MacDailyNews Note: We are now back on the ground after five days at “MacDailyNews West” and once again safely ensconced in the palatial MacDailyNews headquarters. Daily updates should now flow more freely and regularly again – providing that everyone’s A/C running constantly doesn’t cause an East Coast blackout. Thank you for your patience.
First post, and I am sooooo secure
Greetings from Finland
Good Morning Finland
From Los Angeles.
Anyone tried this yet? Any issues?
I’d update if my whining MBP wasn’t at Apple. Welcome back to the heat.
Apple_fan:
Yeah, I have one BIG issue! After downloading and installing this update, my email and web connection no longer functions.
Although….. that could be due to Time Warner/Roadrunner doing “maintenance” over the whole of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens and causing all internet connections to fail. Could be the heat, and TWR deciding to shut down their servers to conserve energy… could be, right?

I mean, come on, it’s only 32C / 89F at 08:30am. Good job I have dotmac and my agency doesn’t use TWR….
I’m waiting a couple days before I install. Can I install OSX updates on my PC at work? If microshaft can’t do it maybe apple can do a better job. Autocad just keeps crashing. (Word to Autodesk – please port to the Mac Platform Please)
of course, those of us who got screwed with 10.4.7 and had to roll back to 10.4.6 (or remove USB 2.0 cards) are getting further screwed by this one…
FYI, yes I tried just rolling the IOUSBFamily.kext back to 10.4.6’s version… did NOT work. I guess I could go back to USB 1.1
Let’s see, security or usability… gosh I feel like I’m using Windows…
Gil
These guys http://www.northstaraccess.net/ will host Autocad for the cost of one license + $50/year. You can run it through your mac browser and if you have a good DSL or cable connection the performance will surprise you. No need for Bootcamp or Parallels.
I saw a demo at an Apple store with the rep running MS Visio and it was impressive.
Go morning everyone
Charlie:
It’s gonna be a scorcher here in NYC today. Me and my MBP and an ice coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts are not wanting to walk the ten blocks to work.
I was unable to connect to my wireless router after the update even though it was showing a good connection. Set up my connection again and everythings hunky dory now.
There are still some Safari exploits and the MetaData file exploit hasn’t been fixed. (turn off Safari “open safe files” and watch what you download)
The Javascript pop-under exploit hasn’t been fixed either.
updated two machines so far (g4 laptop, g5 tower)… quick & painless w/ no oddities to report
1. repair permissions
2. run update
3. repair permissions
Tommy,
I haven’t installed the security update, but I have had no problems with 10.4.7. As a matter of fact, it seems to be the best OS X update yet for me. My system is very fast, responsive, and stable. Maybe you could give us more info on what your exact problem is.
I have no idea what the “IOUSBFamily.kext” is except that it is obviously a kernel extension.
You don’t have to repair permissions. Apple has never said to do that. It’s not one of the steps and not required. Daring Fireball had a great article explaining what “Repair Permissions” is actually for and when to do it. But you certainly don’t need to do it with an update.
Installed update on 3 machines:
1.
Trusted Pismo G3, works flawlessly but slow.
2.
iBook G4. No problems either.
3.
PowerMac G4MDD. My main workhorse.
Hangs on startup, FireWire Disk Mode doesnt work.
Shit. This is gonna take some time.
Now where did I leave my Tiger DVD?
Heads up folks… this is a biggie!
On the goood news side of things
Is it me or has this new Security Update 2006-004 speed up my Power Mac G4 733 MHz (Quicksilver)
It sure has done something…
On the nor so good news side of things-
I’ve lossed the use of my clock! Guess i going to have to look in to it!
Rick
I’ve heard that there are some real problems with this security update. I’m not sure I’m going to download this quite yet.
No double killer delete select all for me.
No probs here……..yet. Seems fine so far. Small too – 5.5 MB(PPC). Sorry to those having probs.

—> Got a link about that, I’m interested in it. Thanks
I’ll just wait for 10.4.8 (still on 10.4.6), should be pretty soon, from all the problems 10.4.7 updaters are reporting. Apple has to know this, from the far fewer number of people I suspect are reluctant to put their computers at risk by downloading the .7 “upgrade.”
I agree with Ted. I don’t know where this “repair permissions” stuff started, and if you’ve changed some away from their defaults, you’re going to have to change them back after “repairing.” Should be called “resetting to defaults” anyway.
cubert,
10.4.7 leaves certain users with 3rd party USB 2.0 cards unable to wake from sleep. There was a suggestion on Apple’s page to roll the kernel extension back to version 2.2.8 (used in 10.4.6) which worked for some people, but not everybody(myself included). That just made all USB devices freeze. (real fun when you don’t have a mouse or keyboard to get that damn G4 CD tray open…)
I guess I’ll have to forget about sleeping… I really like that feature too…
i’m still running 10.3.9 on my g4 ibook and it screwed up my wifi connection, which is incidentally handled by an airport express.
after the update i could not find my internet connection or printer through wireless.
still haven’t figured it out, and probably didn’t need the update to begin with.
booo!
