this is not viet nam. there were no communists planning to blow up the golden gate. the only parallel i can make is the soviet nuclear threat of the cold war. while there we protests about nuclear weapons, they were about at the level of peta protests. our security was a dominant concern. the theory of mass mutual destruction was our iraq war back then. you, joe public, generally supported the strategy because it was cheaper for you than building a bomb shelter. the majority of the population has to get to an equivalent threat education level to put iraq in the proper perspective. don’t see this as any different than the cold war from a threat perspective. we just are behind it the same way.
trying to get back on topic, the fundamentalists are fighting against the influence of western culture on their lifestyle. so opening a mcdonalds is just as much an invasion as sending in the 1st cav. their use of western technology to spread propaganda and incite jihad volunteers is justified in their minds because their are using it as a weapon not a cultural pillar. our ultimate weapon is to create viable “western” economies to change the culture of rich powerful families, supporting a religion that conveniently tolerates and sanctifies their existence keeping 90% of their population deperately poor.
personally i’m not sure the sociological infrastructure exists in the middle east to support a “western” economy that creates a dominant middle class today. when bush says this will be a long war, he means it ain’t over until this happens. not saying there is not a desire to be middle class, but that the fear and stigma of the middle class being “western” is a real barrier. using technology, like the macpro to create content and run a small business, is on the path to create a middle class, but there is a long way to go.

wow, originally wanted to say something positive about these news. But I somewhat lost my appetite.
I still find the evolution of things somewhat frightening, especially when I run into U.S citizens who almost always start a conversation by excusing themselves…for being Americans.
Personally, I’ve spent lot of time in Dubai, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait since my company has lots of clients in the region. Being a western European, I always find it amazing how well educated the people in the region are. They’re mostly pretty fluent in 2-3 languages, they know lots about foreign politics and, well, they really enjoy spending time with us, the foreigners visiting them. They love discussing and explaining everything we would like to know about their culture.
I just wish some of you people, the ones who seem to believe that Arabs are born killing-machines with the priority to kill all cute americans, to encounter some of the people I’ve met. Even though the white man has peed on their culture and treated their people with enormous amounts of disrespect through ages – they will most likely smile and ask you if you want arabic coffee or maybe even a nice Shisha.

Islam had about 500 years less to evolve compared to christianity. 500 years ago, If you would have criticized God, The Pope or what not mentioned in the Old or New Testament – you would’ve ended up losing your life under very unpleasant circumstances. Dropping nuclear weapons was our LAST RESORT, because the Japanese refused to consider surrender as an option and the Dem’s favorite past time: negotiations, were NOT working. The war would have gone on and on for more years and more death on both sides. Sometimes it is justified to do the toughest thing to END a terrible situation. You can’t always fight a surgical war and win, in fact it’s nearly impossible, careful of every little thing. Ideal, but not even close to practical reality. Couldn’t do it and win in Nazi Germany and couldn’t do it in Japan. We would have lost and the government we’d be saluting sure wouldn’t be an “open-minded” democratic one like you enjoy so much.

Sumsa, you might want to go reread that section on Kamikaze pilots. Your assertion on their reasons for their actions is wrong. The Japanese dragged us into WWII, kicking and screaming. The Kamikaze pilots were a group of men who had been conditioned to fly themselves into their enemies whenever they had either run out of ammunition or suffered damage that made it impossible for them to continue their attack.
The Japanese civilian population were told by their government that American soldiers would rape and torture them if they were captured. During the island campaigns Japanese civilians, sometimes entire families would commit suicide to avoid being captured by the Americans. PBS did a pretty good special on this, they had actual footage of a man and wife throwing their children off of cliffs before jumping off themselves. Terrible acts brought about by the lies told by their government. WWII was an especially brutal war. We (man kind) did horrrific things to one another for Nationalistic reasons. This is the nature of man – we’re all tribal in one way or another.
I think we would all be happy to live and let live with our Muslim neighbors. I think many, if not most, of them feel the same way about us. Unfortunatley, again, we have been dragged into a war, kicking and screaming, by a group of very determined people who I’m not sure where prepared for our reaction. The problem is that our reaction came about 22 years too late and is too much like Israels reaction to the 1972 Munich massacre. Surgical strikes never work against a conditioned population. Perhaps if we would have delt with the Iranians in a more brutal fashion back in 1979, those would-be terrorists today would think twice about lashing out at us. The lessons they learned from that point on is that you can punch us in the nose and we will not fight back. I’m sure Jimmy Carter’s actions (or inactions) were meant to be construed as a sign of a civilized society however that didn’t translate and was seen as a sign of weakness which has plagued us ever since.
So here we are, once again, divided on what to do and how to get along with these folks. Perhaps all the bickering is a good thing. Maybe through the infighting we’ll find an answer.

I wanted to express something similar to what you wrote – desperate people (in any war) consider better killing themselves than falling into the “wrong” hands. This is what I´d call “last resort” – when you´re feeling left with only one option – death. Still I have to annotate that people don´t need to be fooled by governments or public opinions into that feeling – it´s the inborn fear of losing your habits or structure. After WWII german people killed themselves and their families just because they feared getting linked to the nazi regime without ever supporting the nazis (as far as possible).
Though I suppose that many of the japanese planes didn´t even have enough fuel to return to their bases, I think it was not that what made them commit suicide. It was plain desperation and fear like someone putting them a knife on their chest.
And thats what I´d call “last resort”, not dropping A-Bomb while being the superior force in a war.

Just because (western) people tend to not understand foreign religious and hierarchical habits, it does not give them the right to hit / ignore / mistreat them just because they don´t understand them.
For example I had a family reunion a few weeks ago in a public park within a area, where lot´s of muslims live. There were a lot of teenagers passing by, but they did not ask what we were celebrating, but who was the oldest, who was “chief” of the family, and were guessing which woman was married with which man. As we asked them to go, they did not leave – but we did because it started to rain. For us, it did not mean a thing at all, but they surely had a different view and propably felt like “winners”.
For typical western people this would not make sense at all, but it´s a pretty common situation which discloses pretty good the different structures of civilizations.
So I´d say that as long as we (or them) are not be able to really “negotiate” with them, we should train that and not bash them.
