  1. There’s no reason for these other than this: Because RAM must be matched on the MacBooks, until now, Apple Store customers wishing to buy a MacBook with 1GB RAM would actually have to, essentially, eat $100 to achieve that, as the built-in two 256’s would have to be discarded, and replaced with the two 512’s ($200). Either that or order it online.

Now, Apple Store customers can get MacBooks with 1GB RAM without being screwed out of 100 bucks.

  2. Sounds like mostly what this does is let Apple Stores put in two 512 MB sticks without forcing the buyer to pay for two 256 MB sticks that might as well be tossed in the trash.

Would have liked if this had been available back when I bought my MacBook..would have saved me the trouble of ordering memory and then having the unused sticks.

Of course, that is all academc since my MacBook is already at the Apple Store having its hard drive and logic board replaced…

Going back over my Apple purchases, I’m realizing that our of the Macs I’ve bought new I’ve only had two–a G5 tower and G4 mac mini–that hasn’t required a substantial repair. iBook G3 with three logic boards, two optical drives, and free replacement by AppleCare with a G4 iBook. iMacG5 with replaced logic board. MacBook with new hard drive and logic board. And then there’s the intel Mac mini I haven’t taken back yet that only has about 30% Airport reception from the airport express plugged in three feet away…

I guess Apple gets high customer statisfaction because they repair/replace machines, but my god is that a lot of duds.
