Apple today introduced iPhone, combining three products – a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, searching and maps-into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting users control iPhone with just their fingers. iPhone also ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, which completely redefines what users can do on their mobile phones.
“iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the press release. “We are all born with the ultimate pointing device — our fingers — and iPhone uses them to create the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse.”
iPhone is a revolutionary new mobile phone that allows users to make calls by simply pointing at a name or number. iPhone syncs all of your contacts from your Mac, Windows PC or Internet service such as Yahoo!, so that you always have your full list of up-to-date contacts with you. In addition, you can easily construct a favorites list for your most frequently made calls, and easily merge calls together to create conference calls.
iPhone’s pioneering Visual Voicemail, an industry first, lets users look at a listing of their voicemails, decide which messages to listen to, then go directly to those messages without listening to the prior messages. Just like email, iPhone’s Visual Voicemail enables users to immediately randomly access those messages that interest them most.
iPhone includes an SMS application with a full QWERTY soft keyboard to easily send and receive SMS messages in multiple sessions. When users need to type, iPhone presents them with an elegant touch keyboard which is predictive to prevent and correct mistakes, making it much easier and more efficient to use than the small plastic keyboards on many smartphones. iPhone also includes a calendar application that allows calendars to be automatically synced with your PC or Mac.
iPhone features a 2 megapixel camera and a photo management application that is far beyond anything on a phone today. Users can browse their photo library, which can be easily synced from their PC or Mac, with just a flick of a finger and easily choose a photo for their wallpaper or to include in an email.
iPhone is a quad-band GSM phone which also features EDGE and Wi-Fi wireless technologies for data networking. Apple has chosen Cingular, the most popular carrier in the US with over 58 million subscribers, to be Apple’s exclusive carrier partner for iPhone in the US.
iPhone is a widescreen iPod with touch controls that lets music lovers “touch” their music by easily scrolling through entire lists of songs, artists, albums and playlists with just a flick of a finger. Album artwork is stunningly presented on iPhone’s large and vibrant display.
iPhone also features Cover Flow, Apple’s amazing way to browse your music library by album cover artwork, for the first time on an iPod. When navigating your music library on iPhone, you are automatically switched into Cover Flow by simply rotating iPhone into its landscape position.
iPhone’s 3.5-inch widescreen display offers the ultimate way to watch TV shows and movies on a pocketable device, with touch controls for play-pause, chapter forward-backward and volume. iPhone plays the same videos purchased from the online iTunes Store that users enjoy watching on their computers and iPods, and will soon enjoy watching on their widescreen televisions using the new Apple TV. The iTunes Store now offers over 350 television shows, over 250 feature films and over 5,000 music videos.
iPhone lets users enjoy all their iPod content, including music, audiobooks, audio podcasts, video podcasts, music videos, television shows and movies. iPhone syncs content from a user’s iTunes library on their PC or Mac, and can play any music or video content they have purchased from the online iTunes store.
iPhone features a rich HTML email client which fetches your email in the background from most POP3 or IMAP mail services and displays photos and graphics right along with the text. iPhone is fully multi-tasking, so you can be reading a web page while downloading your email in the background.
Yahoo! Mail, the world’s largest email service with over 250 million users, is offering a new free “push” IMAP email service to all iPhone users that automatically pushes new email to a user’s iPhone, and can be set up by simply entering your Yahoo! name and password. iPhone will also work with most industry standard IMAP and POP based email services, such as Microsoft Exchange, Apple .Mac Mail, AOL Mail, Google Gmail and most ISP mail services.
iPhone also features the most advanced and fun-to-use web browser on a portable device with a version of its award-winning Safari(TM) web browser for iPhone. Users can see any web page the way it was designed to be seen, and then easily zoom in to expand any section by simply tapping on iPhone’s multi- touch display with their finger. Users can surf the web from just about anywhere over Wi-Fi or EDGE, and can automatically sync their bookmarks from their Mac or Windows PC. iPhone’s Safari web browser also includes built-in Google Search and Yahoo! Search so users can instantly search for information on their iPhone just like they do on their computer.
iPhone also includes Google Maps, featuring Google’s groundbreaking maps service and iPhone’s amazing maps application, offering the best maps experience by far on any pocket device. Users can view maps, satellite images, traffic information and get directions, all from iPhone’s remarkable and easy- to-use touch interface.
iPhone employs advanced built-in sensors — an accelerometer, a proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor — that automatically enhance the user experience and extend battery life. iPhone’s built-in accelerometer detects when the user has rotated the device from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display accordingly, with users immediately seeing the entire width of a web page, or a photo in its proper landscape aspect ratio.
iPhone’s built-in proximity sensor detects when you lift iPhone to your ear and immediately turns off the display to save power and prevent inadvertent touches until iPhone is moved away. iPhone’s built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the display’s brightness to the appropriate level for the current ambient light, thereby enhancing the user experience and saving power at the same time.
iPhone will be available in the US in June 2007, Europe in late 2007, and Asia in 2008, in a 4GB model for US$499 and an 8GB model for $599, and will work with either a Mac or Windows PC. iPhone will be sold in the US through Apple’s retail and online stores, and through Cingular’s retail and online stores. Several iPhone accessories will also be available in June, including Apple’s new remarkably compact Bluetooth headset.
iPhone requires a Mac with a USB 2.0 port, Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later and iTunes 7; or a Windows PC with a USB 2.0 port and Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4), Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 2). Internet access is required and a broadband connection is recommended. Apple and Cingular will announce service plans for iPhone before it begins shipping in June.

Video of how Apple’s rumored touch-screen Tablet Mac could work – February 13, 2006
Yikes!
Beyond my wildest expectations mate!
It’s going to be a long wait til June.
Wow!!!!
I told you Apple would rock..didn’t I?…
Amazing!!!! how am i going to wait til JUNE!!!!!
Steve Jobs on CNBC “Closing Bell” today (2pm-4pm Central). Interview with him to discuss iPhone
Infinitely cooler than I could’ve ever imagined.
I’m COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY.
I just pooped a little bit
Yeah I’m on Cingular…..
I was kind of disappointed there wasn’t a widescreen iPod, though. Or that they didn’t up the Mac Mini to core 2 duos.
Great phone. Dis-heartened by the exclusivity with Cingular. I was with them for 2 years, and got sick of being treated like a second-class citizen. Been with T-Mobile since last August, and have been very happy.
*sigh*
I am a little disappointed they did not release a wide/touch screen iPod. I have no interest in getting a phone. Don’t get me wrong I am really impressed with the specs, but I just don’t want one (plus how much video can you watch with just 8GBs). I guess I have to wait until November, maybe then they will release an update video iPod.
