  1. I hope by faster you mean “somewhere near acceptable”.

Because with my large (20,000+) iTunes library, Front Row was unusable. I love the look of it, but I wouldn’t even show it off to make friends jealous, because I would get the little “spinning thingy” for ages every time I moved from menu to menu.

I’ll have to give it a try after downloading this update.

  2. I wonder if it’s going to disable the Front Row I unabled with FrontRow unabler. Front Row works great on my Dual G4. I’ll wait to hear from others about that.
BTW, I control Front Row with my bluetooth phone and it works great.

  3. blucaso, maybe you should think about segmenting your iTunes library. I read about a utility a few months back (I think it was in MacWorld mag) that allowed you to have multiple iTune libraries and switch between them easily.

I know it’s not as good as having everything in one library, but you might find that you could break your library in half or thirds and get good results. This way you could at least enjoy using FR while listening to your music.

Sorry I don’t remember the name of the utility, but if you can’t find it online from MW, Versiontracker might help.

“I just downloaded MediaCentral for my powerbook. For anybody that doesn’t have front row its a nice replacement and its free.”

-I use it as well it works great. The best part is that you don’t have to use the new ILife. So if you are still using IPhoto 5 then this is the way to go. Oh yeah if you have also ripped your DVDs for backup from mactheripper they also play on this as well.

  5. hey guys, ive got front row on my power mac g5 (originally using enabler), all you have to do is unzip the dmg, open the disk image, drag the pkg to ya desktop, ctrl-click and open package contents, open folder, open the frontrowupdate.dist in textEdit, scroll down a little bit untill you reach……if ( !isModel(“PowerMac12,1”) && !isModel and put in your mac code (cause it says powermac doesnt mean it is one!) its under system profiler, mine works fine. this will probably disappear shortly after posting ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  6. I just got a 17″ MBP. After playing with Front Row, I decided that its pretty neat, but Apple is going about it all wrong. The whole idea of using iTunes to store videos is just stupid. Why should I have to import my videso from my Movies folder into iTunes in order for Front Row to play videos from a remote computer. Maybe whats needed is an application for movies and videos similar to iTunes. iTunes is becoming this giant monstrosity.

  7. jeff you dont have to have your movies in itunes, if they are in a different place or hard drive just alt/apple key and click drag to make an alias icon, then put that into itunes videos. – it creates a link to the real video file)

  8. Just upgraded to the new version on my iMac G5 2.1 – have just over 12,000 in iTunes (do they go “unused”? Don’t know, don’t care). Went from about 20 secs. lag to less than 3. Not “instantaneous” but very nice improvement.

  9. Another, easier option for Jeff (and anyone who wants to leave their movies in their Movies folder) – unclick “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library” under the Advanced section of Preferences. They still show up in iTunes, and in FrontRow.
