RUMOR: Apple on track with ‘iPhone’ release, no delay

“Contrary to sentiments recently expressed by some analysts, Apple Computer’s much-rumored iPhone device is very real and will not fall victim to further delay,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider. “…last week, an analyst for CIBC speculated that the device could see delays into the second quarter of 2007. The scare shook some investors, sending shares of the iPod maker on a multi-day skid. That report, sources say, does not hold water.”

“People familiar with the matter tell AppleInsider the first of the iPod maker’s music-enabled cell phones will begin shipping on time next quarter, regardless of when the company plans to first unveil the device to the media,” Jade reports.

Jade reports, “Those same people say that, thus far, delays have stemmed from the Cupertino-based company’s self-imposed challenge of perfecting a scaled down variant of the Mac OS operating system that will run on the embedded device.”

“While AppleInsider awaits confirmation of a specific launch date, recent rumblings coupled with a lack of other significant Apple product developments suggest that industry watchers may be in store for an iPhone-tinged Macworld Expo early next month,” Jade reports. “An introduction during the conference or shortly thereafter would allow chief executive Steve Jobs to preempt the garden variety of necessary public disclosures — such as FCC filings — that would be required of the device and threaten to spoil some of its pizzazz.”

  2. That’s a great point you’ve made. Apple gets the last laugh with its answer to Zune:

    1. Haha Microsoft, not only did you not steal any of our market share, but
    2. Apple knows how to implement “the social” with the correct type of product (a phone of all things ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />) and in style.

    Phones = social
    Music players = not social

    Congratulations Apple on understanding something so simple.

    If that’s all it does, it will just be another phone. it won’t make a dent in Blackberry/Palm/Windows Mobile share unless it does all those things better than the existing devices do them (And yes, they already do everything you mentioned and have done for some time). And it would need to play just as nice with Microsoft Exchange as they do.

    Later in the 4pm appointment: Sorry MadMac the rant you emailed me about Apple inventing everything just didn’t make sense. Don’t you know other phones already do all the stuff you think will be so revolutionary coming from Apple?

  4. It will be a wireless iPod first, with Internet access and a direct link to the iTunes Store. So Apple will more than double its market by allowing customers to own and use an iPod without the need for a fairly recent Mac or PC. That’s how it will be marketed. It’s not an “iPhone.” It’s a wireless iPod, and it just happens to have a “bonus” phone feature.

    Note: Microsoft could have made a huge impact if it had made the Zune into such a product, a full-featured digital music player that does not require using a computer to put music on it (and happens to also be a phone). THAT would have been a key differentiating feature. Instead of Toshiba, Microsoft could have partnered with a mobile phone maker (such as Samsung) to create such a device. Instead, it goes with a “me too” device with a nearly useless wireless feature.

    No. Microsoft will let Apple do it first, then wait five years and play catch-up. That’s the Microsoft way…

    At best, Zune’s wireless feature may be useable to synch over a wireless connection with the PC. That would be far more useful than the current “squirting songs to another Zune for three days or three plays” feature. However, if the PC is right there, just connect to the cradle or cable. Afterall, you still have to physically connect the thing to charge it up after draining all the power needed to do the wireless connection. But I’d be willing to upgrade my “nearly useless” comment to “mostly useless.”

  7. What would make the iPhone distinctly different from all others and will these features be incorporated? For example, would the iPhone have an iSight and microphone for hands-free communication?

  8. I think we should realize something about the history of the “microsoft catch-up” scenario.

    They haven’t succeeded at it in markets where they didn’t have the windows monopoly to use as a lever. MS Word, MS Excel, and Internet Exploder were able to kill off WordPerfect, Lotus 123, and Netscape, because MS was able to either bugger the competition by dliberately breaking compatibility, or by giving the product away for free.

    Look at the X-box: It’s a massive money-loser, and there’s no sign of it going profitable before the Wii and the PS 3 eat their lunch. Look at Wince, the Zune, and the whole “plays for sure” debacle before that.

    MS got rich by capitalizing on their position after they caught IBM’s fumble. They’ve NEVER demonstrated any ability to compete and win where the monopoly didn’t offer them an advantage.

    Think the cellular service vendors are willing to get coralled the way the PC industry was? Think again!

    And for example owning the email system that almost all corporate customers uses doesn’t give them an advantage when it comes to wireless email? Microsoft includes for free with Exchange 2003 what Rim charges money for as an add-on (provided you use Windows Mobile phones). How long until Rim becomes the next Novell?

    Xbox is far from a failure, unless you count inability to immediately gain another monopoly as failure. Windows Mobile is appearing in more and more smartphones.

    The monopoly gives them an advantage EVERYWHERE, since they generate so much cash they can go after strategic markets and stick to it until they do win.

    Apple by contrast is currently a one or two trick pony. Once iPod sales taper off they’re toast unless they can figure out what the next big thing is, and be a player in that arena.
