2006 shaping up to be banner year for digital media business, thanks to Apple Computer

“Events at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this month indicate 2006 is shaping up to be a banner year for the digital media business. The promise of broadband as a conduit to deliver premium video and audio services to the home has been developing for more than five years. However, the market has been constrained by cautiousness among content providers, and by a lack of truly compelling service offerings for consumers,” Mark Kirstein writes for iSuppli Corp. via Electronic News. “We can all thank Apple Computer Inc. for breaking the log-jam.”

“Apple’s wildly successful iPod player, coupled with music on its iTunes Internet music store, established a breakthrough value proposition for customers. The company’s iPod video launch in October was the pivotal event that began drawing video content owners into the mix. Since October, the television and movie industries have raced to make their content available in digital format across a variety of channels and platforms,” Kirstein writes. “However, aside from the iPod video, which shipped about 7 million units in Q4, we’re still looking for the right platform/service combination to put broadband video content on the TV and really ignite the market. The content is there. The platforms are nearly there. Apple, where are you when we need you?”

    Someone needs to add also that Apple are breaking the log-jams that are viruses; computer stability; ease of use; bad beige design; etc etc etc.
