Analyst Wu: New iPod nano with ‘magnesium-based casing’ may debut in late September

American Technology Research senior analyst Shaw Wu today reiterated his opinion that Apple’s as-yet-unannounced 2nd-generation iPod nano is running late for its as-yet-unannounced debut date.

Wu wrote:
We continue to believe that the new iPod nano (aka mini vPod) refreshes are facing transition issues due to an architecture move to an SoC vs. its present 3-chip solution. In terms of timing, we continue to believe calendar Q4 is most likely, specifically October and at the earliest, late Q3, meaning the second half of September.

An interesting data point we have picked up on the new Nanos is a new magnesium-based casing,. We believe this new casing will improve scratch-resistance, durability, and help lower Apple’s support and warranty costs.

In addition, we anticipate a preview on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, its next-generation operating system that will one up Microsoft Vista… We are prepared to see something that no one anticipated.

American Technology Research maintains a “Buy” rating on shares of Apple with a 12-month price target of $75.

  1. “Cubert: I’ve seen you jump a pyramid of cubes like nobody’s business. You can get a job anywhere!

Cubert (actually Q*Bert) owes a lot of people A LOT of quarters. In today’s legal enviroment it may be possible to sue an 80’s stand-up arcade game vendor. I’m going for a class-action lawsuit.

  2. I should own at least four full Galaga arcade systems. I’m sure there are plenty of “quarters” horror stories out there. No Cubert, no vacation. Just freelancing like a mother squirrel. Whatever that means. Marathon forever knows what Pfthor.

  3. “Here’s one for ya – remember the sit-down versions they used to have in Pizza Huts?”

Yes, yes I do. Those were sweet! But I always stood. Too much action to sit down. Plus, I’m a competitive SOB and never wanted to get beat, especially sitting down.

Sorry, Ampar. It’s getting late and I’m all out of witty puns.

  4. “Whatever happened to Tempest?

—> You know, I never really “got” Tempest. I used to just spin back-and-forth and fire that button as fast as I could. And those damn little vector “bombs” that used to shoot up and stick there so you couldn’t move past them or you’d blow it. Strange game.

Here’s a guy who *LOVES* Tempest. He holds the world record apparently (check out his collection of classic arcade games – I’ve played them all. Not his in particular):

—> And, check out these scores from old copies of Electronic Games Magazine (Look for Tempest and Eric Clayberg. Same guy as above. You will surely recognize the other games as well. How about Gorf? Vector graphics and that lovely speech synthesis):

Jimbo von Winskinheimer: Check out the links to the scores above, some dude got over 487,150 on Crazy Climber. And another got over 24,000,000 on Q*Bert. Damn! I get sentimental about the old arcade games. Nothing like playin’ them on the actual machine.

I know, I know – shut up right? Well, looking at his pictures I couldn’t help but notice GAUNTLET. That was one of The coolest games EVER! – “Your Wizard is about to die!” (game speaking)…..
