Apple has expanded its available MacBook models from three to five.
Currently only available in Apple Retail Stores, Apple is offering a new 2.0GHz white MacBook with 1GB of memory and an 80GB hard drive, doubling the memory of the initially offered model and adding 20GB of storage space, according to AppleInsider. The new white MacBook is priced at $1,449, a $150 increase.
Apple is also offering what the company calls “MacBook Ultimate” which is a 2.0GHz 80GB HD black MacBook featuring 1GB of memory for $1,599.
Both of the new MacBooks offer SuperDrives.

It’s nothing special. Just the top two MacBooks with BTO options pre-installed for you. No extra prices compared to going to Apple Store Online.

It’s an acknowledgement that 512Mb RAM just isn’t enough.
My MacBook lasted two days before I convinced myself it needed more RAM. I’ve never looked back since.
they were finding apple buyers could not figure out how to add any options so they just made them part of the standard line up.

MDN: Another misleading headline. They are just retail configurations, not new models. You can buy exactly the same machines online using BTO.
get a grip guys, it’s just custom CTO models. What it means is that the Apple Retail Stores are seeing high demand for models with 1GB of RAM and so they are now stocking them as opposed to making customers wait for the CTO machines.
Magic Word: Race, as in don’t race to apple.com/store as there is nothing to see there. move along folks, nothing to see.
These aren’t new models. These are the same MacBooks with beefed-up specs. A new model would be something with a different design and/or new hardware inside. These just have more of what MacBooks already had.
Anyways, MacBooks should always be sold with min 1 Gb RAM. Glad I bought mine with that.

To all the critics of these ‘new’ models, I say get a life.
You now have the option of buying third party memory to complete your MacBook, or just buy the pre-configured MacBook with the expanded memeory.
This move acknowledges the level of BTOs Apple is receiving and fills the channel with the computers peop0le are buying. Its a move that is good for customers and investors alike.
I’m pleased as hell that Apple has the good sense to offer what the customer wants (and is buying). Q4 is going to be dynamite.
More choice is always better. I think this points to a better supply line.

Gregg if, as you say, Apple is offering what the customer is buying….well, isn´t that all they can offer?
Could be that Apple figured it couldn’t hurt to a few mass marketing techniques for the benefit of switchers, whose basic intelligence is undoubtedly lower (on average) than that of long-time Mac users, and who are therefore more easily impressed by package deals that often offer no real savings. More power to Apple if this plan succeeds! Apple is a non-discriminatory company. All IQ’s welcome.

Since this is a “Apple Store only” version, it suggets that lots of MacBooks are being sold at the Apple Store. The demand must be quite high to legitimize selling these higher configured machines directly vs, BTO.
Sounds good for Apple.
I think that an “ultimate” edition of the MacBook should have something more than just normal CTO options. Something like adding the backlit keyboard and maybe the ability to manually set the amount of RAM dedicated to the graphics card.
512 RAM = standard video memory
1GB RAM or above can be set higher (either 128 or 256)

It’s just a way for Apple to make more profit and correct a problem with slow under RAM capacity machines.
Should have been done long ago.
If you want a RAM less box, then order it online.

From what I’m told, Apple has always had 1GB options in-store for PowerBooks, and these were always casually called “ultimate” but not publicly, just for internal reference.
More RAM and a bigger hard disk means a new “Model”, now that’s Innovation.

This brings to light a question I’ve often wondered about MDN;
What is the legal and/or ethical journalistic basis for revising stories’ headlines to suit the editorial bias at MDN?
In my opinion it sometimes works against the intentions of this site, since the editors frequently yake others to task for trivial inaccuracies, yet have no problem changing the wording of a quoted article when it reinforces their own perspective.
Does calling new configurations ‘models’ serve any real purpose other than to stir up discussion about semantics?
