Liberal blogger on switch from Windows to Mac: I’m sold

“A few months ago I told you how, after two decades in the PC universe, I was considering buying a Mac. The immediate trigger was a really bad experience with a new Gateway computer. But there was a broader dissatisfaction with PCs and interest in trying out Macs. Also, in the field I work in — journalism and web design — Macs are fairly dominant. So I got a Mac Mini to test the water and a nice Mac Cinema display, figuring that if I liked Macs the display would migrate with me when I got a more powerful Mac system,” Josh Marshall writes for Talking Points Memo.

“So I wanted to take a moment and report back on what my experiences have been,” Marshall writes. “Basically, I’m sold. I’ve been using a PC at home and a Mac at work for several months now. And I just prefer using the Mac. A lot. Some of it is simple ease of use, the ‘it just works factor’. It runs with few or no problems. And not having to worry about computer viruses is nice. I’m also doing a lot more working with video… When I think about it, it’s hard for me to point to any one thing that I prefer about the Mac. I’m a pretty adept PC user. And I’m usually able to fix or workaround whatever problems crop up. I think what it comes down to for me is basically three things.”

Marshall’s list:
Quality: Quality of the physical product and its integration with the operating system itself, which also seems light years ahead of Windows. The thing’s just made really well and it shows
Integration: It’s hard to point to any one thing that makes too big a difference. But they build on each other. And all told, they lead to a more pleasant and productive work experience. The new Macs have a suite of programs (iLife) for organizing and editing your photos, videos, music, etc. Amazingly powerful and well-designed. Just right there, ready to use, perfect. If you’re working with graphics and video and anything to do with design, it’s just not even close.
Aesthetics and It Just Works: I like the way the Mac looks and the physical presentation on the screen is vastly nicer than on a PC. Also, things just work a whole lot easier. I plug things in and they work.

  1. Shady, I would wait. Most likely, next week, there will be updates and the iMac may be included. By then, you can either get a current iMac for cheaper, or a newer iMac for the same price as the previous models (but better!).

In either case, an iMac is a great choice and if you know any students, you may be able to get a student discount. wink wink.

Let us know what happens. Good luck!

  2. Shady,

Absolutely WAIT. It’ll only be a few weeks before the new 20″ iMacs will be shipping, most likely, and you’ll have a significantly faster machine than my 20″ Intel iMac. And mine is fast as hell.

Hope you love your new Mac as much as I do.

  3. I have had a new MB Pro for about 20 minutes now. The only thing that bothers me is that I can’t get my stuff transfered off my Windows machine fast enough to stop using it. I’ve been waiting to be able to make the switch, and the day is finally here. Just another liberal sharing his experience.

  5. Shady — I bought the 20″ iMac back in March — I was going on the road with our iBook and needed to leave a computer for my spouse to use — and I haven’t regretted it.

Chances are the new processors announced will be going in the MacPro desktops; I can’t really see Apple changing the lineup on the consumer iMacs this soon (they’ve only been out 7 months!).

But I’d wait a bit if I could, if only to make sure you don’t have to pay an extra $129 to upgrade to Leopard; see if Steve announces a timetable for Leopard introduction on Monday at WWDC. If it’s less than a couple of months, hold off and you’ll either be able to get a machine with Leopard preinstalled, or it’ll have Tiger but the Leopard disks will be included in the packaging (that’s what happened to me with my iBook). If it looks more like they’ll wait till MacWorld SF (early January), go ahead and get it now — that way you can at least get used to the interface in the meantime.

    Good luck and enjoy your new toy… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

I think it depends on where you put the boot.

You must an amazing person, knowing exactly what everyone else believes, thinks, and does.

At least you are in your own world.

  8. Shady
I waited for years to get “the best mac I could afford” and stopped waiting when the Intel iMac came out. Happy am I. If I were looking now, I would grab a used eMac with at least a 1gig G4 (I got a 1.25gig w/DVD and 1gig ram off Ebay for$350.00 for my grandson) and get the 20″ iMac after Leopard comes out and new processors around 3/07 at latest. The eMac will be new enough to upgrade-or sell-and is great for kids. That would be my strategary. Naw, screw it, I couldn’t wait either. Good luck.

  9. Awesome guys… thanks a lot for your suggestions. I will definitely wait until after the WWDC for more information. I agree that it would be nice if I could wait for Leopard and save the $129. We shall see.

I am so sold already though, so I am getting one no matter what. It looks like I am another Windows convert. And believe me, those numbers are growing every day. It is nice to realize I have a choice…

    Thanks again!

  10. Hey Guys,

MDN is pushing your buttons. They know that it will get a lot more people commenting on this piece than a header saying “Another blogger switches to Mac”.

It’s one of the oldest tricks in journalism to have a sensational header to get people to read the story. It’s a grab! MDN quite often uses the tactics of newspaper tabloids where you assault your readers with a screaming header and then sit back and watch the punters bite.

The best thing to do is ignore the one word “liberal”, and then make a comment on the story content NOT the header. Better still don’t comment at all. That’ll get them to change quick smart. If they don’t then their advertisers will dump them.

MDN word “poor” as in poor journalism.

  11. Shady –

I have a 20″ imac 1.8 G5, so It’s already ‘dated’ as I can’t run (as if I really need to) any intel programs.
But in Sept it will be Two years (already!) and it has run flawlessly. My wife and two teenage daughter share it with all their Itunes, Videos, Ichatting and stuff And my wife and I do what 90% of people use a home computer for – Surf the Web, E-mail, Pay our Bills and manage our budget. With fast switching, and a 20″ inch screen, doesnt require any desktop or underdesk real-estate It is the perfect computer that has function flawlessly. The Local DSL guy I use must have some great spam blocking software, or he is just to small and under the radar for the Spam masters, and with junk mail I NEVER get spam…

Apple has made a computer to good, that it will probably be another 4-5 years before I have to buy another. And It will most assuredly be an Apple. I’ve owned five Apple computers since 1985 And have only had two hardware issues: My Apple IIc had a bad motherboard (replaced under warranty in one day) and my 1999 Imac 350 had the CD drive go bad. It was replace for less than $100 with one that allows me to play DVD (not an option on the $999 model when I purchased it).

So the short of it is – You won’t regret buying a Mac. Any Mac.