WORST MACWORLD KEYNOTE EVER!!! It feels like Steve has cast aside the Mac! Not a mention of Leopard? iLife? New Macs? … and a name change that removes the word computer!?!?! No, ‘One more thing’?!? I guess this will no longer be ‘MacWorld’. Who cares about ANOTHER cell phone!? Steve ignores the Apple faithfull and goes the route of big corporate america. Goodbye Apple Computer, I for one will miss you
Didn’t Al Gore invent this already?
Anyone else notice there’s no Games icon anywhere, my iPod has games but this new one does’nt. What’s up with that?
Wonder what the Zune chief dood is thinking now. Hmm? Too bad Windows Mobile never worked like this.
MDNews Word : “Moment” as in “this is the moment Apple took the industry and put it on its head”
They’re going to sell millions of these things…
Problem is that a 2 year subscription to Cingular is required. Also, my biggest fear is that the phone is locked.
Zunes will be cheap on eBay this spring, as their delusional owners try to off load them, scraping every penny for iPhone.
First off the iphone looks cool! 100% Touch screen is not ideal, smudges, scratches, and no way to protect the screen. A warranty will not cover that type of damage.
Cingluar is not my choice for a provider I use Verizon due to the coverage and fast internet speed with my wireless card and my Mac Book Pro.
I don’t think Verizon will ever get this phone. So, I am sticking with my Treo 700p for now.
I was really hoping for the OS update…
AMAZING simply AMAZING not so amazing the fact that its tied to just Cingular =( I will get one eventually but not with Cingular. This phone is jaw dropping !!!!!!!!!!
Read the technical specs! camera with 2 megapixels!
The iPhone and Apple TV (once they let you burn DVD’s you purchase) are going to be amazing products.
My one question is how was today all about the Mac? I didn’t really expect a whole lot in terms of new computers, but where’s iLife 07?
June!–WTF we gotta wait til june to get the iSmudge!
Cell phone manufacturers the world over are shitting themselves right about now!!
This this ROCKS!!
MW: Things – as in, things are just getting interesting!
This is great but I would like to buy an iphone without the phone and the two-year contract, and 100GB capacity. I wonder if they will upgrade the bigger ipods to the iphone concept…
Dang … my company still requires Windows Mobile 5 compatibility — STEVE!!! PLEASE GIVE US BOOTCAMP MOBILE!!!!!
I don’t know about the “incredibly compact” bluetooth headset tho — the fairly-indredibly compact bluetooth headsets out there never stay on my head anyway. Going smaller would just mean more problems for folk like me.
This is the best “intelligent” phone ever! Period. I am saving starting right….now.
I was really looking forward to buying the new iLife 07, and iWork 07
Just ordered the new airport extreme with 802.11n – along with a new tv. Excellent new products!
I don’t get the folks who are complaining that there is not wide-screed touch-pad iPod. Isn’t that capability exactly was Jobs described in the new iPhone?
Also
What is with this Lasik ad. It appears to hover over my screen only on this site. It is bigger than my window.
MDN is getting worse each day.
Yeah…this thing is amazing!
That’s a LOT of phone! Great deal for the price. Still, I wonder if Apple will release a lower-end version later in 2007 or in 2008? I assume SJ is modeling this roll-out on the iPod, with the expensive full iPod coming first, followed later by the mini/nano, and eventually by the Shuffle. There’s no reason Apple shouldn’t eventually offer a “Shuffle” version of the iPhone, at $149 or even $99.
P.S. Is it true that the quoted prices assume a 2-year contract w/Cingular?!? I know it’s exclusive on Cingular, just wondering about the contract.
Zune Tang suffers heart failure. The Brown Brick is hereby consigned to the dunnie !!
KILLER PHONE…….killed by cingular =/
I want this so much, but cannot in good consience go back to cingular, I payed $175 to get out of that crooked mess. Ahh well one day it will be avaliable elsewhere, will just wait till then.
to bad
Botton Line – WOW!
There is now only one phone out there worth buying – even if you have to take a lone out to buy it!
From a business sense it a must have device, simply because I’m already a 100% Mac small business user!
Besides every one of clients will be after me to get one or more – guess I have to put of my new computer till later in the year!
Who know maybe by the time I get around to getting a new laptop, Apple, Inc. will have a tablet on the market – here hoping!
Give me all those iPhone features with the phone… and 60 gigs.
TRUE Video iPod is just down the road I hope.
bah! cingular?!
where’s leopard??
I for one am looking forward to getting one of these sometime after June. Fortunately, I’m with Cingular and they haven’t given me any reason why I should leave. My cell phone itself on the other hand…
MDN – you mentioned battery life for the phone. Was 5 hours “talk” time or standby time? Sorry if I missed it.
I too was a little disappointed in not discussing more about iLife, iWork, etc. However, one can’t have everything. Overall sounds like it was a great keynote. Looking forward to watching a semi-freezing / stuttering video of the keynote address tonight after work.
Regards.
I love it, but am disappointed at the release date. June?? That’s nearly half a year away… I mean, either Apple is running out of ideas or this phone is the most complicated device ever. But man, June? That still kills me. The $500 price tag doesnt justify this either. ):
WOW!
Goodbye, phone, iPod and Palm!
ENDIT:
Give me all those iPhone features WITHOUT the phone… and 60 gigs.
TRUE Video iPod is just down the road I hope.
WONDERFUL, now when can we see this pone with VERIZON !!??
Further thoughts:
Well, I am not sure what to say I think this was the most anti-Mac Keynote to date.
It was all about the multi-media and not about the core Mac users; I am not saying that the iphone and Apple TV are not nice in their own rights.
I am a computer user more then a toy user, were the Leopard OS? That was a big deal in August beating Microsoft and all the great new features like time machine and an updated Apple Mail application.
Bill Gates gave a scathing interview about how Apple will “never get it” Also if you read the iphone pages on Apple.com they even list that the iphone will sync with the PC and Mac even listing the PC first (Even alphabetically M comes before P so it was done intentionally.
Here is what I foresee happening:
March 24, 2007 “Apple, Inc.” will release the Leopard Update; it will be exactly 6 years to the date of the initial release of Mac OS X. That will keep Apple, Inc. relevant to stock holders, thru April and May, then in June they will release the iphone that will keep the stock holders happy up to August 2007 and the next conference, where we will see the screen updates to complement the New Apple TV, and a round of updates to the Laptop and Desktops, to carry us through the rest of 2007.
It’s not a bad game plan, but I do feel that the “core” Mac users have been left out in the cold, I would have been extremely happy with the Leopard release.
8 gigs just doesn’t cut it for “Real” iPod use. THIS IS NOT a Full-screen iPod.
zomg! this is what ive been waiting for!!!
now how long till it comes to australia? i’d say its a while off 🙁
Anyone remember LEOPARD?? What’s up with that?
sak pase?
