Wal-Mart leaks Microsoft Zune price

“In what appears to be a serious mistake by retail giant Wal-Mart, the company posted a price for Microsoft’s recently announced 30-gigabyte media player, Zune, at $284.00 on its Web site… As reports began surfacing on the Web, the company quickly moved to take the item down… ‘This price was incorrectly and inadvertently listed at Walmart.com,’ said Amy Colella, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart,” ABC News reports.

ABC News reports, “If that price holds up, the player would fall in line with similar products from Apple and Creative. Apple’s 30-gigabyte iPod, for example, retails for around $300.”

Sheesh. 15 seconds and 3 clicks is all it takes to get it right: Apple’s 30GB iPod retails for US$249 (the 80GB iPod is $349). You’d think Disney’s ABC would be able to get it right, wouldn’t you?

  1. Can you imagine sitting around an industrial design crew’s meeting at Microsoft to discuss Zune colors and somebody says “Hey, we’re always accused of not being first, not innovating, not taking chances. Apple has never used brown. I say LETS DO BROWN!”

(Uh….there’s a reason for that Butthead.)

At Apple, probably 6 people would have carried this idiot out the door, threw his sorry ass in front of the headquarters sign and stuffed a Your Fired pink slip in his mouth.

At Microsoft, they cheered and began comparing turd shades for the best brown they could find.

  2. Zune may have on advantage in pricing over the iPod if this price from Wal-Mart is accurate…discounts and rebates. Most retail stores sell the iPod at list price and not much less. iPods are never part of Best Buy or similar stores “weekly ads.” My guess is that if Wal-Mart can sell the Zune for $284, they and other stores will drop the price occasionally and hype it up as “one week sale.” People seem to go for these kind of things, despite the hassle of mail in rebates, etc.

Great take! The only problem is assuming the MS actually HAS an ID Crew!

On the same note The MS engineering dept must be driving trains al day everyday. Given that engineers either build things or drive trains. We have all seen MS SW…..they must be driving trains!

  4. CompUSA — always has and always will be a FU store..I was there last night, wishing I had a camera so that I can share a image with everyone…CompUSA in San Mateo, California have a outdated ad — highlight the NEW iMac G5 with FRONT ROW!! (yes, iMac G5, not INTEL)..also, they has Manager Special’s on Intel iMac 20″ for $1,699!! WTF? is that all about!? Man, I really felt like cursing out the Apple rep — note to Apple…CompUSA Apple REPS are doing a SHIT JOB…FIRE THEM ALREADY!

  5. Funny, it’s as thought Apple just revved the iPod to ensure that Zune has no advantage at all. The Zune costs more, looks worse, won’t play any online-purchased music, has a shorter battery life, has no click wheel… Holy crap, what is Microsoft THINKING?
