Apple Mac to take spotlight at WWDC, probability ‘low’ for new iPods

“His faithful followers will be listening carefully on Monday when Steve Jobs strides on stage to address the masses of Apple Computer Inc.’s fans at the company’s annual worldwide developers conference,” Rex Crum reports for MarketWatch. “Apple’s co-founder and chief executive doesn’t speak in public often — he doesn’t even take part in quarterly conference calls with analysts — so when he does take the stage, his words often carry more weight than might be expected in a forum ostensibly dedicated to people who design Macintosh-based programs.”

“Analyst Gene Munster, a veteran Jobs-watcher with Piper Jaffray, says it’s almost certain Jobs will tout a so-called Mac Pro machine to replace the PowerMac, and some sort of new server hardware. He said that Intel’s release of the Core 2 Duo chips line makes the developers WWDC conference an ideal stage for introducing a new product,” Crum reports. “Indeed, Jobs is likely to give a “Mac-centric” keynote address, said Shaw Wu, an analyst with American Technology Research. ‘We view this as important as many of (Apple’s) professional and high-end consumers have been waiting for a high-end expandable Intel Mac,’ Wu said.”

“Additionally, Apple has already said it would demonstrate Leopard, the next upgrade to its Mac operating system,” Crum reports. “Wu said that even though Apple devotees may crave seeing something new on the iPod front, the probability is ‘low’ that the company will launch a new iPod at this conference. Past practice suggests any new iPods are more likely to come out sometime in either September or October, he says. ‘There is always room for firsts,’ Wu said. ‘But WWDC is a Mac event and has not been used in the past for major iPod announcements.'”

  1. Apple does make other products besides the iPod. Personally, I’m sick of all the iPod news. With a new iPod released every week it’s old. Give me more Mac!!!!

“Indeed, Jobs is likely to give a “Mac-centric” keynote address

How disappointing. I was all set for Steve Jobs to give the “General Electric-centric” keynote address.