I am STILL sitting in my own fecal matter. I can’t move. I don’t want to eat or anything. Think I’ll just sit here until June.
I don’t know whether to gloat or eat crow here. ThinkStupid quite clearly wasn’t even close to breaking the news on this. They’ve been pushing the “touch-screen iPod” forever, while I’ve called their predictions BS.
Well, this is a touch-screen iPod, sort of. But there’s no “virtual clickwheel”, which was part of every TS prediction. Instead, you touch and slide. And the touch functionality makes more sense as part of a phone/PDA/entertainment combo device, where keeping the screen pristine isn’t as expected, than a dedicated video player, where you’d want to keep the screen as clean as possible.
So I’m sure ThinkStupid will spin this as their prediction being right. But this was not the device they were predicting.
Wish I could afford one of these anytime soon. I know why it’s $500 – $600, but ouch! Early adopters are going to have to get this one quick so they can lower the price once the R&D has been recovered.
WOW………..only one thing that sux about it = June
In response to huh?, we are disappointed that there is no wide screen ipod WITHOUT phone, who wants to sign a 2 year contract + pay $499 for to fit just 4 movies. If you took the phone off and added a 40GB hard drive, not only would it be cheaper, but it would hold a ton of video.
Nice looking device with great interface – as we’d all expect from Apple. But the battery life sucks big time. 5 hours call time??? That’ll translate into 2 or 3 hours in reality. Really. It’s a nice gadget, but of limited practical use. Roll on better battery technology. Also, when we all get over the sexyness of the device, and have shown it off to our friends, do we really want this functionality? Less talk time than a phone? Less storage than an iPod. Much less screen space than a laptop (for computing needs). It seems like the engineering compromises have resulted in a beautiful looking but ultimately frustratingly useless device.
This makes sense to me (from an earlier post)from Spindoctor:
“Here is what I foresee happening:
March 24, 2007 “Apple, Inc.” will release the Leopard Update; it will be exactly 6 years to the date of the initial release of Mac OS X. That will keep Apple, Inc. relevant to stock holders, thru April and May, then in June they will release the iphone that will keep the stock holders happy up to August 2007 and the next conference, where we will see the screen updates to complement the New Apple TV, and a round of updates to the Laptop and Desktops, to carry us through the rest of 2007.”
All the hype and a 6 month wait, thats rather insulting. I would have been nice to have something now, I was really looking forward to the Leopard OS. I have been anxious to get my hands on it for a year now….
Blows me away. Seems like something from science fiction.
The true iPod killer.
Ruben, I could not agree more. Just yank that phone out and keep the rest.
Randy, how isn’t it a full screen iPod? Oh and here in Ireland we can keep most phones and change carrier to whoever we want. That is what should be allowed in the US imo. It just means you can chose whichever network is right for you reguardless of worrying about which phone you have.
It does look like the best phone I have ever seen though I’ll give it that.
Well, what happened to this?
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ModBook
I suspect Apple will release a full screen video iPod with the touch screen interface in November. They know more than anyone that the current iPod is outdated. They’ve been concentrating all their efforts on this phone. Now, with that mostly behind them, they will begin work on the full-screen touch-sensitive iPod. No doubts.
As far as the expo goes, I’m a little disapointed there was no talk of Leopard… 🙁
Still, that phone is amazing. Best piece of electronics to be released in a long time… simply amazing.
In east Tennessee Verizon IS the only real option. We has USC, Cingular, and Sprint. But there service in this area sucks!
I hope if/when it becomes available on Verizon that it’s less than $500. I would pay no more than $250 for something that is heavily used, scratched, and dropped.
So when do we get Mac, OSX, iLife, iWork and display updates?????????????????
Now the full size iPod looks like crap.
my 49900 cents
Only 5 hours usage time on the smartphone side of things …? That’s a bit of a worry – and the batteries – can I swap them or are they built in?
Too many questions not answered at the moment.
Also scant details on the Apple TV – Tech specs – Intel processor … now that’s useful to know.
I would have liked a few Mac announcements but perhaps they’ll be left to someone else later in the week.
Note from Steve to Origami: Bite me.
The first “thirty” years were just the beginning. Welcome to 2007. I hope there’s more though.
I think the iPhone looks great, but what I’m wondering about is why there isn’t a camera in the front as well? It seems to me that the ability to use Skype Video and iChat A/V would have been a great addition to this very well thought out device. Lastly, what about expansion options? Perhaps the dock connector could support HD Radio and or Live TV enhancements. I wonder what type of processor is used here and whether Apple has added some of the Newton’s content intuition ( being able to tell what you may wish to do with highlighted content such as identifying telephone numbers in the body of email or text. This looks to be the smash hit that brings MacOSX to the masses in an extremely clever way. Microsoft better be ready to be dethroned. 10 Million Units by 2008 sounds like an EXTREMELY humble figure.
To those whining about Leopard:
Give us all a break. Leopard is not due out until the SPRING! So, there’s plenty of time for a proper unveiling of Leopard in 2-3 months, with a presentation focused exclusively on Leopard. What would be the point of cramming a quick summary of Leopard in between Apple TV and the iPhone? What media would have covered that? Leopard will get its own spotlight, at its own unveiling.
BTW, the iPhone IS a Mac–it runs OS X, right?
OK, so a cool, but very expensive cell phone and the Apple TV…
What about Leopard, Final Cut Pro 6, hi-def upgrades for the new Octo Mac Pro….
I guess us professionals are left standing out in the cold…
I am disappointed…. should have just called it AppleWorld Expo….
Now we just need them to make a model without the phone and 30-60gigs of storage!
Iriah Dude, it is a “full-screen” iPod. But, considering my music collection alone is 12 gig on my 3G iPod, 8 gig doesn’t do much. Add some movies, TV and video podcasts and see how long that 8 gig last.
How much can you put in a 2 hour keynote? The other goodies will have their own announcements between now and June.
And Zune Tang, I bet SJ really had a jard time containing the laughter in Cupertino when the Zune was introduced. BTW, Ballmer and Gates have left the building…through the open 10th story window.
Welcome to the…FUTURE! (Get used to it.)
This is really revolutionary! There is nothing on the market that remotely compares with it. It’ll sell in the millions.
All the other stuff that some people seem to be worrying about – the mini and monitor updates etc. – they’ll be trickling through in the next few weeks.
APPL are, at the time of writing, $91.76. That says it all.
After the December quarter results next week, they’ll be heading for $100.
 Wow, there’s always something to bitch about, isn’t there? How the fsck long did you want the keynote to be? What did you want, new Macs? That’s always the most boring part of a keynote. We’ll get new Macs. We’ll get Leopard. Relax.
