be without a GPS standard.

And a AM/FM radio wouldn’t be a bad idea niether.

GET IT RIGHT APPLE OR JUST GET OUT!!

  6. Another reason tow ait until the second version?

by then they will be talking about the third version possibilities and incorporating iSight and other yummy things. Buy now, enjoy and then buy again like we all do with technology.

Don’t wait. You will always be waiting if you rwad these sites.

  7. If you read the story, they also state that the iPhone is “$499 subsidized”. I believe both Apple and AT&T have clearly stated that iPhone is and will not be subsidized by AT&T. Draws the accuracy of the article into question.

  8. i’m resting my decision of buying an iphone on the possible omission of ichat/instant messaging. if the 1st gen iphone doesn’t have that, i won’t get one. it sucks, i’ve planned on buying one since january, but just realized last week that it might not have IM capabilities…..

the icat-formatted SMS tricked me into thinking it has IM

  9. It’s really boring listening to the kids winge and complain about the features it doesn’t have. Apple is NOT Microsoft. Apple knows it’s not about putting as many features into something that counts, it’s putting the right features in that does.

I’ve owned at least 10 mobile phones and they all suck. I will ceratinly be getting an iPhone as soon as it’s available in Australia and changing phone companies if necessary. Then I’ll buy gen 2, gen 3 etc. And don’t forget that it will get continual software upgrades throught the iTunes stores over time as well.

We do not need military GPS. If the article is true that it will have one of these GPS chips in it, then you can be sure that Apple will create or work with someone to provide a wonderful GPS software solution on the iPhone to go with it.

    Bring it on. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
