RUMOR: Apple to announce Intel-based iBooks in March

“Apple’s first Intel-based iBooks, originally anticipated by Think Secret last November to arrive at Macworld Expo San Francisco, now appear slated to be announced in March, sources report,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret. “Apple’s current 12.1-inch and 14.1-inch iBooks are to be moved to End of Life status before the close of Apple’s second quarter at the end of March. More recently, sources have suggested that both of those iBook models will be replaced with widescreen 13.3-inch displays.”

“The timing indicates that Apple could very likely pack Intel’s Core Solo processor into the system. Intel has previously said the single-core sibling to the MacBook Pro’s Core Duo is on track to be delivered to vendors towards the end of March. This means that while an announcement may arrive in March, the new iBooks likely won’t be available in quantity until some time in April,” Katz reports. “Sources continue to report that the iBooks will arrive clad in a new enclosure; one more significant than a mere incremental update to the current iBook’s design, which Apple first delivered in 2001.”

  1. I’m going to sue Apple. I dropped my PowerBook on my foot and they didn’t issue a disclaimer warning me, “WE KNOW YOU WILL HURT YOURSELF WITH THIS COMPUTER SOMEHOW AS YOU’RE A BLITHERING IDIOT.”

Then I’m going to sue my parents.
They didn’t disclose that I would eventually die at the time of my birth. I’m defective. I think I have a case.

  2. “…and if they don’t show up in March, we’ll simply revise our predictions forward again and again until Apple finally releases the product. Then all of our idiotic readers will be so impressed by how dead-on our predictions were.”

  3. We just bought my mother a 14″ iBook at my university bookstore for $1049 this past monday, but they’d been on sale at that price for a bit before that. Brand-new. That’s about $200 below the ed. discount.
It looks like my university jumped the gun a bit on the “End-of-life status” of the current iBook.

  4. I suspect, btw, that Apple will rename the iBook as “iMac Book.” This is in keeping with claims that Apple wants “Mac” in the name of all of its computers, and I also suspect that the styling of the new “iMac Book” will take design cues from the iMac computer. This would result in the following line of Apple computers:

    Mac Pro (prosumer desktop)
    Mac Book Pro (prosumer notebook)

    iMac (consumer desktop)
    iMac Book (consumer notebook)

Mac mini –> to be renamed AppleVision to disassociate it from being a computer and associate it with being a device you hook to your TV.

  5. I have the advertising line for the new iMac Book, to:

iMac Book. It’s the iMac you can take with you.

  6. Thelonius, no doubt about it. I’ll testify that you’re defective ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

I wish I was paid for my guesses about stock prices, pending products and such. What a racket!

  7. The names suck. iMac Book!!?? Mac Pro? iMac Book Pro. iBook Mac Pro Mac Book Mac Pro Mac-mac Book? I don’t give a shit what the chip is called. PowerBook and iBook were better. If you want to change the name you have to come up with something better first. Change for change’s sake is lame. Guy, guys … think different. What the fock are you going to call your tablet, iMac Book Not Book Not Mac Not Pro Tablet?