Start putting away your $100/ month. You know you are going to want one.
That must be so shocking for M$. I’m just blown away. That’s a mus have.
Im watching CNBC. Did I miss it? They were talking about apple when I turned it on but now theyre on to something else. Im sure it’ll be on youtube later.
Well, how many movies or songs will the iPod hold on the phone? Also, wasnt it stated on the live macdailynews keynote that there was a seperate iPod released too?
This thing won’t kill the iPod. It has got too many things going on in it. Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone will probably be very succesful in its own niche, but it isn’t a gadget for the masses. There will be another widescreen true video iPod without the frills as well and perhaps some middle-class versions of iPhone.
Now THAT is a compelling product.
I wonder if Microsoft ‘tards like Robbie Bach get this?
does “locked” mean that even if u buy it from another source, and put your SIM card in, it won’t work ?
that’s sad, thank god i don’t live in the USA.
i don’t have much to say about the phone, or rather, i have so much to say, that i’m not even going to try !
it’s AWESOME, the UI, the quality of the screen, etc etc etc etc…
even the price is good, 200$ less than the piece of crap i have now, and, remember, the first iPod was expensive, big and not that good.
a great day, Apple Computer is dead, long live Apple.
Randy, yeah I know where you are coming from there but to me it looks like a super first effort by Apple. The possibilities for a device like this are surely going to rock imo.
Ok, I don’t want to be a fly in the ointment but 8BG for $599 thats sick… What can we put on their a hour or so of tv shows, a song or two? We will have to constantly be moving things on and off the device, just to make room.
The price is nutts for that, granted the devices looks amazing. I am not a fan of the smudge factor maybe we can dub it the ismudge (then we will be forever wiping it off on our pant legs or shirts) maybe for the $599.00 price tag “APPLE INC” can toss in an Apple logo shammy for it too, call it the iwipe.
If this thing was 20-40GB at least we would have some room to play around and enjoy the devices.
Lastly, of all the carriers to pick CINGULAR =( they have by far the worst customer service, they act like they are doing you a favor by talking with you.
Ok one more thing why is Apple not running their own IMAP push from dot mac, not we have to get a yahoo account too…
That is just my opinion.
I am interested in computers and the software that runs on them. I want ’em stronger, faster, more powerful and I want them to work.
I have no interest in a tiny screen, hand held toy that includes a phone.
Nothing here today for me and I can’t help but wonder, especially considering the company’s name change, if Steve has acknowledged the dominance of his old buddy Bill and is simply withdrawing from the computer business.
There seems to be no end to the demand for cuter and cuter toys.
@ Lachlan –
5-hours TALK time.
oh and don’t worry about the video iPod, it’s probably VERY easy to make one based on this product, remove the phone, put an HD in.
and Leopard ? he just did not have the time to talk about it, it’s not gone
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
wouhou !
my best day since i worked with, for, and sometimes against Apple, since 1977.
Spock, do u hear me ?
Sometimes the things that are most interesting are those not stated. Being that this is a MacOSX device, one would imagine that it will be able to do speach recognition, text – to – speech etc. If the phone has the ability to identify one’s location, then it maybe able to do some serious navigational assistance.
I would love to see a pocket sized bluetooth or wifi hard drive that could remain in your pocket or bag and allow the phone to connect to it as a way of expanding storage capacity. If it REALLY is a feature rich, cut down version of MacOSX, Network storage shouldn’t be an issue.
another remark, my 650$ Window mobile phone (ok it has a great GPS), has only 512 MB of memory, and absolutely nothing what the iPhone offers.
the iPhone is NOT expensive !
It would have been cool it used ichat and video conferencing.
Irish Dude, don’t get me wrong, I thing the iPhone is fantastic. But you can see from my previous post that I am limping along with a 15 gig 3g iPod. I am really chomping at the bit for a new one. I can see the writing on the wall. Full screen wireless iPod video. Did you notice how music was srolled on the iPhone. Perfect interface for the rumored touchless iPod that works by running your finger up the sides. No more wheel.
More on Network Storage: This device will probably be able to stream for internet storage such as .Mac and Gmail. That may eleviate the need for extra storage on the device. Since networking ability is included on many fronts, maybe the iTunes player on the device will allow playback of streamed content as well as content stored on the device. I think we don’t know the whole story and all that Apple has up it’s collective sleave. Orb on a TV tuner enabled PC should allow streaming of multimedia to this device. The possibilities seem endless.
Finally a widescreen ipod, but it doesn’t have enough space to hold video.
I hope that they make an identicle product with a nice big HD…..heck, it doesn’t even need the phone part.
Apple has officially morphed into an electronica company, but fear not Mac faithful, what makes all those new devices stand apart is… Mac OS X!
And Leopard is coming in March, so it´s only two months away!
Especially for those of you who were not impressed with the news today… For a really excellent play by play of Steve’s keynote, see Engadget at: http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/live-from-macworld-2007-steve-jobs-keynote/#comments
This will be the future iPod interface. Soon the Clickwheel will be buried, mark my words. Apple has to keep on moving to stay on top of the game.
Hey Marc, the ModBook unveiling happens at 5:30pm EST/2:30pm PST. Looks like a kick ass product…we shall see….
Wauw!!!!!!!!
It’s not THAT expensive, around 3500kr here in sweden, that’s what sony ericsson’s phones are here. Only SE’s phones suck in quality so they’re worth about 35kr
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
This kicks ass, wouldn’t buy one though. You should NEVER buy something first gen, from ANYONE!
Zune Tang…Three words…GAME, SET, MATCH!!
Did some of you guys not see the widescreen touchscreen iPod video with Coverflow??
This unit is whatever you wanna be. Another myth put to rest…I have heard so many times…”I just wanna carry around one device”
I thought I was dreaming big in my fantasy device, but this is truly what I asked for and more and they still dreamed it bigger in real life than I did in my fantasy life.
Also, the Wayne Gretsky quote says it all.
Zune Tang, you pimply teenager, you wouldn’t show your face on this forum again if it was the only forum on earth. Companies all over the planet are checking their undies and calling emergency board meetings. Apple will now have to have an all new legal team to fight copywrite and patent infringements. What does the Zune creator and Bill Gates have to say now??
I want one, but, unfortunately will have to wait till it becomes available as an unlocked phone or with my preferred carrier T-Mobile.
ok so yeah, the original ipod would be laughable if it were introduced today considering how far it has come, but it used the latest and greatest technologies to make it. this iphone cuts corners in too many ways. only one carrier, only 8 GB max, only 5 hours battery. where’s the consumer version, the one that was simply a phone? the weather widgets and maps are nice, but how often is someone going to zoom in on the roman colloseum just because they can. and a browser? why would anyone use the browser if they could watch videos on a 3.5 inch screen. why would apple go with the less popular smartphone style when simple phones are much more popular and would sell much better and be cheaper.
