  1. It’s going to be Aperture 2.0, and it’s going to be amazing. Integrated inito Apple’s other apps just like iPhoto! We’re going to kick major hiney! Lightroom is going to look like Photoshop Elements compared to Photoshop in comparison. On a Mac Pro, it’s going to fly!

    1: Multi-user

    2: Round trip to Photoshop

3: Multiple versions of a photo sent to Photoshop at the same time, each wtih a different curve to emphasize shadow, mid-tone, and highlight so you can improve the photo using alpha channels and masks.

    Look out Adobe!

    S.

  2. Too funny, R! Maybe it’s the Mac Tablet!!!

I also think it’s Aperture 2.0. I’ve talked to a few photographers who have played around with 1.1 and like it but are waiting for 2.0 to come out before buying. The $300 price drop tempted them A LOT at the time, though.

  3. Gambit, you better point out that Germany is a part of Europe – plus a map of Europe. Remember the US education system. But yes, Cologne is cool. Ugly as hell tho. Those phosphor bombs sure altered the look of that town.

  4. Why are people saying that this is a photoshop killer?????? This isn’t a photoshop program and its not intended to be. Its a program to streamline the workflow of the photographer. Keep the photos organized and keep them in order of the time they were shot. It’s used as a way to give specifics of each photo in great detail. What the aperture is, what the shutter speed is? and so on more so than photoshop gives you. It will never replace photoshop and is not intended to be a replacement app.

  5. Hah ha, an Apple Camera!

They sold one of the first digital cameras and got out of the market nearly 10 years ago.

Actually, the Photokina show would be a good opportunity for Apple to release next generation monitors… with fast refresh rates, built-in iSight, the works. Maybe even some unheard of extra, too. It’s high time the monitors got a boost, they’ve even been rumored to be working with one of the big display manufacturers on some new technologies. OLED? All WACOM-style touch screens? Who knows?

  6. Aperture is an amazing program, I use it every day, but it also needs work before it can take a significant market share. If the programers can fix the problems and then sprinkle a little Apple magic, (come up with features and workflow solutions I haven’t thought of but can’t live without) Apple can have a hit on its hands.

High expectations. One can always hope.

  7. Aperture 2.0 probably.

But I still believe the natural evolution of the product demands Aperture Server which does picture desk, digital asset management, web storefront/syndication management and workflow. In my head, it will also be developer extensible via plug-ins.

  8. They already had a press event to announce Aperture 1- they’re going to do it again to trumpet an upgrade? I don’t think so.

How about this? Suppose Apple’s been working on a real Photoshop equivalent? Everyone knows Aperture is only intended to supplement Photoshop- it’s all about streamlining workflow for photographers who take massive amounts of photos and need to produce them as quickly and efficiently as possible- it is a different animal than Photoshop.

Maybe Apple decided they couldn’t afford to wait until June ’07 (or later) for Adobe to get their act together- how many millions of $$ are they missing RIGHT NOW because no one’s going to buy a Mac Pro to run Photoshop under Rosetta? It’s now been proven that they are slower than the G5s in this crucial instance.

So, maybe they’ve learned from Aperture that they can DO this, and maybe they’ve been working on a Photoshop “substitute” – let’s not be crass and/or unrealistic and call it a “killa”- if they have built something that has even 75% of the functionality of Photoshop, perhaps with a prettier interface, that is kick-ass fast on those Mac Pros, and is aggressively priced so it’s an easy decision- so people will think, Hm, I can buy this now , buy my Mac Pro NOW (the real incentive for Apple to do this) , and still buy Photoshop in a few months if I need to– that’s what we call killing two birds with one stone.

It might be just enough to kick the sale of all of those Pro Macs and ‘Books into overdrive. There is HUGE pent up demand by now.

So, this is my theory- “Enough like Photoshop for now” program, AND Aperture 2.0 to go with it.

If it happens to turn out to be the Photoshop Killa, well, so much the better for Apple- Adobe brought it on themselves by dragging their feet.
