Apple today released iTunes 7.1 which supports a new full screen Cover Flow and improved sorting options to let you decide how iTunes should sort your favorite artists, albums, and songs.
iTunes 7.1 is available via Software Update and also as standalone installers:
• iTunes 7.1 for Mac (28MB): System Requirements: Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later
• iTunes 7.1 for Windows (36.1MB): System Requirements: Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4
Vista support is conspicuously absent.

@ Rayzor
Agreed – the option to separate movies into genres (or other categories) is sorely needed.
If you go into iTunes Preferences under the Parental tab, you’ll see a Ratings For: selector.
Australia, Canada (yay!), Ireland, New Zealand, UK, and US.
Looks like we’ll be getting some more TV shows and movies in more countries soon! Maybe tomorrow?
Side note: damn, what a hog! Using CoverFlow I topped over 500 MB for iTunes. That’s just insane…
AppleTV preferences are nice, but did anyone notice that Quicktime includes an export to AppleTV setting? Unfortunately, the options button is greyed out, so there is just the one setting. Not sure how to tell what is outputs as. Interesting nonetheless.
FULL SCREEN COVERFLOW IS BACK!!!!
Of course I refused to update to iTunes 7.0 because of the lack of the full screen coverflow like in the original Coverflow program.
Now I can change my computers date to the present. (the original Coverflow had a expiration date)
This coverflow is amazing. Like stated earlier, Wow is for Coverflow, not vista.
it sort of works with the remote, too. too bad you can’t get coverflow in frontrow.
Even more exciting to me than the full-screen CoverFlow (although it’s a close second!!) is the addition of the option to Sort Albums Alphabetically by Artist.
With this and the full-screen, I can finally get back to where I was with the original CoverFlow …. I had faith that Apple would get it right eventually. And now it’s all integrated into the program. Hot damn tamales!
500 MB for Coverflow doesn’t surprise me… I think it has to cache an awful lot of cover art for the display. It’s worth it though – because I really miss the experience of flipping through my music visually. That’s what made CoverFlow such a great idea – almost takes one back to the tactile album days, where you could really see the cover artwork. At least on my iMac 20″, the full screen view is bigger than a CD now. Awesome.
I don’t get this new cover flow. You can’t flip the album covers to see the tracks like on the iPhone? Why wouldn’t they include that crucial feature? How am I suppose to choose a song then?
@Gary
I agree, where is the ability to flip the cover art over and see the tracklisting? IMHO it was one of the best features about the iPhone. Using the new full scree coverflow, there is just no way to pick a song directly.
On the plus side, the apple remote works nicely when in coverflow mode.
<I don’t get this new cover flow. You can’t flip the album covers to see the tracks like on the iPhone? Why wouldn’t they include that crucial feature? How am I suppose to choose a song then?>
I imagine that will be a Leopard feature, Gary. Just wait ’til June.
My snappin’ gyro is snappier!
The full screen cover flow looks great and with the remote it’s the ultimate party jukebox
Will Coverflow be less RAM hungry when Leopard comes out, with core animation?? I hope so…
But then what about the poor Windows users?
Love the new Coverflow. However the new update broke the Party Shuffle feature for me. Not only does it preview many more songs than it should, it also includes videos and podcasts when it should only play music. Not good.
MW: reported. I should be doing just that to Apple.
Anyone else notice that you can now put the word “The” back in front of album names, and iTunes will not change the sorted position? (i.e. “The Lord of the Rings” is placed at the same position as “Lord of the Rings, The”)
Very nice fix……. I can only wonder why it took so long.