Hey, here’s an idea. It would probably make a really cool input device for a computer via Bluetooth and the Widget of your choice could be the wallpaper. Kind of like a bluetooth Trackpad, with the weather or stockticker constantly updated in the background.
The BIG story here, for those of you who missed it and for those complaining about No macs or OS talk, is that Apple is no longer a computer company. No more Apple Computer Inc. was not just a name change. Now they are a consumer company just like Sony. And they make consumer products be they Computers, music players, phones, what have you. So get used to having shows that showcase what product they have and want to revile. It’s a new age. I suspect you will see other announcments on software comming up by the end of January – Feb as they have done in the past.
Georgy Porgy…Yes we all saw the “Widescreen touchscreen iPod video with Coverflow”…the only trouble is that to get out hands on one for just $499 with only 4gigs of storage, we have to sign a 2 year contract with Cingular!
Some of us may dislike or not need cell phones and want MUCH more storage! Give me the all the iPod features and internet connectivity and leave the phone on the side of the road!!!
for some reason i got the inkling that leopard’s interface is going to look and move a lot like iphone’s does, specifically the ipod section… don’t know why, it just seems very new & different than any other interface apple has put out…
questions:
no video recording with the camera built in? only for pictures?
what about games? can I put games on this thing?
is that Google Map thingy, track the users location?(kinda like mini-GPS)
can I share stuff from my iPHone to another iPhone?
Will the price come down if I buy it @ Apple or Cingular directly?
so far thats’ it..otherwise, it is indeed a break through the mold product..congrats Apple!
G
I totally don’t know what it means, but I want it.
I must be the only one that couldn’t care less about the iPhone.
The thing is rediculous.
Not that I plan on buying this, at least not for a while, but will it function as a GPS unit for internet maps and such? It looks like it might just also have some games coming for it, but they want to give Sony and Nintendo a little more time before showing off multi touch video games as well.
I was quite impressed with the iPhone too. It’s shown very well on the Apple web site. It’s got some great technological marvels and I wish that Apple makes a bundle of money on it. I know that the rest of the mobile phone industry has just about had a coronary. They have been happily over-charging for the same old cell phone technology for years while Apple has been thinking differently. I love this.
By the time I can afford one of these, Apple will have worked out all of the bugs, upgraded the OS, made the phones cheaper and unlocked them for other phone services to join in on selling one of the best mobile phones on Earth.
Thank you Mac Daily News for the on-going report of the keynote presentation. While my friends were trying to get Quicktime to view the keynote from the Apple site, I was already reading all of the latest from the keynote presentation from you. If Apple would get their act together and make Job’s keynote available as a free iTunes Store download, that would be cool. Oh well, I guess iTube is the way to go.
Thank you Apple for making my Tuesday!!!
Guys…this is my thought:
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> Videoconferencing via Apple TV ?????
1. This is the FIRST phone….kind of pilot-project: wait and see. They have to start “simple” to gather experience and get to know this market. I am sure they will bump their head once or twice but in the end they will offer something NO-ONE has: a tight integration of phone/pda> Mac> system etc. ALL on ONE system, virus and spyware free… Wait till the macmini and the iphone/pod do some freakin synergy
2. OSX is the core of it all….iPod will run OSX as will the macs, incl servers. They will offer 10.5 along with Adobe CS 3 AND a new pro mac with 8 cores: they are not ready yet and they def. would be the “natural” follow-up: what’s the point of dualcores if the 8 cores are almost there? So they wait and let it mature and “ripe” and then the other annoucement will follow soon: it will happen before august.
3. Globalisation iTunes movie store and iPhone services
iPhone is wow…
cheers, MacB NL
Amazing looking product and great features. Too big for a everyday phone. Too small HD for an iPod. I would have hoped for smaller iPhone with fewer features and true video iPod with big HD.
I wish the iPhone had the ability to put all the whiners on “mute”. Apple introduces the most revolutionary cell phone on the planet, and all you hear is bitch, bitch, bitch.
If the Steve-note had been about macs, Leopard, and “true” video iPods, you’d all be bitching about the lack of iPhones…
Did anyone else notice the subtle presentation of the Beatles Cover Art on the iPhone?… Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band / With a Little Help from My Friends
Does this mean they have a deal worked out for Beatles content via iTunes?
Zune Tang….C’mout, C’mout wherever you aaaaaarrre.
Engadget was by far the best site for MacWorld – by far!
Detailed text and large good-quality photos – and all that as fast or faster than the other sites could deliver sparcely typed text without photos.
MDN, Macworld, Mac Observer and all the others paled in comparison.
Engadget is in a class of its own.
I’m a fan of Steve and I’ll be getting an Apple phone as soon as I’m due for a refresh (already use Cingular), but I find it amazingly tacky that Steve ridicules the Zune for having 2% market share while defining success with the Apple phone as gaining 1% market share. I guess 1% of $1B = 5 x 2% of $100M, but still, people in glass houses….
This is just the tip of the iceberg for new Apple products.
The iPhone targets one specific market (a real smartphone) and there is still a market for a high capacity full screen iPod. The technology and the form factor is there, so I expect we’ll see a full screen iPod soon.
Since you can’t turn a phone on during an airplane flight, consumers need a video iPod with music and videos without the phone so it can be operated in flight.
I’m just happy that the iPhone will meet many of my needs. I can drop my old cell phone and my Palm. I could also probably do without my iPod photo on a daily basis, but I’d still want a high capacity iPod video for travel.
just as they did with the original iPod – the eventually made the nano and the shuffle. With the iPhone, they WILL make a family of phones. They will make a smaller version that doesn’t have features like web and sell it for a different price. Believe me – there will be iPhone options down the road. Be patient. This is the “starter” model.
I’m sure the iPhone is a really great product, but I’m simply not interested in a a $500 phone, especially since it ties me to a single carrier (Cingular). I’m more interested in putting money aside to get a Macbook to supplement my iMac. I have company-provided cell phone service and that’s a good thing for me because as much as a cell has become almost a necessity, the monthly cost can run up quickly. Hopefully, the iPhone will spur innovation and ease-of-use improvement in the industry as a whole and eventually bring prices down.
The iPhone is awesome vaporware.
Ever check out the cost of an unlimited data plan from Cingular? Save up your $600 and then be prepared to pay $45/month if this is called a PDA and $60/month if Cingular classifies it a computer.
Amazing piece of technology with an utterly screwed up business model. And to the guy who has a $650 smartphone, that phone has an xSD or microSD slot I’d bet….if not you got completely hosed.
The future arrives and it seems some posters above don’t even know it!
How STUPID are people (or are they just Microsoft trolls trying a little bumbling low level undermining??).
This piece of kit IS the future. It can be scaled to any size.. it is a tablet computer. Put it in 6 inch 10 inch or 20 inch box and it can do the same things.
I truly bow to the geniuses that work at Apple. Steve Jobs has to be recognised as the most inspirational man in technology – ever.
According to Cingular’s website for my area, unlimited data is $20 a month for a smart phone when paired with a voice plan.
It connects to the internet, yea! But can I use it to also connect my Mac laptop so I can throw away my stupid PCMCIA Sprint card?
My Sprint card does work great, but it only does one thing and can’t use it to connect to a Mac Book Pro. I don’t want to pay two monthly mobile internet fees, one for the Sprint card and one for the iPhone.
I know, I know, this is only the first of many such OS X mobile products to come from Apple, patients, patients young grass hopper.
The most important thing about the iPhone is the user-interface and it’s ability to run Mac OS X (lite). It truly is ground breaking in design and blows the competition out of the water.
My reasons why are on my blog <a href =”http://tweenbetween.blogspot.com/”>here</a>.
The technology in the iPhone (Mac OS X, touch screen, on-screen keyboard, etc) lends itself well to a tablet Mac done right. Swivel the screen for laptop with full keyboard or landscape/portrait tablet with InkWell handwriting recognition. This would match my needs alongside the iPhone.
If price or too much technology is your problem, that is an easy one to fix – no one bothers about the price once you’ve paid for it, from then on you only worry about how it works. I hope they’ve addressed the screen-scratching issue!
Zune Tang? Oh, Zuuunnnnne Tang? Calling Zune Tang on my new iPhone . . .
Voice recognition instead of finger perhaps?
Perhaps we can have a wide screen video iPod without a phone or any connectivity?
At the very least, it would be nice to turn the phone signal off in a zone where a signal is not allowed, e.g. as Sideshow says, an airplane, and also…ahem…my head?…
http://www.washington.edu/alumni/columns/march05/wakeupcall01.html
But will it squirt?
Seriously, a couple of versions down the line the iPhone is going to be huge. Not to mention (as Macaday rightly says) all the related devices that could be scaled/derived from it.
I reckon iLife 07 and iWork 07 (which are rumored to be not quite ready yet) will appear towards the end of March, along with Leopard.
‘Welcome to 2007’ suggests a full 12 months of awesome releases, so I’m not in the least bit disappointed by today’s keynote.
most ppl who think its expensive arent in the market for a smartphone anyway… come on…
The iPhone nano is 9 months away..
If you haven’t spotted it, the keynote is now up on Apple’s QuickTime page.
That’s expensive, especially as 4GB isn’t a ton of space for everything you’re going to have on there. Can anyone clarify: Does that price include a plan, or not?
But advice in advance: I had been waiting until the “true video iPod” to upgrade my 4GB mini (which does not fit all of my music) . . . but now it’s like, get a 30GB iPod or save for the iPhone? (I’m a poor student here with limited funds.) The interface and featureset of the phone look *very* deliciously enticing…
i’m suddenly very worried, IF the price of the iPhone is reduced by being locked into cingular, and because such ties are outlawed where i live, will i have to pay the “full” price ? or is 499 the full price before the rebate.
if it’s not, i might have to pay over 1000 dollars for it, i won’t.

SD Card for Expansion ???

you know I like the iPhone as much as the next guy…but this device is suppose to follow their motto of creating things that change the world — makes trivial things easy for the masses…but @ $600…I highly doubt that the masses are going to flock to the phone..instead, it will be the 1% of rich america that will afford such a luxury item..and for that I am upset!!! oh well..I’ll get my phone soon enough.
We are talking lots of time to develop this technology with the appropriate look and feel. I think $600 is a small price for something with these kinds of capabilities. Compare it to Nokia’s N90 series. You will see that Apple’s pricing is extremely competitive. This is a mobile multimedia computer that also has phone capabilities.
I’m really curious as to the tech stats on the device.
Anyone watched any of the various video feeds from the CES? It really is pretty pathetic compared to this year’s Macworld
What a piece of crap. Where the hell are the buttons? How did this thing leave the lab without buttons? The IT guys where I work have smart phones and those have buttons. Lots of them. They also have something the iPhone will never have: Windows Mobile. Read it and weep you Mac dorks–the iPhone doesn’t have Windows Mobile and all the cool, easy-to-use, must-have features & apps! I guess you can call Apple’s entry the world’s first dumb phone. Losers. I can’t wait to see you kool-aid drinking morons try play your precious, non-squirtable audio files without a play button.
And you Apple lemmings thought Zune was a waste of time and resources. It isn’t, not by a longshot. I’ll put my Zune up against your useless iPhone any day. Redmond has a plan and all of our prayers will be answered when they release the ZunePhone. Now that’s gonna be awesome.
You want it done right? Have Microsoft do it. Apple’s just gonna copy them anyway. Maybe next time Apple won’t forget the buttons.
Your potential. Our passion.
What the hell is everyone bitching about Mac users being left out in the cold???? For YEARS, Mac users have been complaining that we don’t have a SmartPhone/Newton replacement, and now that it finally arrives, everyone bitches about it!
For cryin’ out loud, this is the BEST smart phone ever! There are plenty of tools to create widgets, so we will have a multitude of inexpensive add-ons to expand the capability of our iPhones. We FINALLY have a phone that seamlessly syncs our data from our Macs, without having to beg Palm to keep the ancient Palm Desktop app in place.
Don’t forget – Apple is running OS X on this iPhone. Now PC users everywhere will be introduced to the goodness that is OS X. I also expect that future iPods will run this software instead of the proprietary iPod OS that they have been running.
Expect the new widescreen iPod to be introduced soon with the same interface. But why introduce everything at one event? Show off some really cool stuff, and then a few weeks later (closer to the release date), have another press event for the new video widescreen iPod.
Plus, this is SO COOL that PC users everywhere will want one, which only enhances Apple’s bottom line and brings more PC users into the fold, creating more opportunities for switchers.
Ok, I admit it. That is one damn cool looking device. And yes, this is the real DPTK user.
Confession time, I used to be Zune Tang. No more, I repent, pass me the iMac and put in my phone order.
Koolaid… didn’t you promise you wouldn’t be posting here anymore if apple introduced an iphone today?
Yes, you are right. I shall taunt you no further. bye
This is at the Star Trek end of possibilities for the iPhone/iPod. I predicted much of this — the wide screen iPod with a virtual touch interface with an integrated phone — on this site many months ago, but I did not predict OS X. I am joyously stunned. My God, I do love this company!
The competitors must be playing Mozart’s Requiem Mass over their corporate sound systems. Ballmer must have broken every chair in Redmond.
As the character in the movie “Aliens” said, “Game over, man.”
In the unlikely event that was the real Zune Tang, all I can say is… Welcome to. The. Social. You know, the one where people talk and text and chat and email each other.
People this is causing much angst in Redmond. This isn’t just a consumer device. It’s a PLATFORM. In other words, Redmond will perceive it as an attack.
And it’s good news for the Mac and Leopard… OSX under the hood means all this technology available to compliment macs… not like the Newton which was completely separate, competing for attention and resources.
My only concern is the exclusiveness with Cingular. I can easily see them charging extra for support of certain iPhone features (if there were multiple providers, there’d be pressure to be competitive.)
And clearly, this is the direction for iPods as well. The question is, how expensive is the screen, sensors, touch screen etc.
But we know how it all goes… after a couple of years the $599 model becomes the $199 model…
And this doesn’t replace MY new shiny black 80 gig ipod I just got. I’m still falling in love with my first click wheel. =)
iPhone mini before next Christmas for $199. Apple always puts the most expensive full-featured model first.
Although this blew me away, I need new Macs, a new display, and a new MBP that is ultra portable.
After some reflection, SJ never demo’d the camera, and conspicuously did not talk about iTMS on the iPhone. I assume you can’t download from iTMS directly.
He also did not specify the WIFI type, which probably means that “n” will have to wait.
There was no mention of storing any other form of data or visualizing them (documents, etc.).
Apparently no games, not even the ones on iPod.
It’s a good first generation model, but I think SJ is probably going to increase its capabilities gradually untill one day it could actually be a miniature, full-fledged computer.
I’m waiting to get the 2009 model!
Did anyone notice that it looks just like a G5/MacPro case from the front?
Any idea if this phone will work internationally? I’m in the market for a new phone that I’ll be able to use during my trips to Europe, and I’d be able to justify paying $599 for the 8GB if this is the case.
I wish DNA could have seen this. =(
Okay, I’m gonna say this right now: I don’t care what the rumors or the manufacturers say, Apple built A LOT more than 10 million of these things.
And they’re still gonna Run. Out.

MW: ‘miles’ (down The Road Ahead)
To everyone who is complaing about how expensive the iPhone is… sheesh… That 3G 40GB iPod that I have, and that Apple sold the crap out of, was $499 at its introduction too. And look how little it does in comparison… just music, black & white screen. Yeah a new 80 GB ipod is $349, and has a lot more storage, but look at how much more the iPhone does. Sounds like a helluva deal to me.
MW: ‘planning’ as in, I’m planning to replace my 3G iPod and take a huge leap forward.
I’m stunned by all the dissapointment.
“Doesn’t have enough memory for video” – Bull SH#%. Um, this thing runs on batteries. Steve states 5 hours for Video playback. And he ran Pirates 2. So YES, it DOES have enough memory for video. If you want to complain about capacity, complain about the video playback time due to battery limitations. Not long enough juice for flights to Asia or Europe, but just fine for most domestic flights.
“It’s not a widescreen iPod” – Again, BULL SH#%. Were you not paying attention? Flip it on it’s side, and it becomes a landscape video/photo viewer. Touch the screen, and it displays video in 16:9 ratio.
“It’s too expensive” – I call BS again. Steve did a great job of breaking this down. You’re essentiall buying a smartphone, average cost $299, and an iPod Nano, $199, all rolled into one, for $499 or $599. There are other “smart” phones out there that cost MORE and do WAY LESS. It’s actually amazing they aren’t charging MORE for it considering the BILLIONS they must have spent developing this piece of art. Any idea what a patent costs? It’s EXPENSIVE. And there are 200 of ’em in the iPhone.
“It doesn’t play games” – WHO CARES RIGHT NOW?! It’t not enought that it runs OS X, plays music and video, makes phone calls, does SMS, has a real browser, receives PUSH email, and has a camera?? Don’t worry, I’m sure there will be a software update that will allow it to play games. Not to mention release is still 6 months out, it may be there at release.
“Where’s news about Leopard? Mac Mini with Core 2 Duo? Wonk Wonk Wonk” – Um, hate to tell all of you, but Apple stands to sell WAY more of these than they will any Mac. I love my Mac, but the cell phone market is MUCH bigger. Again, Steve pointed out that nearly 1 BILLION cell phones were purchased last year ALONE. The iPod, Apple’s best selling piece of equipment, has been around for 6 years, and doesn;t come close to approaching that number. They’d be FOOLS NOT to try to get in the phone business. And you KNOW that this doesn’t mean that Apple is abandoning ship on it’s computers. So they dropped “computer” from their name. It only signifies that they do MORE than sell computers. And MacWorld runs for a few days folks, there may still be news yet to come. It’s obvious why Apple TV and the iPhone were highlighted in the Keynote, they are great products that deserve to be given separate recognition.
Ok, a few points if i can remember them all.
1. I think the iPhone is running OSX 10.5.
2. If it was called anything Mac-related or iPod-related it would hurt sales. There are MANY people who would never buy a Mac but own iPods and there are a few whining people who don’t want iPods (because they’re apple) but they may buy an iPhone. Also, businesses would frown upon buying a bunch of iPods (versus buying a bunch of iPhones) for their executives.
3. iLife ’07 and iWork ’07 will have a lot of tying into Leopard, so they can’t be released before Leopard is released, and Leopard is not quite ready.
4. I forgot the rest.
Today Apple Computer Inc changed their name to Apple Inc to reflect their growing product line.
In related news Microsoft Inc announced they would change their name to Micro Inc to reflect their share price.
us aussies have to wait till 08.
thats not cool at all.
*sigh*
Huh…the new device looks interesting…Apple finally decided to look ahead a little…but not 5 years, as Steve suggests. I would have been more interested if it had more storage and battery life…that would have made it almost impressive. But alas…it’s just another gimicky toy, as have been all Apple products since the Mac emerged. …and since when did any Apple product toting person ever consider theirselves serious computer people let alone “computer professionals”…I mean…really…go to school and learn some real technology. Use something that doesn’t have to bastardize itself to work with Microsoft, just to stay alive after it’s ridiculous years proprietary overpriced shlock software. Apple and professional shouldn’t even be in the same sentence exccept when pointing out the joke of it. “Apple”…huh…how ’bout “crapple”.
Errr…. that last comment is actually quite offensive. I use a mac every day at work. So just to really piss you off here it is in one sentence “I use an Apple Mac and I’m a professional creative developer”. I don’t struggle to make things work with PCs they just do. Oh and guess what we have very close ties at work with Adobe who are now responsible for some serious programs such as Flash and Flex Builder….. and the last demo they did for us….they were ALL using macs. Go back to 1994 where you belong. FYI I went to school for 3 years to learn the software and skills I have.
@ Kevin
So what would have made it more interesting to you is a bigger HD and a bigger battery. Out of all the things iPhone has going for it, THAT would impress you? Do you think you maybe need to get out a bit more? Huh, okay.
Every time Apple updates any product, they tend to increase both those things, and that really impresses you, does it?
“It’s been done before.” – Kevin

MW: ‘did’ (you see the scrolling???)
So take a look at
” rel=”nofollow”>this. I’ll bet you ANYTHING that Apple put it in that plastic case because it would be a lot harder for your camera to auto-focus on. ^_^. Sly bastards.
ChrissyOne…
No…”bigger HD and bigger battery” as you put it, are not what I said…”more storage and a longer battery life” is what I said. …and yes it would have almost been impressive if they had pulled those off, without increasing the size of the device. As it is, the device is just a version of technology already available, technology that works with more than just one provider, I might add.
BTW: Pinning theirselves to Cingular only, was a huge mistake.
I will almost give Apple a compliment on the size…but reducing the size of a PDA phone, and leaving it with a small amount of storage and battery that has very little talk time is not impressive engineering. Any engineer can see they obviously sacrificed usability to bring the size down.
What we really need, is a phone that is small, and is not dependent on proprietary rechargeable batteries. Use AAA batteries for goodness sake…at least you can recharge them, or opt for new ones, if you are stuck in an airport or somewhere that it is inconvenient recharge the darn thing every 3 hours…which is the reality of the maximum talk time, provided you don’t use any computer functionality.
Yes…I want real engineering…I want a real breakthrough…not a crappy low storage ipod with phone “capability”.
Jeremy…
I’m sorry you seem offended. Surely you have a “Mc” instead of a “Mac”…as in career at “Mc”Donald’s. Personally, I would not consider waiting for fries to cook as a career in creative development. Just for fun…let’s go back to 1994, when Macs where completely proprietary…and you had to buy overpriced software and peripherals that used the oh so chatty Appletalk protocol…spending days in resedit, playing with the order of loading extensions, because the only developers that would write for Macs, were McDonald’s graduates looking for a quick buck from unsuspecting technical neophytes. Nope…not for me. You can have your Apple and live with the worm (jobs)at the center.
Good luck…I’m sure your 3 years of Mac training from tech school of the week (Vatterott, Sanford-Brown, or Lincoln Tech)will get you far.
…something occurred to me. There is now no reason films can`t be shot in portrait orientation. I, Christina Wiley, hereby claim the original idea of films, TV shows, and other commercial features shot, edited, and presented in portrait mode.
Call my lawyers. ;P

This, in your professional engineering opinion? I see. Well, then why didn’t some other brilliant engineer actually build one? Because said engineer would have gotten as rich as Apple is about to. Lots of profession engineers at Microsoft. Why didn’t any of them think of it?
Lots of talk, but there is only one horse running at the moment.
All the others just fell on their daces.

Dear AtAT, wherever you are…
JaaaaaAAAAaack! You’re missin’ iiiiiiiit!
I think there is a pretty good chance that all the people that used to pretend to be Zune enthusiasts are now employed pretending to be experts in engineering. I’ve looked at a couple of them and there sure aren’t many posts after November.
“BTW: Pinning theirselves to Cingular only, was a huge mistake. “
I know, because you have to please all your wonderful and glorious partners.
Why EDGE? HSDPA is being rolled out and is the technology of the future for AT&T. Let’s hope that Apple used one of the newer Qualcomm chipsets (MSM7200 or MSM7600) and the iPhone can be firmware upgraded to HSDPA in the very near future.
Also, these two chipsets include GPS capability for a much needed feature upgrade to the map function that Apple included in the iPhone.
Plus, if Apple went with the MSM7600 chipset it could easily support EV-DO through Sprint or Verizon, although an exclusive multi-year agreement with AT&T pretty much kills that option.
IMHO the GUI is the only real innovation that Apple brings to the cellphone market. You can’t deliver much content over EDGE and will need to be near a WiFi hotspot to download music or stream video. Advantage definitely goes to those phones with EV-DO or HSDPA.
Apple could redeem themselves somewhat by offering VoIP over WiFi. If nothing else, provide VoIP in the home to a Mac connected to an AT&T landline.
Let’s hope the engineering team used the MSM7600 chipset…
The name iPhone just doesn’t fit this device.
I vote for Apple Mac Mobile.

Makes perfect sense Steve. Your marketing people missed an opportunity here to define a new class of computer. Instead, Apple seems to be running away from the idea of being a computer company.
It is a MacOS X device for mobility.
Fire the marketing weenie that screwed this one up! (Jobs probably won’t fire himself.)
wow! one more time, an Apple product is touching my libido!!!
We have to wait much longer to see “The” phone in Greece… but it worth it…
I wish Apple never forget that is a computer manufacture comp.
Great job jobs
I was all ready to sell my existing 80 GB iPod and get the new iPhone. NOW I CANT! I have tons of music and videos that I love to have with me all the time. I cant lose that. I need the 80 GB iPhone!! Please Steve Jobs!
I’m disappointed. I’ve really wanted to purchase a wide-screen iPod, but I sure as hell won’t rent one. As for Apple associating themselves with Cingular, they should have done there research. Cingular has cheated me, and since then I’ve learned of three other friends that they’ve cheated in the same way. I rarely NEED to use my cellular phone so I have a low-minute plan with rollover minutes. In one month they eliminated ALL of my rollover minutes then billed me for an additional 1500 overage minutes. I argued with their representatives for hours over several days explaining how for nearly 2 years I had never used more than 200 minutes per month. I finally gave up and paid the $600+ bill fearing they’d shutdown my land-line business phone service that was managed by their parent company, Bellsouth. Since then I’ve completely weened myself from cellular service. It wasn’t hard to do. Frankly, I doubt many people really NEED a cell phone. We like the idea of having one for emergencies on the road, but frankly that isn’t worth $50 to $70 bucks a month. As soon as my contract expires on my cellular service I’m done with it.
I hope enough other people feel the same about the iPhone so Apple will release a simple upgraded widescreen iPod, perhaps add standard WiFi capabilities.
Is anyone else about tapped out on subscriptions? It sure would be nice to have a sense of ownership. To be able to enjoy movies and music purchased and archived on personal devices for years without having to pay subscriptions to access the stuff.
i wil like to order thing with credit cards in this company.
